Maroney's benching

What's the general consensus on whether Maroney will be back next year? I hope we can retain him for the right price. Can't imagine him having too much value on the FA market but I also thought the same of Randall Gay before NO gave him a fairly nice deal. If it takes more than Fred Taylor-type money to resign him I hope we draft a replacement.

IMO no chance he is back. Maroney misses a block, BB takes him out for the remander of the PLAYOFF game. That says a lot to me

Well Faulk was really the only back that got work after that till he got hurt. We abandoned the power running all around not just abandoning Maroney.

I guess fumbling on the one yard line is excusable and BB was wrong to take him out? The 2nd and 3rd time he did it wasnt an issue and BB should have turned the other cheek?

He obviously had an issue with fumbling this season. That can be corrected. You know who used to also have an issue with fumbling? Kevin Faulk. I remember when many fans wanted him gone, too. Thankfully more intelligent and patient minds prevailed.

He doesnt hit the hole

Wrong.

misses blocking assignments

Almost every RB will miss a blocking assignment now and then. I doubt many RBs in the NFL could have blocked Lewis on that play.

This sounds like an issue you should take up with Sammie Morris. After all, if only he had managed to block Bernard Pollard ...

doesnt take constructive criticism, thinks he knows everything.

This sounds like something you couldn't possibly know and thus just pulled directly from your posterior.

He's exactly what we don't need.

On the contrary, he's precisely what we DO need.

Some of you will aplogize for him all day long, but I wont.

That's right, keep fighting the good fight. Irrational criticism is a noble and valorous undertaking, and the rest of us are better for having read your wise and incisive commentary.

Morris got in the game as well as Taylor. It was no coincidence that Maroney didn't see any more time.

I'd like to see the amount of plays that both Taylor and Morris were in for. IIRC, Taylor saw the field about as much as Maroney.

Sammie Morris: 1 carry
Laurence Maroney: 1 carry
Fred Taylor: 1 carry

Morris has missed blocks, Taylor has fumbled the ball on the 1, Faulk used to fumble a lot and then he got his self suspended for a game that proved critical...

Maroney will be back at least through camp because he's cheap and young and they don't have a lot of leeway on alternatives. They have bigger fish to fry than the RB position. If they can get those taken care of they will probably add to that position, too. Maroney has at least always been an effort guy, and Bill will continue to give those guys chances. It's the guys who weren't practicing as hard as he wanted on Thursday that will be first on the chopping block. No way Maroney was one of them or he wouldn't have started the game yesterday.

He is signed through 2010 for relative peanuts on his rookie deal.

Maroney will probably join his buddy Chad Jackson next season...on the "we need to find another, have to let you go" list

I noted this in another thread, but it's applicable here, too. If the team is going to treat Maroney the way it did this year, and have a 3 week hissy fit over a fumble, it should cut him loose so that he can go to a team that's a better fit for him.

3 fumbles at the goalline, not to mention the other ones he's had. He doesnt do enough good things for us to forget about it. They wouldn't be having a "hissy fit" over a fumble.

I agree. I don't think there are many RBs who could have made that block.
I don't know if the issue is Koppen's pre-snap reads/adjustments, or what. But something seemed to be off with the interior pass protection, as it broke down again (as it has intermittently all year long).

Calling B.S. all-over-the-place on this one. Kevin Faulk or Sammy Morris would have made that block and that's all you really need to know--that's why they were in the game and Maroney wasn't.

Maroney was a split second too slow in reading that blitz. Lewis came in like gangbusters but most NFL RBs would have gotten over more quickly and at least given Brady a chance to avoid a clean sack or throw it away.

RB is an urgent need on this team. It's plain as day and if BB doesn't see it and pick one up in the draft, then he has truly lost it. No balance in the offense=epic fail. 2007 was an aberration. :spygate:

I don't think you can judge the running game from yesterday's performance. They were down 14-0 after three offensive plays, 24 to zip after the 1st quarter. The only freakin' option was for TB to pass, pass, and pass again. BB usually played the two best pass-catching RBs--Faulk and Morris. They're also the best pass blockers. If they hadn't been down by so much, so early, Bill would have played Taylor and Maroney more.
