Cannon played LG to start the 2014 season. He was terrible. He's never played the interior while Scar's been the coach. So I'm guessing they probably won't go that route.
Regarding Vollmer, you mention "willing to take a discount" of $2.5 - $3M. I'm wondering what the market would be for a 33 year old RT who missed the entire year with 2 injuries, one which is considered career threatening? I don't think that's "discount" money, I think that's exactly his market value at this point (plus incentives). He's the prototype for a "prove it" contract with someone, unlikely to be the Patriots.
My "big if" resides in Vollmer not only coming back but coming back to a level where 2.5M$ proves to be a bargain. The same reasoning goes for a draft steal good enough in camp to earn a starting job. If and only if this happens, would a combo "Cannon RG/Good enough RT (Vollmer or rookie)" be an upgrade over Mason/Cannon and address two potential weaknesses at the same time, or would it on the contrary result in weakening both spots on the right side of the OL ?
