Losing Caserio to San Fran would suck [Mod Edit: Caserio has declined to interview]

I agree to a certain extent. There are only 32 GM jobs in the NFL, 31 if you count that BB is GM at the patriots. This is a case of supply greatly eclipsing supply. Whether the candidates are good is irrelevant. If you don't jump at a change to be a GM at a certain point in your life, someone else might take it and potentially might do a great job. Of course, you don't go in blind. But at that level, every candidate who applies has belief that s/he is capable to doing a great job.

I agree 100%. Only 32 positions and openings don't come frequently. The SF job may be the last opening for a while, especially for Caserio (I think Josh will get more looks for years). Yet reaching for that brass ring in SF comes at a cost of working for dysfunctional ownership.

Regards,
Chris

I had expected the Colts GM position to open this season. I'm shifting my prediction to end of next season.

Your position on ownership applies doubly.

So if reports are true Mcdaniels has his sights locked on San Fran. Reports from San Fran Chronicle say that Mcdaniels likes the fact its a storied franchise has a high pick and he can work with a new General manager.
Caserio is interviewing and this seems like a done deal.
Really good friends combine the glowing accomodation that BB bestowed upon Caserio.
I feel Caserio has been excellent and San Fran raiding us.
BB better coach here at a high level for at least 10 years.

I can only hope that Caserio wouldn't want to work for the dysfunctional San Fran ownership. However, it isn't a surprise to me that Mcdaniels and Caserio to San Fran is a rumor. Why? Because this would be a perfect situation for the San Fran ownership (who I suspect is the rumor source).

What has been the problem with San Fran for the last few years? Well, first GM Trent Baalke couldn't work at all (or hardly be in the same room) with Jim Harbaugh, so despite the success that San Fran had with Harbaugh, he was surprisingly let go. Then Jim Tomsula was hired, and then let go after one year. Then, Chip Kelly was hired, rumors of his fighting with Baalke started immediately, and then Kelly was let go. So: near constant war between the GM and the coach, leading to worse and worse team performance.

Why is a Caserio and Mcdaniel pairing a dream situation for San Fran? Not only are they arguably the hottest property as a prospective GM and coach in the NFL, they are very close friends and former college teammates. One would expect that they would work flawlessly together. So: I can figure out why the rumor is being floated by the San Fran ownership, the question is whether or not Caserio and Mcdaniel are really interested. I can only hope not.

Maybe no Caserio means Mcdaniels stays?
I get Boston is amazing city but I dont believe any of the three teams in California would be a hard geographic sale to the Mcdaniels household.
Would be great to keep Nick.
Nick and Josh staying would be outstanding.

If San Fran had any sense they would interview pioli.

He and mcdaniels would be a devastating pair.

If I was Caserio I wouldn't want to work for that owner. And I don't necessarily buy the fact that if Josh fails as a head coach for a 2nd time that he is done as a head coach. He is still very young. It might be harder for him to get a HC job after a 2nd failure but by then if your Josh.. you already banked 25-40 million dollars.

Lets see if Josh stays with his BFF and plans on being the heir.
Or does he want a rebuild challenge with the niners.

Great news now if we can keep one of Josh or Matt and this will be a win this season.
Losing neither is nearly impossible

When asked for comment as to why he declined to interview, Caserio said..."Mee Mee Mee Mee Mee. Mee Mee, mee mee mee mee mee."

They are limited, but there will pretty much always be an opening or more every single year. And unlike young coaches, you don't seem to get too many more chances to be a GM if you blow it the first time.

I know there are some who would argue you take the first job available and run with it and hope for the best, because you may never get that chance again. But Josh and Matt and Nick have all had requests before, and they've interviewed or passed on interviews, and they're still getting chances. There will be other opportunities in the future.

And even if there's a bad year, there are chances to do good again. Josh got ran out of town in Denver, went to the Rams, didn't do much, but came back and did well with the Patriots and got his chances. BB the same after Cleveland. Kyle Shanahan was with the Texans, had a good start in Washginton but eventually bombed there, didn't do much in Cleveland, then lights it up in Atlanta and starts getting HC interviews.

Arians and Zimmer didn't get HC jobs until their 60s. Del Rio did well for a while in Jacksonville, got fired, bounced around a bit as a coordinator before getting another opportunity. At the same time, there's only so many chances to be the head guy before you're branded Wade Phillips or Norv Turner types, great coordinators who can't handle the HC job. I think both would do better now just from experience, but it's doubtful they get that chance.
