How is Fells' contract not an issue? I presume that if Fells would have been willing to move his contract to an acceptable level, he'd still be on the team.

I guess he is finding out what he's worth on the open market and could replace Mulligan next week if all are agreed. For this week, we need a blocking TE for a tryout.

I would have to agree with those who feel this is an odd choice. I would have thought that they would have brought back Fells if they wanted another TE, now that his contract wouldn't be an issue after passing through waivers.

For a TE Mulligan is strictly a blocker. In the past the Pats didn't hesitate to throw an OT out there in that position. (see Nate Solder.....the early years). So in the end, this is certainly a curious signing, but not very impactful either way, IMHO. But I doubt he survives to week 3

I 3rd that notion, I would of rather left the roster spot open, reminds me of the Lex Hilliard signing last season, hopefully Mulligan departs as quickly as he did.

I believe they would of kept Fells and paid him if he was healthy, but since he wasn’t and it limited the likelihood that another team would show interest they likely cut him, and maybe if they see a need when he is healthy they will resign him.
