LB Dane Fletcher Waived per Reiss

After what Belichicks been doing to other teams, he's definitely gone.

Should be a sought after player for next season since he has shown potential AND comes from experience on a highly regarded team.

Its risky and it may bite them in the ass

He'll be in NY by Wednesday. Too bad, he looked full of promise.

coughlan definately returns the favour

It's not like he's the next LT...he's been injury prone so far.....I'll be glad if he makes it...if not, it's not like it's Gronk or Vince.

Horrible, horrible, horrible move.

Given that BB clearly knows how the preseason waiver system works, I'd say that he's made a move he's probably quite comfortable with. It's not as if he couldn't have held onto Fletcher for a couple more weeks before IRing him, after all.

Trying to get him on IR!

This is definitely a surprise, but it's not as if BB & co. don't know what the rest of us know. That means they are cutting Fletcher with 100% understanding and acceptance that they may lose rights to him.

But what does that really mean?

Fletcher is in his third season, and according to Rotoworld is only under contract through this season. Assuming that's accurate, what they're giving up is the right to tender him as an RFA.
Now consider that Fletcher was undrafted, so they would have to tender him at the $2 million level. That seems unrealistic, don't you think?

So unless I have something wrong (certainly possible!), they actually have nothing to lose at all by cutting him.

I would actually expect the Giants to claim him, their LB spot is probably the weakest position on their roster outside of maybe RB.

However, Fletcher offers no immediate value to anyone, and Hightower, a player who most would assume will be a far superior player than Dane Fletcher, would have most likely surpassed him on the depth chart before Fletcher plays another snap in the NFL.

Fletcher was a solid backup for us, nothing more.

Thank you for this post. It makes me feel much better.

That makes sense.

Hopefully he makes it through waivers and we can get him to IR.

I don't think most teams are in a position to use a roster spot to look ahead the way the Pats can.

He's unsigned beyond this season so a UFA or RFA next season coming off an ACL...the surgery on which likely hasn't even been done yet...so likely before you have a chance to assess him. Ballard will be an ERFA next season and a RFA in 2014. And his rehab should be pretty far along later this season since his injury occurred back in February so theoretically he could even come off PUP this season. Apples and Oranges.

Why would the Giants claim a backup LB who's just torn his acl and will definitely be out for the final season on his contract?

Pure spite.

I guess it would be depend if being injured this training camp counts as a accrued season

IR counts as an accrued season. So another team claiming him only gets the obligation to pay his IR salary, and the right to pay him a guaranteed $2 million next season if desired.

My guess: he'll be a Patriot in 2013.

Timing is everything.
All the teams are at 90 players and getting ready for bloodletting in the next few weeks. I don't think the risk is as great as others that he gets taken off of waivers. At this point in camp, I think it will be hard to cut some guy who has worked his tail off the last few weeks to open up a spot for a player who will not be available this year. I think it was easier for BB to take Ballard like he did before training camp started as he was not taking the place of a guy out on the field working in camp. In the next few weeks good players will get cut and they will be closer to be ready to play then Fletcher is.

I think Fletcher will clear waivers and be on IR. (I have been wrong once or twice.)

Edited to add - the days are getting shorter and the season is approaching. I think it is about time for Brian Waters to join the team
