NFL.com news: Early draft picks, QB demand give Belichick free reign

Let's say a team like Buffalo jumps up to No. 28 and also gives the Patriots a third-round pick and takes Christian Ponder. Then the Patriots trade No. 33 to the Titans for their pick and a third-round selection with Tennessee grabbing Ryan Mallett. That would give New England picks 34, 43, 68 and 77 to go along with 17, 60, 74, and 92.

The demand for quarterbacks in this draft could wind up putting the Patriots in a position to have eight picks in the top 92 if they want that many. It's becoming clear that the Patriots could end up steering teams toward the quarterbacks they want.

Yeah, I have a bit of trouble seeing this happen exactly this way (four thirds! whee! ), but I think that the basic idea is certainly plausible.

ETA: Kirwan also notes that instead of trading down for a 2011 3, they could take a "next draft" 2.

I guess that would mean that BB prefers shotguns to rifles.

I would'nt mind this senerio at all. The value of this draft is in the second round. Here is a potential breakdown if this were to happen.

Picks 28 and possibly 33 are for sale. Here are some options listed below;

Point value for what we could get in return for 28:

Bills- 34(2nd), 98 (4th)
Bengals - 35(2nd), 99 (4th), 195 (7th)
Cardinals: 38(2nd), 102 (4th), 134 (5th), 198 (7th)
Titans: 39(2nd), 109 (4th),142 (5th), 167 (6th), 199 (7th)
49rs: 45(2nd), 76(3rd)

Picks after trading to Bengals;

17(1st), 33(2nd),35(2nd),60(2nd),74(3rd),92(3rd),101(4th),125(4th)

Picks after trading number 28 to Bengals and then number 33 to Tenn:

17(1st), 35(2nd),39(2nd),60(2nd),74(3rd),92(3rd),101(4th),109(4th),125(4th)

Mock using this senerio;

17: Cam Haywood
35: Jabaal Sheard
39: Stefen Wisniewski
60: Ras-I Dawling
74: Jordon Toddman
92: Trade for 2nd next year
101: John Moffit
125: Trade for 3rd next year

This draft gives us two front seven players who can play right away. It also adds depth to the secondary. All three guys have been team leaders and have good charactor. Sheard did have an altercation off of the field but is supposedly a good guy and a great teamate. It also adds to the O-line with two new guards who can also play center. I believe Wisniewski can play gaurd this year and replace Koppen at Center next year. Moffit and Wisniewski both add that physical presance. I believe Toddman is a good complement on what we already have at RB. He can backup both Woody and BGE. He will also help with the KR team. If your not sold on Toddman (New Bedford boy) there are plenty of other talented RB to be had in round 3. Also, as always, we trade two picks from this year into next years draft. A 3rd and a 4th for a 2nd and a 3rd next year.

I have always considered Kirwan a closest Patriots fan.

I think you have to remember that at a certain point, this draft falls off a cliff as far as talent goes and I think because of that BB will want to stockpile as many second rounders as he can get his hands on.

Given his draft history, BB needs to trade away both his third round picks for 2012 picks.

I really don't want the patriots stockpiling that many picks unless they are going to then use them to move back up inside forty and take four or five players between 34-44, and even then I would rather see them trade back from 17 into the early twenties and then up from 28 into a slot right behind that pick. After that they could trade the 33 and use those picks to move back up inside 40 for a couple more players.

Give me quality over quantity this year.

The team is already young enough and we already have a ridiculous number of picks. In fact I would prefer we do almost the exact opposite. Condensing all our picks into fewer, higher picks.

Conversely, if some other team wants to restock with lots of reasonably high picks, trading DOWN to 28 + 33 could be very appealing to them, because of the possibility of trading further. Ditto if they want to use one of the picks on grabbing a QB themselves.

Such a case could be made for a majority of the teams in the top 15.

I actually think there will be alot of trade activity as teams will focus more on need in this draft than they have in prior years because there has been no chance to address needs in free agency. I think teams are going to target certain players who address big needs and make moves to get them. I don't think teams will be as cautious about maintaining pick value or protecting future drafts as they may have been in the past. If that proves to be the case then the Patriots are in even better shape than other drafts as they are masters at moving around and have made so many deals around the league in recent years that they are used to dealing with other front offices and will be working every line all through the first 2 days of the draft and moving all over the place.

What we don't and won't know until draft day is how and where they see the value in this draft, and whether or not they feel it is worth it to move up early or defer and take a boatload of picks in the second and third. Like others i want impact players and quality over quantity but they may feel the impact players are going to be there between 30-90 and go heavy that route rather than moving up for players between 10-30.

Even though it is like watching paint dry i like watching the draft and will miss watching it this year as i'll be working. On the other hand I get to see the compressed version when I get in so I won't have to suffer through all the down time between picks. I'm guessing I can watch the first round in about 45 minutes and still get most if not all of the action. The only question will be whether or not i can put off following it on my phone or wait until i get in. Like every other thing that is on delay I'm betting someone will tell me what they did before i get home.
