I wanted absolutely no part of Fields. He just felt off to me. I don't even see him as un upgrade over Trubisky. I'm pretty pleased with Mac.

Trey Lance is the guy I was most interested in. I thought we had a legitimate shot at Lance considering he didn't play much and was division 2, but the 49ers killed that fantasy quick.

I would rather have Parsons and Mills, than Mac and Bentley/Uche.

We don't know if Mac's the guy. Parson's a beast, a game changer.

Would you rather trade up for Parsons and take Mills or stand pat for Jones and trade up R2 for Barmore?

Disagree….and I like Mills (Monds too). Just so happy with Mac….

We don't know if Mac is the guy but trading up for Fields would have been a mess. What we saw from Fields this year doesn't justify a trade up and the Patriots have so many needs on defense that they need as many high draft picks as they can get which they wouldn't have if they traded for Fields.

I'm not convinced Mills has a future as an NFL caliber starting QB at all but we'll see.

Rotational Player and Threatening Starter's Job
Statistically Fields had a terrible rookie season passing. He had more than 1 passing TD in one game only and never eclipsed 300 passing yards. That said his best receiver (Robinson) struggled through injuries and their most productive receiver was a second-year 5th round pick. Fields also had a reasonably productive season running the ball so he's got dual-threat capability. He looks very raw but has upside athleticism and could develop into a Lamar Jackson type QB (although not as good).

At this point I'd prefer Mac Jones over Fields. As another poster mentioned however I would have preferred a trade up for Micah Parsons with the next pick going after Mills or Trask. Mills was the best rookie QB in the second half of the season and Trask has good potential in the right system. Parsons was the best rookie in the NFL.

Mac Jones had a good season but like the rest of the team he struggled during the 1-4 finish. I think most people agree he needs a legit #1 receiver to go along with Bourne and Myers. Jones is in a tough spot overall when it comes to QB comparisons because there are now several exceptional young quarterbacks in the AFC… Mahomes, Allen, Jackson, Herbert, Burrow and Watson (of course depending on how his off-field issues are resolved).

Obviously Jones has just finished his rookie season and certainly he will improve but all those quarterbacks are clearly better right now. The ceilings of Mahomes, Allen, Jackson and Watson are probably out of reach. Herbert can run a little bit in addition to being a great passer. Burrow had a big jump from his rookie season with a legit WR hierarchy (Chase, Higgins & Boyd).

With McDaniels gone, I'd like to see someone with experience and proven results brought in as the OC. Joe Judge not fitting that description. Also again a clear #1 WR. That paired with a very good o-line and running game and expected improvement from Jones and the offense should be in decent shape. Then you just need a defense to contend with all those other QB's.

Lance was FCS, not D2.

Way too early to say what the right move was. Fields could still go on to be the far better QB.
It was trading up for Fields vs taking Mac and not trading up. That question has already been answered decisively IMO. Nothing I saw from Fields last year makes me think they made a mistake not making that deal. The Pats need all the draft picks they can accumulate right now. The Bears gave the Giants a 1st and a 4th so we know for sure it would have cost the Pats more than that to move up for Fields.

If Fields and Mac were both available at 15 then I might have felt differently. I wish Fields didn't take so many bad sacks. Guys with mobility should be able to escape a lot of those sacks and for whatever reason he can't. That's a red flag. Guess we'll see if things are different there in 2022 now that Nagy is out of the picture.

I'm in the "horde precious picks" school of thought and glad we waited. It will be interesting to see if SF has really harmed its future by giving up all those draft picks. And the Rams too. If they win Sunday, maybe it's worth it, but they have practically no picks. One thing I like about Belichick and the Pats approach is they are always thinking ahead. Even our "all in" the last Super Bowl run was very tame in comparison to what SF and the Rams have done.

5) Would we better off with Mills and another 2nd? Perhaps, or perhaps not. Of course, trading down providing no guarantee at getting Bill's choice at the end of the first.
This is interesting. I think Mills is a very similar type player as Mac (only a bit bigger and stronger arm), and I bet the farm that if Mac was taken before 15, we'd have either traded down a bit and/or selected best OL available or Collins/Phillips and then tried to get Mills in the 2nd. Anyone's guess if Mills would have also beat out Cam before wk. 1. He seems to have the moxie to get it done in this league though, he had very similar stats to Mac, (smaller sample) with a much worse situation. Will be interested to see how each fares in the next 3 years.

Keyshawn not impressed with Mac. Although it's too early to determine Mac's future potential, he makes a few good points.

The real question is: why did BB/Josh manage Mac so much? Was it to bring him along slowly for development purposes or to mask his limitations? Maybe a little of both? Josh said early in the season he wasn't holding back the playbook. We also saw plenty of downfield opportunities where Mac chose the checkdown over a sure TD toss. The 3 attempts in Buffalo may have been the correct game plan but it certainly exposed him to not being able to chuck it under northeast late season weather conditions. Who knows. We'll find out this season now that Josh and Hardegree are gone.

I was going to say that I didn't hear any "belittling" like the headline said but I heard him compare the type of QB Mac is to Scott Zolak. Ouch.

Mac may very well be a QB like an Alex Smith or Kirk Cousins that is elite only if the offense around him is elite. We know Brady can take a team with guys like Meyers, Agholor, Bourne and can elevate them to Super Bowl contention. I don't think Mac has that ability. But we can still win games with a QB like that if we have the right team around him. Alex Smith beat the living crap out of us twice.

With a full NFL offseason we'll learn a lot more about what we have next year. Knowing Bill it wouldn't surprise me if the Patriots push Mac in camp with competition like Stidham or a new draft pick.

He said the type of Patriots QB, not that Mac was like Zolak.

“They protected him as much as they could and got enough out of that. And because he looks the part like the New England quarterbacks of the world — the Scott Zolak types — they think they got something,

We just don't know if Bill's teams can win it all with a non-elite QB since it's never happened before. We'll see.

It was literally a repeat of the game plan they used in the 2008 game with Matt Cassel, just more extreme (Cassel threw 8 passes).

I think year 2 is crucial for Mac to take the next steps. But, he cannot do it alone. He needs the RIGHT COACHES to help him.
Who will they be? That is what I am worried about....

The QB coach will be the most critical coach on this roster next to the OC. If Joe Judge is the main coach working with Mac in August this team is in trouble. But I think the draft already worked out very well for the Pats and I like Mac better than Fields
