Patriots Player Departure Marcus Cannon traded to Texans

Cannon was a STEAL in his draft. He was projected to be a 1st round pick until the Cancer Diagnosis. Pats got him in the 5th round. And he reached top 5 status at RT at one point.

Think he was saying Cajuste wasn’t a steal.

cajuste has not played any meaningful football in over 2 years. How much has his development been stunted because of this.

Very few players who keep getting hurt after being drafted, hang around long in New England. Cajuste is on his way to Frodholt and Derek River's fate. Even Wynn, Michel, Harry I wouldn't extend any of them based on their on field production, might trade them even

why isn’t Green Bay blowing up our phone trying to trade for Harry?

he would be perfect in their system!

We get a few pick swaps out of it:

With the draft pick swap, the Patriots will move their draft picks up several spots. Their 120th overall pick will now move up to 109th overall. The 158th pick they had will move up to 147th overall. The 196th overall pick the team had will now move up a couple of spots to 187th overall.

So it feels like a slight lateral move. I think the real headline is we save about 9.6m in salary by trading Cannon to the Texans.

Depending on what the actual cap# is for Brown, we've basically swapped Cannon for Brown plus the equivalent of a 5th round pick in draft value. Assuming Brown is as motivated to play this year as he was in 2018, that should be a win.

Correct.

Cannon was a top-75/mid-3rd-round prospect before the cancer diagnosis; Bill taking him almost two full rounds later was the definition of Steal...

Yawndy Cachoo, on the other hand, wasn't regarded nearly that highly once the underclassmen declared and the Senior Bowl/Combine/Pro Day process began...So considering his injury status, top-150 was his true value, right where Bill over-drafted Lord Byron the Coward...

I wouldn't be surprised if after all those years in NE Caserio also believes in the "outside the top 10 the draft is a unpredictable lottery so the best way to navigate it is to have many tickets" hypothesis.

It's a Walsh, Lombardi, Belichick core tenet.
We always like to think that everyone after the 3rd round is pretty much the same. A crap shoot that yields some really great players. Hard to think if' we'd had even gotten 7 wins without our 2 sixth round OLmen, one of which is going to be a starter this season.

I like this move, 65M in cap room + moving up in the draft are both good things. Doubt Cannon would have made the Pats this year...

Good trade value wise but I am a little bit concerned with our depth at tackle.

both Wynn and Brown had trouble with availability last year.

Cannon should still have something left to give. When he right he's one of the top 10 RTs in the NFL Hopefully he plays that way for them. If I was the Texans I'm not sure I make this move though. I probably wait to see if him or someone else cut. I don't think he would have costed much more than what he's being paid right now. You risk losing him but you get to keep your picks where they are. It isn't like there aren't other decent RTs on the market. I think BB won this trade. The Texans really need Cannon to return to form for a year or two to make it worth it, and we just don't know if he will.

Cannon went to TCU so most likely he's from Texas.

From Houston's point of view, they have limited CAP and with a dearth of OL talent, do you really risk letting him hit the market when you can have him at a $7M Cap hit.

it's a good T draft....I expect we'll see one mid to later rounds

I'm not. Herron stepped in nicely last year at both LT and RT. I fully expect the Pats to add ANOTHER young OT since both Wynn and Brown stand to be UFA next year.

Herron was straight garbage.

Herron is not a starting tackle. The OLine was a total sieve when he played.

Herron was not straight garbage.. You don't know WTF you're talking about, per usual. ELEUMONOR at LT was straight garbage. Herron playing both LT and RT was solid, though not spectacular. Which is why I say he "stepped in nicely" considering the fact he was a rookie.

Curious if @patsinthesnow can post Herron's PFF grades for each game.

Eleumenor really was awful at times last year. Way too often he was running around clueless in the rungame or blew up longer developing pass plays with erratic pass-pro.

Herron was a late round rookie forced to play after injuries to Wynn and Cannon's opt out. I thought he played fine (not good, but as expected for a late round rookie), but even if you thought he was awful, you have to think he has potential to get better in year 2. Two positions where players seem to make steady progress forward with BB teams is OL and Outside Linebacker (Vrabel, Ninkovich, Van Noy). Herron may not ever be starter material, but I trust he'll be better in year 2 than year 1.
