Marcus Cannon extension

Cannon played LG to start the 2014 season. He was terrible. He's never played the interior while Scar's been the coach. So I'm guessing they probably won't go that route.

Regarding Vollmer, you mention "willing to take a discount" of $2.5 - $3M. I'm wondering what the market would be for a 33 year old RT who missed the entire year with 2 injuries, one which is considered career threatening? I don't think that's "discount" money, I think that's exactly his market value at this point (plus incentives). He's the prototype for a "prove it" contract with someone, unlikely to be the Patriots.

My "big if" resides in Vollmer not only coming back but coming back to a level where 2.5M$ proves to be a bargain. The same reasoning goes for a draft steal good enough in camp to earn a starting job. If and only if this happens, would a combo "Cannon RG/Good enough RT (Vollmer or rookie)" be an upgrade over Mason/Cannon and address two potential weaknesses at the same time, or would it on the contrary result in weakening both spots on the right side of the OL ?

What if (a big if) Vollmer comes back healthy, willing to take a discount (say 2.5-3M$) and finally returns close to his old self, or if we get a steal RT in this draft that proves to be a day-one starter ?

My point is : could we envision shifting Cannon to RG ? Could he be that versatile "open side" lineman that would give us the flexibility of lining up the five best and most proven guys available ?

I asked this many weeks ago and will do it again.. why would Vollmer come back for a discounted contract given all he has been through thr last few years?

He won a ring, made a nice amount of money that will surely last a lifetime. So why should he risk further injuries being as close to the end as he already is for a relatively small paycheck?

Dont forget he grew up in Germany and is less susceptible to this "squeeze out every cent" lifestyle that many other older players seem to have.

He will retire..

I don't think growing up in Germany has anything to do with it. I have a number of business associates who are German and they love money and are hard-line negotiators.

With that said....

He'll be 33 at the start of 2017 TC. Seabass has made $22m in cash earnings in the NFL. As long as he invested well and not been foolish, he is set for life.

With that said, he is entitled to earn what his market value is.

The draft and FA market for RTs is slim.

We know he won't get big money from NE but if a RT- needy team came along and offered him say $4m for 2017 and he is healthy and still has the love and fire for the game, I would imagine his decision to walk away might be difficult

My point is less about Germans in general and more about German sports athletes. They seem to be more clever in the way they use their money as you rarely see them living particularly outgoing lifestyles.

He made a ****ton more money than an average top flight Bundesliga soccer player and I have no doubt that he will be set for life.

I think it comes down to cold calculation in the end that one more year at a discount is not worth the additional wear and tear and general injury risk for a player in his specific position.

Add in that he is not a FA but as others have pointed out his contract gets rolled over due to him being on PUP and I don't see him playing next year. The only way I could see him not retiring would be a relatively big offer that makes it worth for him to go through all of this. But that seems a bit unlikely given that it would require a trade.

Patriots Comeback Player of the Year.

Can Scar coach the whole 5 years too?
What a difference coaching makes! I was his biggest critic and I often feared for Brady's well-being when he was in the game. Now it's actually Solder who makes me fear for TB12.

show of hands from people who guessed cannon would get extended and collins/jones would both be on different teams by the start of the second half this year?
I knew Jones was gone last season. I didn't think Collins would be, nor did I see this happening for Cannon. Patsfans.com, be glad I'm not coaching this team, huh? LOL

I think it only goes to show everyone around here should have a bit more faith into the coaching staff.

They are far from perfect and fail often enough but most of the things they try has a sound logic behind it. And being able to understand reasoning for calls that I personally don't agree with is enough so I give them the benefit of doubt.

It beats watching your coach wasting your first challenge on a 2 yard completion on a first down early in the game.

His wife is from Houston and he attended U of H. If the Texans came calling you never know.

He is not a FA next season, because he spent his entire final year of a contract on PUP:

Interesting. Had no idea the contract carried fwd if the player was on PUP the whole year

Me neither.. only noticed it recently when @Miguel mentioned it on Twitter.

I am just not sure if the Pats and a potential suitor would play ball enough to make him signing somewhere else for a "reasonably big" contract (extension) a viable situation.

Based on how Cannon has played this year, if we waited until the offseason he may have cost a fortune if he contains the AFC West pass rushers.

I hope he continues his stellar play vs. Miller, Houston, Mack, etc. He will be one of our most important players in the playoffs.
Mack, OMG.

Obviously it depends on his health. If hes 100% healthy $2.25m for Vollmer is a steal here as a backup swing tackle or a starter somewhere else.

Well, I doubt that he'd play a season for that contract so there has to be an agreed extension or he will just retire after the trade. I suppose the Pats could get a conditional day 3 pick (based on him playing a certain number of games) in return given how favorable the contract looks on paper.

It just requires a lot more cooperation than him being an outright FA.

Yep. Since I can't imagine anyone giving him more than $2m upfront he may just hang it up.

All depends on his health and how much he wants to keep playing.

If BB swings a deal with HOU ala Vrabel to KC then maybe it might be worth playing for a little less. Who knows.

That's nice. Cheap quality backup.

Von Miller was in the backfield as the ball was snapped (Stork tipping). he was also off-sides several times with no flags.

I can't blame that on Cannon, who had no chance with Stork tipping the snap.

Yea I agree but I mean I remember watching some of those replays and Cannon barely moved at all.. He couldn't even get in his way.
