Let Drake be Drake....

I constantly see him (and have for years) talked about around here as overrated and somewhat of a detriment to the offense..

..and he aint no Law Firm (dawg)
Law Firm was very average but he was reliable. Never worried about fumbles.

Still weird that Drake played so little in the preseason and not at all in the Giants game. He needs work and a lot of it.

Bedard compared Mayo's camp last season to Vrabel's this year.

Mayo's approach was to do everything he could do to win Game 1. Lots of gassers up the hill during training camp so everyone was in shape. Start the vet instead of the rookie at QB. Worked good for Game 1, not so good thereafter.

Bedard said Vrabel's camp was noticeably softer than Mayo's and feels the guys aren't in great shape physically. Vrabel has now lost all four of his first games of the seasons he's been an NFL HC. It seems he favors the gradual ramp up, is more comfortable that he will be given time for the team and in particular their QB to improve.

It seems with Bill we got both: gassers up the hill and the slow start as well, but then we got the great endings...

I'm also starting to wonder if bringing Josh back was a mistake. System isn't the best fit for what Drake can do.

Bottom line is nothing can be done about it during the season, there's no way you change the entire offensive system during the season. I'm sure Vrabel can get into Josh's ear and shift the emphasis a bit but overall we gotta let it run its course for this season then evaluate at the end.

I don't how you can drop back and none of these guys are open Diggs - Pop - Henry and Boutte?? I know the D get's paid to play too but C'mon.
Douglas has a small window you need to fit the pass into, so when he’s open you have to hit him quick and precise, Tom Would of loved him.

Boutte he’s not a burner, he’s more of a upgraded Kenbrell Thompkins,
He is more of a savy route runner though.

Diggs was used sparingly and I think we need to throw caution to the wind as he is our most accomplished WR.

Willams we need to run him deep to keep defenses honest.

I want to see Henderson in the passing game more, I think we should have Chism out there to make one or two people follow him to open the middle up.

Yea when I say dawg, I remember Law Firm as a guy who kept drives going, could hit a homerun once in a while, didn't fumble much, and wasn't injury prone. I could be wrong on all accounts as my memory is beginning to fail me.

Don't tell that to Homer Patsfans who overrate their own. We're gonna have to eat his Bad contract too: the writings on the wall. What horrible contracts; some of these Pats players have Idols of Wolf and Mayo in their bedrooms.
Twin i said yesterday we had 2 all pro caliber TEs gronk and Hernandez.. we were dropping 33 PPG with those 2... you sew how your boy Maher former 1st round pick was open becuase of Bowers.. we need to take a TE in draft brother..

S Diggs caught 6 or 7 Targets and we saw Him on the sidelines some. Diggs is our best WR he'll get better week by week.

So true. Looked it up and yeah Vrabels Titans teams generally started slower. Started hot in 2020 but obviously that was just a weird season.

Oh wait. Slow start for Bill? Hater!111!!1111! Or something. Lol

If we ended up doing what Vrabel did in Tennessee with tannehill.. 2019...would be a revelation.. can you imagine how the tide would turn for the NE media talking heads...

I had a long night.

With more thought (after wanting to blame JMD for same old crap)... Maye may need an entire year to have this be his real professional development in the NFL. It won't be as quickly productive, and he'll likely struggle with timing and accuracy...
BUT - it might actually be the best chance for him to become a successful long-term NFL QB.
If they went for the quick result, and simplified and let him play like Caleb Williams, we might see some excitement, but it wouldn't last. He does need to learn to diagnose D (pre-snap), call protections, call audibles, and throw on time.
I'm willing to give it 2 months to see how things develop. Does Vrabel & JMD believe enough in their plan to be patient?

IDK, I don't think I saw a very patient guy when JMac was our OC and then later as HC of da Raiders, and that's not a good thing.

Let's hope he realizes he has to make the changes to his system that need to be made for Drake to show improvement, or he'll find himself unemployed again.

As above, it's gotta run its course for this entire season, there's no changing the offensive system's fundamentals in one season.

I do think he can do what he did with Cam and call more RPOs, hopefully he sees that he needs to do that in the near future.

I think if he's trying to turn Drake into a precision pocket passer in the next two months, he's going to fail.

It's pretty clear to me that this season is basically extended training camp.

He was a raw QB coming out of college and now he's on his 2nd NFL offense.

Time to lower expectations and see how things play out.

You don't do that with an older WR coming off a major injury that you signed to a three-year contract.

To what end? So we end up with seven wins instead of six?

I listened to Bedard's two post-game podcasts yesterday and he makes similar points. A lot of what Drake put on tape was bad, no denying that. Bad reads, bad mechanics, bad throws. Yet he also said is what Drake needs is more reps. Lots of them. That gives the staff more tape to grind, more opportunities to illustrate to him what he is doing wrong, more opportunities for him to use that teaching the next time he's in the same situation. To me this could easily be a 1-2 year process.

Another point Bedard made was that Drake was not "maniacal" the way other QBs of the past are. He thought if he had a bad play Drake's attitude was to not get pissed off but to say to himself that's just one play, do better next time. I have a long running debate about this topic with others. Are today's young athletes as driven as the ones of previous generations? Is it fair to expect Drake to be a maniac like Brady was or is OK if they have different approaches? The same is true in F1 auto racing. The current championship leaders, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, are chill dudes compared to cut-throat legends of the recent past such as Lewis Hamilton or even more recently Max Verstappen. Can their approach be changed? Should it? I don't know.
Maybe athletes are different than students, but what I see in the classroom is that if you give hard feedback, most students will consult their lawyers or therapists. It's pretty rare to see a maniacal commitment to learning.

Meanwhile in other places, tiger moms rule. Now, get off my lawn!

We had a top 5 OL during that time as well.. Benny could also close out games.. when's the last time we can say a RB closed out a game? Seems like our RBs get clothesline instead..

Down and Miami twin help me out is there anyone to fear on thier defense? If not out guys should have enough room to run..

Lazar said when he watched the film it looked like the rookies on the offensive line started to get gassed towards the end of the game.

BJGE wasn't average even though he didn't have that explosive speed that posters here were screaming for.

In the last 25 years, the Pats have only had SIX rushers who broke 1,000 yards. BJGE is one of them.

I would like Maye to remember that Pop Douglas is 5'8 not 6'8: those over throws to a wide open Receiver is egregious.
I have a theory that Hollins will take more snaps in the slot then Douglas against the Dolphins. Hollins should NOT be taking snaps from Boutte...clearly...but he could pull down those high throws from Maye, be a redzone target and also block on what I think will be a big rushing day.

In 2010 the ypc average in the league was 4.2. BJGE ypc in 4.4
In 2011 the ypc in the league was 4.29. BJGE was 3.7

Green-Ellis played from 2008-2013 with a career ypc of 3.9 while the league average in that span was 4.23.

He had one season here slightly above average but overall he was a below average to average RB.

Good insights here. It is my opinion that Vrabel and McDaniels have the training wheels on Maye right now just wanting him to get acclimated and focus on the fundamentals. It'll probably be that way for 3-4 weeks, and then they will start to expand. This works out anyway because Diggs still needs time to get right, and Kyle Williams needs to adjust to the pros as well. So by the time they are ready to expand things with Maye, two of his best weapons will be ready to rock too.
