but this is a non-issue.......the pats perfectly well realize that if they want him here now, then they have to get him to sign something whether it is an extension or the tender

after all....he is a free agent, albeit a restricted one......

I think it could in a season where leadership is being focused on by the guy who signs the checks...

His attitude will likely change as draft day approaches and absent an offer sheet he becomes the exclusive property of the NEP and as more of the RFA's sign their tenders prior to the deadline at which teams can lower them to 110% of 2009 salary. But if it doesn't, he could become trade bait.

That's cool.

He can get another team to sign a contract up to teh week before the draft. Then the Pats can match it if it is a god cobntract or get a first and a third round draft pick.

Win-win

And if no one signs him to a contract, then he plays for $3 mil in 2010. He has to be in training camp because of a poison pill in the RFA rules. If he doesn't sign his tender by mid-June, it will be reduced to $1.5 mil for 2010.

I wonder what he thinks of the NFLPA's no-negotiation stance now?

maybe if I start putting out there the notion that he will sign 8 weeks into the season like with wilfork, that he will sign an extension the next day, like with wilfork

Mankins, a Pro Bowler in two of the last three seasons, is in California and plans on staying there until there is "significant" movement on his contract situation. Mankins was tendered at the first- and third-round level, so the Patriots can almost certainly force him to play on a one-year, $3.268 million deal in 2010."

I agree. I don't know why Mo intrepeted this as the Pats should draft a OG.

Gost is in a similar potion however he signed a medical waiver/policy that guaranteed him X if he was to get injured during team-sponsored off-season workouts.

Form Mankins, my guess is that the payout from the policy didn't add up to the potential guaranteed $$. As has been discussed, could also be a simple case of him not feeling obligated to attend w/o a deal regardless of the insurance situation....

I'm not particularly concerned about Mankins, for the reasons already mentioned above. However, the Pats' do need to address the OL over the next couple of seasons. They could use an upgrade at C where Koppen sometimes gets overwhelmed by bigger opponents; Neal is nearing the end of his career and the line suffers dramatically when he is out or is playing hurt; and you have to consider how long Light, who will turn 32 this summer, will continue to be effective.

I would think that you would want to draft at minimum one and preferably two of those three's future replacement this year if at all possible. I know most of the talk has been about improving the pass rush and adding a receiver or two, but I think the Pats should consider using one of those 2nd round picks on an offensive lineman.

Don't forget guys, we have Ohrnberger and Bussey on the roster. Granted they are relatively unproven, but Bill might be considering them the future starters on the line or at the very least viable backups. I still agree with the premise that we should draft at least one O-lineman though (Preferably tackle).

I think in light of Kraft's statement this AM it's pretty clear that they want players to be all in and leaders who will work with them and not deliver ultimatums or draw lines in the sand as Mankins seems to be attempting to do. A new deal for him may not take priority over a new deal for the franchise. And they aren't looking to reward guys with top tier deals unless they are also prepared to step up and be leaders. Mankins has been a good soldier until now. How far he goes with this will bear watching. It could get ugly if he digs his heels in at this juncture. A week before the draft he becomes the exclusive property of the NEP whether he signs his tag or not, and in mid June if he still hasn't they can effectively cut his comp in half based on 110% of his 2009 salary. If they see a situation like that unfolding, who knows what they will decide to do.

This isn't good. He is arguably the best O-lineman we have, and he's relatively young too. I really would like a happy Logan Mankins playing ball in 2010.

Is someone else posting as you? Sounding alarms already? really?? However, given the way Vince handled things, I kind of agree with you about being disappointed in Mankins' stance. He should take his cue from Vince and honor is rookie deal. Every situation is different in some way and one difference is that Wilfork knew he was pretty much irreplaceable (Brace?) and the Pats would eventually come to terms with him. Mankins is different. He was solid last year but seemed less effective than in the past. Maybe there's already someone on the team or in the draft who can easily replace him in 2011, allowing the Pats to say "sayonara, thanks for your service."
