Mac as 2024 Pats QB still possible

I could see it, though I'm more inclined to say he gets traded after the draft, possibly during early camp. I can see them signing a mid-level vet (like a Brissett type), drafting someone at 3, then letting Zappe and Mac compete for the 3rd QB role, with it going to whoever seems to have the best attitude going into camp. But as rough as the QB room has been, I'd rather have Mac or Zappe as QB3 than the revolving door we had this past season, so better to keep those options open until you're sure you don't need them.
I agree that the team should not let either QB go until they have replacements. There is some urgency around Mac because Mayo needs to focus on silencing all of the noise ASAP to allow the team to focus on the offseason. The team could trade Mac before the draft if they sign a veteran backup.

Mac’s already damaged goods, he is mentally weak.

Bring Zappe back, I like the idea of bringing Brissett back if you keep the same offensive system… but for gods sakes draft a QB in the first or second round.

Don't know sounds likely he's going to be the starter
This would be the dumbest thing possible. Why?

Take a look at the Giants. The fanbase had given up on Daniel Jones, he entered the last year of his rookie contract when Daboll arrived. Daboll brought fresh energy and Daniel played the best season of his career. He wasn’t great, he was merely serviceable, but they won games.

Enter next offseason and the Giants have to pay Daniel Jones or be left without a QB. They pay him, and he turns back into a pumpkin again. Now they’re saddled with his ridiculous contract.

Get rid of Mac and start over, if Mayo can find his QB in the draft he’ll have four years to build his team around a franchise guy. Mac is not the guy the same way Daniel Jones wasn’t the guy.

Mac won't fetch much in his current state very low returns at a NEED position. I say keep him as a Back-up if you can't get more than a Fourth. Mac can't blame BB this time around I think Mayo will bring in Real #1 type Talent on Offense around here not the Filene's Basement BB types.

Right, because this is the excited reaction of Kraft being all in on Mac after watching him play. Lol, you guys.

Kraft praying??

Based on Mayo's comments yesterday, it doesn't sound like it:

He went so far as to inadvertently call out Jones and the lack of leadership, talking about whether or not the coaching staff deserves blame for how things went, etc, along with admitting the locker room was split - which was surprising.

He also essentially guaranteed they'll win more than four games next year. I highly doubt, with so much at stake, along with having been in those defensive meetings (which gave him a pretty good bead on the locker room), that he'll risk his own job for Mac.

Also sounds to me like he's got plenty of doubt about Jones, which also makes me feel like there's not going to be any rehabilitation project. I think he's seen what he needs to see, and I think Jones gets dealt this offseason.

Well he can't say "Mac sucks and I can't wait to deal him" and watch his already low value plummet to zero value. He has to build him up in order to get anything for him.
I agree he's not going to devalue any player publicly especially a first rounder that he may want to trade or keep as backup.

Mac is entering the last year of his rookie contract. So you either recoup some draft capital from his wasted #1 pick or he walks for nothing. Even a late round draft pick swap is better than nothing.

You also don’t want him on your bench. His teammates know he stinks, by letting him stick around you’re telling everybody there is no accountability for stinking.

I hope you're right
Jones stinks

At best, Mac will be on the roster with a chance to compete against a proven veteran or a top draft pick rookie (either 3rd overall or the beginning of the second round). This is only because he has an extremely low cap hit and does not really cost much to give one last long shot at regaining the starting role. Odds are still that he will be traded or cut to give everyone a fresh start.

Whether or not Mayo thinks Jones got a raw deal by Belichick and could be good QB in the right conditions, he has to know his mental toughness is a concern and that this offense is at least a year or two away from having the pieces around the QB to be the right pieces for a QB like Jones.

And don't give me that Kraft will force Mayo to keep Jones. This isn't the offseason post the Matt Patricia debacle where you could make an argument that all of Mac's problems could be pointed back at Patricia. You can still argue that Belichick ruined Mac and a new start could potentially revive his career as a starter, but the concerns about him completely falling apart under extreme pressure are still there.

I fully expect that the Pats will bring in one or two QBs no matter what they do with Jones and Zappe who will have the inside track as a starter immediately (a veteran or Maye or Daniels) or someone who will be competing for the job immediately and has the inside shot as the long term solution (one of the second tier draft prospects).

I think people are manufacturing a story at this point.

The book is out on Mac. Any defensive player not on the Pats is licking his chops waiting to face him. Defensive players on the Pats have got to see the same things and are banging their heads in exasperation at the thought of the O running thru him.

I am for moving on from both guys. Jones has real mental toughness issues. And Zappe is clearly a back up who thinks he is a starter and doesn't seem to be willing to help a rookie to become the franchise.

Not sure I would tune in for another season of Corky Jones. Please no!

... Or alienate anyone in the locker room. Nothing but sunshine and daisies to the press at this point, especially re: rostered players.

If he's that much of a problem, I wholeheartedly agree. Cut your losses and get him out. But I will add that if Mayo can't navigate that kind of conflict to the point where players are distracted before we've even gotten to camp, he's probably not long for the position anyway. That's part of why he's been hired: He's talked about as a leader of men. This is where you show that leadership. If Mac is a full on rotting, diseased organ, go ahead and remove him. But if he's just a little bit pissy, Mayo should be able to hold things together until after the draft.

Zappe has started 8 games, Mac has started three years (42 games). Zappe has the potential to improve, he played an air raid system in college and had some development needed.

If I’m keeping one it’s Zappe, he costs nothing. Mac is pricy and in the last year of his contract, ship him out and draft another QB in the 1st or 2nd at the latest.

Zappe could be the bridge guy to the rookie, but they should bring another vet in maybe to provide competition.

I mean, if Kraft is truly convinced that Mac just needz moar time, and Bill Belichick was holding him back - well, presumably those folks would watch the True MacCorkle Jones (tm).
The problem is that bb let him throw except Mac threw it to the other team at the end of the game
