Law of unintended consequences about the lost 1st rounder

I agree. We lost half an NFL draft, and we are good enough to overcome it. We are also well-placed enough with existing player contracts and cap money.

Just because you say it repeatedly doesn't make it true.

(A) Not all drafts are created equally in the first place.
(B) What you've lost is, in theory, the ability to pick one very good player. Now, with Belioli, the odds of that player turning out to be very good are very near 100%, but still, it's one player. Would you argue that Maroney is equivalent to Jackson + Thomas + Gostkowski + O'Callaghan + Smith + Andrews? I wouldn't.

Plus, as a lot of people are noting, the strength of this draft is going to depend largely on how many underclassmen come out. The senior class doesn't appear to have a heck of a lot that the Pats could really use.

My private theory is that the league and the Pats have a secret deal to reduce the penalty to a 2nd or 3rd round sometime in March when nobody gives a crap about football.

It's a win-win for the Pats and the League.
