Maroney's banged-up shoulder... [merged]

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

I don't think so. He shared carries with Marion Barber for most of his college career.

The only year he didn't split carries was his final one at Minnesota.

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

The troubling aspect of this injury is that depending on severity it may change the way Maroney hits the hole. There was a noticable "Marion Butz" quality about his second half carries. For him to be successfull he needs to be an aggressive punishing back. If the injury manifests residual pain he may continue to display the happy feet and render the offense to 5 wide only.

An insurance aquisition at running back...be it by draft or trade would be prudent.

Patriot history sets a bad precedent regarding disclosure of severity....
Anyone hear about Watson's ACL during his rookie season?

I have no faith in Kevin Faulk or Sammy picking up the slack... this situation requires an examination of the offense.

I think people are overreacting.

Watching his second half play last year provided dramatic empiracle data to judge his performance. His wheels are still sound..that's good....His shoulder?????

Time will tell

Your avatar is bizarre. But in a good way.

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

like i said earlier..i questioned that brace i saw on his elbow during titans game i believe

seen here:

^right arm

he didnt have it against Jaguars so i assume he got hurt there im guessing

the right arm has that brace and only that arm so its his right shoulder i would believe

i pointed it out..now im bringing it back up. lets stop the "omg we need to draft Lynch"..lynch has back problems himself and Maroney will be fine

Good observation but we'll know more once we find out which shoulder it is.

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

When BB spoke with Reiss after the season ended, he mentioned that he "loves some of his players and respects them all." IMO BB "loves" Maroney. When BB feels that a player is special, he is. Maroney will explode next year.

Well, one things for sure, his shoulder may explode upon another impact with Bob "the Hitman" Sanders

I get that feeling too.

Maroney's value to the Patriots next year will be based on his production...not BB's enthusiasm for his talent.

Good health will be key

Re: Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

You can produce documentation to support this assertion?
Are you serious? RBs have the shortest average NFL career of any position. About 2.7 years, I have read. No other position is so prone to career-ending injuries.

I have never understood that statistic. I think the numbers are so low because of the players who have to retirely shortly after they enter the league because they simply aren't good enough, not so much because of injuries. The average career length for a running back who actually is good enough to regularly have a job is more like 7 or 8 years, which is still probably the shortest of any position.

It wasn't a dead even split, but he shared carries with Russell:

RUSHING GP Att Gain Loss Net Avg TD Long Avg/G

Maroney, L. 11 281 1524 60 1464 5.2 10 93 133.1
Russell, Gary 12 186 1135 5 1130 6.1 18 61 94.2

We don't NEED to draft Lynch per se. We do need to draft a RB that can come in and step in as Maroney's back up. There are backs that will be available in the mid-rounds. Brandon Jackson, Darius Walker, or either RB coming out of Louisville should be there in the third.

Maroney's banged-up shoulder...

turns out he had a serious shoulder injury that needed surgery. who knew? i hope for 2 things: 1. full and speedy recovery, 2. this was the reason for his drop-off in performance as the year went on. if not, then i have little confidence he can carry the load as a true #1 back, especially since workhouse dillon is gone.
--------------------
PHOENIX - Patriots running back Laurence Maroney had offseason shoulder surgery that revealed "fairly significant damage," according to a league source, though the long-term impact is unclear.
Maroney felt shoulder pain down the stretch and in the playoffs that limited his ability to absorb contact. He underwent exploratory surgery that revealed more damage than anticipated, and corrective surgery was performed.
The exact nature of his injury is unclear, though it was enough to land Maroney in a sling. Team spokesman Stacey James could not confirm last night if Maroney is taking part in the team's offseason conditioning program.
The surgery is just the latest physical setback for the running back, who also suffered torn rib cartilage and a minor knee sprain during the season. With veteran Corey Dillon cut at the start of free agency, Maroney will enter the season as the lead back.
He didn't appear completely healthy in the playoffs. After averaging 4.3 yards per carry during the season, Maroney gained just 87 yards on 31 carries in the postseason (2.8). He carried 13 times for 18 yards in playoff games vs. San Diego and Indianapolis, fumbling in the red zone against the Chargers after coughing the ball up just once in 175 carries during the season.
A hard-nosed runner out of Minnesota, the 5-foot-11, 220-pounder appealed to the Patriots because of the way he combined speed with toughness. In college, Maroney was well schooled in the Walter Payton drill, a gauntlet created by the Gophers coaching staff that taught runners to lower their shoulder and gain extra yards rather than step out of bounds.
Maroney exhibited such fearlessness during the season, but his health was occasionally an issue.
He hurt his knee in the next-to-last exhibition game and sat out the exhibition finale. He was ready to go for the season, however, and recorded his only 100-yard game in Week 4 against the Bengals.
Maroney remained healthy until Week 13 against the Lions, when he was injured in the first quarter of a 28-21 victory. He tore rib cartilage while absorbing a jarring hit from safety Terrence Holt.
He missed the next two games, but returned to rush 20 times for 121 yards in the final two games of the regular season, scoring two touchdowns. He rushed 175 times for 745 yards in the regular season.

Re: Reason Maroney's Performance Declined?

I'd duck if I were you.

Re: Reason Maroney's Performance Declined?

I guess the question of his toughness has been answered.

Re: Reason Maroney's Performance Declined?

We just never know the whole story. If Brian Billick or some big mouth were our coach we'd know every detail, but since this is BB running the show we won't really know.

I think Maroney will be fine. He obviously loves the game. He's apparently very tough if we can trust this article. He lost a couple fumbles, but for an allegedly injured rookie that isn't bad at all. He was good on kick returns. He really doesn't have a weakness I can think of. He doesn't have Corey Dillon's stiff arm, but he has other tools.

I still say we draft an RB as these guys have a short shelf life and really don't want to see Sammy Morris as our starting RB at any point.

Re: Reason Maroney's Performance Declined?

There are plenty of reasons why Maroney's performance may have declined at the end of the season, but none of them make me worry about his performance in 07. He's going to be nasty.
