MacMullan: It was all about the ego

Re: MacMullan: It was all about the ego.

I mentioned this column on another thread, but yeah, it's worth it's own space. Brilliant.
Had Moss been able to corral his ego and try to buy into the team concept, he could have retired a Patriot. He could have capped off a tumultuous and often unseemly career with a possible Super Bowl ring, and an association with Brady that would forever link them as one of the best one-two punches of their era.

She was probably writing this in her head while F*lger and B*rges were going at it last night.

Re: MacMullan: It was all about the ego.

I think the article really hits the nail on the head. This had nothing to do with the pick or his on the field production. It was with a growing disconnect between the team and player. I will even go so far as to say that the article maybe puts too much blame on Moss, because I don't think he even got to the point of being a major distraction yet. He was possibly a minor one but nothing that couldn't be handled.

I think ultimately Bills decision to trade Moss now came from his respect for the player. From all accounts, their final conversation about the trade was on good terms. I think that is the way Bill wanted to keep it. He could have let it play out and if it became contentious just give him the same treatment he gave Terry Glenn. But I don't think he ever wanted it to get to that point. I know that doesn't coincide with the cold hearted, win at all costs coach that he is portrayed as but that is what it seems like to me.

Re: MacMullan: It was all about the ego.

I have mentioned this before but I am of the opinion that Moss has just made the worst mistake of his career.

He was just traded to a team with a QB who loves the deep ball.... I don't see it having a negative effect on Randy. Moss will definitely do better without us (due to our current dink and dunk offense) than we (watch the ravens game for the first example) will without him.

Even Jackie, as a Moss hater, admitted how important he was to our offense:

Now that Moss is someone else's headache, you will hear that he had lost a step, that he hated going across the middle, that he was a lousy blocker. You might even hear the Patriots are better off without him.

That may be true in the locker room, but not on the field. The team's most explosive offensive weapon is gone. His departure severely cripples the offense, even if Brandon Tate and Taylor Price are ready for prime time. His immense presence was undeniable.

he's going to end up injured Teenuh ... more throws will simply break him down . he has broken down the last 2 years here ... some people are forgetting this. he has been breaking down since his record setting season.

Aren't you the one who predicted BJGE would have an awful game in Miami?

Jackie MacMullan discusses Randy Moss' downfall with the New England Patriots - ESPN Boston

Last time I will add to this subject, but this article is something that I completely agree with.

I have mentioned this before but I am of the opinion that Moss has just made the worst mistake of his career.

Its absolutely pathetic. That article comes across as written by somebody who loves the Patriots and hates Randy Moss, a koolaid chugger.

People talk about egos. I've personally been a coach in another sport and everybody has some sort of ego problem whether its too big or too small. Ego doesn't lead to a player not talking to somebody, thats a totally different problem and its something thats manageable if you know how to man manage.

I had a guy, the best player on my team who would sulk or get pissed if he didn't see much action in a game. You just gotta talk to the guy and let him know how important he is and you agree with him for the most part and when he finishes talking you talk and point out one important thing to him, then you go and remind him of some good games and bring out the positive side in him. Its not that hard to do, it just takes a little time. You just gotta understand that everybody doesn't have the same mental age. Some guys never grow up completely but that doesn't mean they can't do a job for you.

Bullcrap. Brett Favre (circa 2010) is not a better QB than Tom Brady, whether we're talking about the deep ball, intermediate passes, or dink and dunk.

And who exactly is on tap to throw Moss the ball after his 13 games with Favre are over? Sorry, but I'd rather have Tom Brady than Tavaris Jackson as my QB.

Was your play calling going to possibly jeopardize the player making millions on his next contract?

I don't know, I pretty sure BB would have tried the old sit down and talk to the guy bit.

Well said. Everything may be true about Moss but the Pats have got to manage the situation. They could have resigned him or made him a promise in order to put his mind/ego at ease so he could finish the season and maybe his career here. I think you may want to make an exception for him because he is THE BEST WR IN THE LEAGUE!!. You have to manage each employee a little differently.

Bah, irrelevant article by a wannabe football scribe.

I can count on my one hand the number of elite NFL WR's who don't have ego issues. It's part of the makeup of the position.

Not really. I'd say 60 percent plus of the top NFL wideouts are as nondescript as players at any other position.

Just because they don't do or say things publicly, it doesn't mean they don't have a big ego. I'm guessing the number of NFL players that don't have an ego is pretty small.

I counted 9.

But of the guys that played in the big money free agent era, I counted 8 out of 13.

I had Owens, Moss, Carter, Fryar and Irvin. And in the case of Fryar I think it was only when he was younger. Who else did you include.

Well everyone has an Ego just like everyone has an ID, the question is if their ego is causing issues.

Aren't we a bit full of ourselves? We expect everybody to play for nothing so they can get the chance to be a teammate of Tom Brady!

Please, there are 31 other teams that think they are worth playing for too.

To think anyone has a problem because they could catch more balls and/or make more money in a long term deal than with a team that hasn't made an offer, is just silly.

Could be New England fans are the ones with the ego problem. If I recall, Mr. Favre was the one throwing the INTs in the SB, while we were sitting home.

What year is this again? Is it 1997 again?

I don't think anyone is saying that there are no other teams worth playing for. I think she is saying that the Moss Brady tandem was a pretty special one and it is a shame that it couldn't last longer.
