Knee braces: worth wearing to help prevent injuries?

you have a safety 25 yards down the field when the ball is snapped.......you send gronk on a route to the left, but it was clear he was looking for the ball towards the middle, turning to the right. given these conditions, I'm not sure how anyone expects things to turn out well......Ward did his job......what else was he going to do? what would any 210 lb guy do in that instance, try to wrap up a 270lb guy with a text book tackle, likely crushing your sternumin the process? nope....most would do exactly what ward did

watch the replay.......ward never leaves his feet

the only thing you can really say about the curcumstances is that the whole thing was extremely unfortunate.

I've watched the replay.

1) Ward didn't start off lined up 25 yards deep. He was 15 yards off the line (normal for a Cover 1) and backed up, then rotated over.

2) Ward DID launch himself. Right at the second that he hit Gronkowski in the knee.

What else could he do? Gee. I don't know. Hit Gronk anywhere above the knees and below the shoulders. Which is a huge target on a guy like Gronk. 6 inches higher and we aren't having this conversation because Gronk's thigh takes the hit.

Harrison would tell you to your face that it was a bad tackle and that you don't go for the guys knees. You go for the thighs to the armpits. And, considering that Ward had help in the form of Jackson and Skrine, the idea that a text book wrap up tackle would have gotten his sternum crushed is BS.

I was always taught that, when you tackle, you want to hit your opponent inwards and upwards so that his feet go out from under him and his own momentum takes him down because your shoulder acts like the pivot. I was NEVER taught to launch myself at an opponents knees and hope for the best.. One, a good one can jump over you. Two, you can hurt him. Three, it's very easy for you to get hurt that way and the point is to not do something to hurt yourself.

this is ridiculous. So when there is a deep safety Brady should just throw the ball away because clearly someone is going to get hurt?

Knee braces?

A thought: require all players to wear knee braces.

That would equalize the slowing effect on all players.

Harrison had a well-deserved reputation as one of the dirtier players to ever play the game in his San Diego days. He did more than his fair share of going for guys' knees.

How's about having a few grams of plastic explosive in the brace so if a Receiver gets hit on the knee a small device explodes outwards and decapitates the tackler? This would definitely give a whole new meaning to the phrase "blow out a knee," while also appealing to video game lovers by building an innovative bridge between the worlds of fantasy and reality!

[Unfortunately, over the years I've discovered that there are many out here who are devoid of either a sense of humor (albeit a sick sense of humor) or sarcasm. So, for the record, that's a joke.]

You simply have no idea what launching means.....through the time of contact, at no point did ward leave his feet.....textbook shoulder tackle the ended very badly

There's this thing called an audible, or the possibility of choosing another target.

My memories of Rodney are of him hitting high, trying to dislodge the ball. He played till the echo of the echo of the whistle.

Well... Today, he'd be hitting low

There's nothing that can prevent that sort of injury. Ward's hit was completely clean, and textbook. Go low to take down a much bigger man. Gronkowski tends to run a little high, so this was probably inevitable. Human knees are incredibly fragile, and aren't made to withstand impact from another human being wearing rock-hard headgear. Tackle football is bloodsport.

It's one thing to lament head injuries and the brain damage they can cause (especially when the full extent and risk of this is unknown to both the public and the players), it's another to expect rule changes to try to mitigate the fact that human knees (and other joints) are really quite vulnerable to impact, cutting awkwardly, landing funny, and a million other things.

i wasn't aware the textbook called for leading with the head, arms at his side....

Rodney was a headhunter, but he's also infamous for the dirty hit on Trent Green's knee in the preseason that launched Kurt Warner's career. He was an equal opportunity goon.
