Landry-concerning if true

There was always a possibility he wasn’t going to be ready for week one or would start the season on the PUP.

Ponder starts, Jacas and Swinson get thrown into the fire. Dremont also gets more snaps. Hold down the fort until Landry returns and gives them a shot in the arm.

Not surprised just IR him already or a injury settlement.
That's not how it works. He's on the PUP list. If they cut him, they save a whole whopping 1.35M this year. They're not going to get Landry to take an Injury Settlement. Plus 11M of his salary is guaranteed.

Tyquan Lewis wouldn’t hurt…6’3 270..decent rusher & has good size & technique to set the edge. OSU guy as well..

There is clearly a reason that Vrabel didn't sign Clowney dating back to last year when Clowney was a free agent.
Yes there is.
Doesn’t mean it’s the right decision.
If our young guys step up it’s a moot point.
If we are left wanting in the pass rush dept, then it will look like a bad decision.

Any decent vets out there worth signing?
We will see after cuts come - there could be some veterans let go by teams with depth.

Thibedeaux could be had via trade but he's on the expensive side with his 5th year guranteed

No one's going to give the Giants what they're asking for, even though I think he's probably worth what they're asking for. For the exact reason you specified.

$15 million is a lot to pay him to sit on their bench as he's effectively 3rd on the depth chart there, but I'm sure they will cycle him in.

The Seahawks are reportedly interested in him too but not willing to give up the draft picks the Giants also want.

Might be a long season of watching mediocre QBs getting too much time and finding the open guys time after time.. ugh
We'll have lots of blitzing; our secondary will be up to the task.

Clowney should’ve been the guy damnit!
Very good run defender.
8.5 sacks in 14 games last year playing about 45% of the snaps.
$5.5M is what he signed for.
This is a miss on our part imo.
Maybe Clowney didn't want to come here.

We need to be real. We need an upgrade to Swinson. That shouldn't be difficult. The issue is how much to pay for which one-year rental.

I think this is the strat. Which is why adding depth in the secondary was so important this offseason.

Yes, it would be even more effective with better overall front 6 players, but this is how you cover up a below-average Edge and LB corps.

Clowney has been a mercenary since he first left the Texans.
Indeed. Maybe he wanted to go back home. Play in a dome 10 times. Maybe that was worth a couple bucks? A team where he can play 15 snaps a game.

Maybe Clowney didn't want to come here.
Maybe not.
More likely we didn’t offer him a deal.
I’m hopeful for the young guys, but hope isn’t a plan, and certainly isn’t Vrabs plan.
He’s been on the money to date, so I will defer until we see what happens on the field.

Blitzing is great, and we did it a **** ton in the playoffs. But it’s not sustainable over a full season. Teams with decent QBs and OCs will eat that **** alive.

Sure. That's the risk you take.

It can work if you have the secondary to back it up. I think they might have the secondary to back it up. If they don't, they'll get croaked, and you have to rely on your high-powered offense to win shootouts.

Honestly, it's not the most well-balanced way to build a team, but Vrabel/Cowden/Highsmith weren't dealing with 50 all-pros on the team when they got here. It's a refreshing approach based in reality. This would also explain their emphasis on turnovers this offseason - an uptick in that particular variance could push one or two games a different way - and a turnover gets that stuff off the field.

We learned (at least I hope we did), an important lesson last year, one that many of us knew already. You can't rebuild a talent-depleted roster in a year, or two years. You *can* win a lot of games in the time it takes to fill the gaps, though.

Good points.
And makes Gonzo being here and happy paramount to that strategy if that’s how we have to play D this year.

Two thoughts :

1. This isn’t a surprise to me as I believed all offseason Landry was washed and you probably would never get much out of him again. So, in that way , this news doesn’t change my BP.

2. What DOES is that it seems the operated under the assumption that he’s be back and contribute so didn’t do much. That bothers me. We weren’t great last year at edge rusher. Jacas is not known as a great rusher. Neither is Jones. They needed one dude who, even if he sucked at run defense, could get after the QB. They didn’t find that guy.

Annoying.

But, maybe someone gets cut who can help.

And finally, this roster was ASS when Vrabel took over. Couching my own expectations of how long it takes to really change that. What hurts is you have two players in Gonzo amd Maye who will take up so much cap between them (if paid and kept) that you really can’t be great many other places.

Didnt Van Noy produced well with Baltimore last year?

Good veteran, good tackler, maybe not the best pass rusher, but he was a good soldier for us
