Marcus Cannon

Cannon's been playing amazing, Scar is a genius.... but "using your long arms to keep the defender from getting a hold of you?" Is that something a lot of NFL OTs don't do? Obviously, I'm far from an expert, but I would think that's beyond fundamental football for this level. I could see footwork, leverage, angles, timing etc. as some things that might be lost on a veteran NFL OL, but arm extension?? I think I learned that on my 7th grade JV team.

2 thoughts:
1. There's probably more to it than that
Or
2. Googs had less than no idea what he was doing.

Maybe both

I said earlier this year that cannon was JAG, but his play this season has been anything but that.

Between losing the weight and using much better technique, he has become a real offensive lineman,

Dante is an amazing asset to this team.

Has Cannon's body weight been checked recently?

His play and the possible return of Volmer must be why we didn't even consider trading for an OT at the deadline.

That's a remarkable bit of insider information.

This is why Scar is Scar and Googs is Googs.

I was going to say "and Googs is unemployed", but a quick google on Googs (a Googsle?) shows he's now an Assistant to the OL coach in San Diego! Perhaps this was the Peter Principle at work?

Maybe. Whats interesting is that the current o-line coach, Jeff Davidson is a Scar disciple as he used to coach here in the early 2000s

It's Friday of bye week. I've had this feeling for a little bit of time - the Pats usually tend to reach an extension agreement with one impending FA each bye week. It's never one of the big name guys, always someone else at a cheaper contract - the middle class guys Belichick really values and we tend to underrate in favor of the stars. Last year it was Dion Lewis (granted, we view him as a star, but the contract was certainly a middle class contract).

It isn't going to be Hightower, or Bennett, or Sheard, or Butler. My prediction this year is it'll be Cannon. Something simple like a 2 year extension. We'll see if something comes out by Tuesday.... Scar loves him, Cannon apparently is happy here, and he's willing to take all the coaching required to get better - fits the Pats mold.

(also for the record, if I'm wrong and it's not Cannon, my next guess is Blount. Probably only one year for him.)

Extend Vollmer for an extra year(2017) ... Cannon for another 4 years (gtd money the first 2 years) and draft a T to prepare for Vollmer's departure

I seriously doubt we will see Vollmer in a Patriots uniform again. As much as I like him as a player he is just not dependable enough with his injury history and also not getting any younger. If I were him I'd try to cash in one last time or just directly retire and not go through any more punishment.

Amazing that a coach can turn a player form one of the worst at his position to an above average starter. Part of why football is great.

Return to Health had more to do with it.

No to make excuses for the guy but as I understood it Cannon did have a painful toe/foot injury that forced him miss some time and severely limited his practice time and mobility.

being healthy, getting is body in the shape they wanted him in and ith Scar working on his technique clearly has made a huge impact on his play.

Blount and Cannon have been reborn this season for sure.

Plus, I think the primary reason Cannon got so much flak was that all of us had the AFC Championship Game burned in our memory, where Cannon admittedly had a horrible game. However, I think he was injured (as you point out), not well coached, not able to have any stability that year with his fellow OL, in a Stadium where you can't hear yourself think because of the frothing fans (I think he was having problems hearing the snap count), and in the worst possible match-up for him, a speedy Von Miller at the top of his game and probably being tipped off at the snap.

It should also be noted that even without the advantages of the home crowd, OT injuries, etc., what the Denver defense (particularly Von Miller) did to the Carolina OT's (who had played pretty well that year) in the Super Bowl. The ROT, Remmer, didn't look much better than Cannon against Von Miller. Carolina Panthers betrayed by offense in Super Bowl

Never doubted ya Marcus

For all of Cannon's prowess, Solder's play has left a lot to be desired.

Yep.

I hammered him in 2014 and 2015 but understood why he was not playing well. In 2013 he absolutely played well after Vollmer was IR'd with a broken leg so with Scar now here I was optomistic he could turn it around.

On that note, I really have no idea WTF Googs did here that can be tied back to him. In 2104 the line didnt get better until vets like Wendy and Connolly sandwiched between Stork. He f-ed up Cannon by putting him at freaking guard in 2014 and the rookies regressed as the 2015 season wore on. Didn't coach up Stork on making sure he didn't tip off the snap count....Christ.

I never had any doubts just waited for him to be healthy.

I'd happily take Vollmer and his injury risks if his salary was significantly reduced

Right now he's being paid as an elite RT, but he's not that guy anymore. I'd take him as a depth guy for $3 million or so a year

Of course, but to me the question is whether it's worth it for a player like Vollmer to risk further injuries to his body at that age unless there is a big incentive to do so. I think the only way he doesn't retire is if he gets a somewhat cushy contract and that won't be here. And to be honest I can't blame him.

Who's gonna pay him?
He is going to be a rotational player. We need 3T at least, i think next year we are gonna carry 4. Solder is a FA in 2018. So Solder, Cannon, Rookie + Vollmer makes sense.
