Looking Ahead: A timetable of next steps

The Kraft's need to decide on the parameters of the two roles, GM and HC. We've seen it work quite well both ways (GM over HC, HC over GM). The key is to make sure they work together effectively when the inevitable disagreements arise. It's a marriage.

I was asking you a genuine question. What is your concern. In regards to your now what, well I believe once a new head coach is hired BoB will be gone. That is if he doesn’t find a job somewhere else first.
I don't understand what you're asking.

I'm saying that if Mayo is the HC, there will be a bit of a tug of war over the assistant coaches. We won't know if BOB will go with Belichick, if he'll stay with Mayo, if Mayo will go a new way. But whatever happens, the staff is going to be picked apart.

This is why I preferred to have this decision made as quickly as possible.

Washington first put together a 5-man advisory committe, and has already interviewed five top candidates. The Raiders have also interviewed multiple candidates.

We have no way of knowing where the Patriots are in this process, but they are competing with other teams that have already gotten off to a head start and quick lead. They need to request for interviews as soon as possible, but who will be doing the interviewing?

Bringing in some experienced outsiders like Washington has done sounds like a good idea. Would the Krafts be open to that idea? And would doing so just put them further behind? I would have hoped that they would have planned this all out several weeks ago - but the fact that they waited four days just to make today's BB announcement doesn't give me much confidence that the Krafts made such a plan.
A positive is that I think Vrabel will be willing to wait on the Pats.

Gotcha! I say Josh goes with Bill, Billy O goes somewhere else. You’re right though. If Mayo gets the gig, there’s going to be serious struggles for not just coaches but staff all over the place. Does Mayo have the contacts to fill all of those roles? If you bring in Vrabel, you bring in all of Vrabels guys with him. That to me has to count for something.

To me the bigger question is who ends up DC if Mayo or Vrabel are HC? If Vrabel comes in it seems very likely Mayo goes. So there’s a DC opening with either of them as HC.

Does Stevie stay as DC?

Just listening to Barth/Lazar on Catch 22 and they made a fantastically interesting point. BB made pretty much EVERY football decision. BB is now gone. As such there is a complete vacuum on the football side when it comes to making decisions. At such a crucial time of the year we can't afford to have that vacuum in place. As such you have to think decisions will be made soon.
What could possibly go wrong?

Everything is falling in place to squander our highest draft pick in decades. But on the bright side we'll be picking high for years.
"That's how Miami became so good." [Scored 34 combined in 2 games against the Bills, Patriots scored 50.]

So basically the Patriot off season has a few new new parts to it this year.

1.) GM Free Agency
2.) HC Free Agency
3.) Coaching Staff Free Agency
4.) Player Free Agency
5.) NFL Draft
GM Free Agency - mid January
HC Free Agency - late January
Coaching Staff Free Agency - early to mid February
Scouting Combine - late February to early March
Player Free Agency - mid to late March
Patriots spring workouts begin - mid April
NFL Draft - late April
OTAs - late May to early June
Minicamp - mid June
Training Camp - beginning late July

He will probably take interviews, especially as he is one of the very few coaches who can interview with teams right now in person since he is unemployed (the other high profile one being Belichick), but if his agent is telling him that Kraft really likes him, I am sure he will hold a little if possible before committing to a destination. All teams are kind of locked down to the post-January 22nd timeline anyway for coaching hires.

Anybody have any thoughts about Slowik the Texans OC. If we are making a break from the old Patriots way, let make it clean and start a new Patriots way.
Slowik and Ben Johnson are my hopes for HC, both are offensive minded coaches. Slowik just spent a year working with a rookie QB and did well.

Robert is older and Jonathan doesn't come off as being nearly as capable as younger Robert was.
A silent river runs very deep.

I'm fine with Mayo or Vrabel because I want continuity for the defense.

I might even prefer Vrabel more because he'll bring over coaches with him.

Mayo is concerning in that he'll be competing with Belichick for coaches.

Of course, the O'Brien/McDaniels situation should be an even bigger concern for everyone.
To feed my family I would rather stick with young guy and not with the older accomplished one whos' days in the league are numbered. I am sure that could go into a position Coaches thinking.

McDaniels is making $60m over the next 5 years

I would favour getting a GM first. Get a philosophy and a scouting team in place. Evaluating players is paramount. And getting FA / the draft right is step one to improvement.

Very unlikely the game day HC will ‘win us many games in 2024’. But getting new faces that are building towards a winner is key.

I think Kraft is gonna be a bit more hands on with football related decisions going forward.

I think our Staff especially on the Offensive side is wayyyy overrated. The D now that's a different story but we would have a head Start with Mayo. I would prefer Josh over BOB though who can go with BB for all I care.
