Kaufman: Pats do not intend to sign vet QB. They are "comfortable" with their quarterback situation

then why work out Yates?

They must really feel there is a very good chance that Garoppolo can go.

Well, I can think of 2 possible legitimate reasons: 1) the medical prognosis on JG changed for the better, and/or 2) Yates was the only one familiar with their system who was interested in possibly disrupting his life for a 10 day gig.

To my knowledge, they'd never worked out Yates previously. Yates is one of the more mobile QBs and he performed decently enough a few years back for Houston. He was under O'Brien's offense last season before he tore his ACL.

As for no contract. Yates is only 9 months post ACL tear. He may not be able to pass a physical yet.

EDIT: Corrected where Yates played and when he played decently going into the play-offs in 2011

Because there was still a question on Garoppolo when they called him? Plus it's not like he's just been living in Foxboro, he had to actually travel from wherever he is living and it's not like he flew private.

Because somebody has the job of scheduling workouts. "Do your job" includes them.

Also, keeps everybody else wondering wtf is going on...

Yeah, as Curran indicated today, O'Brien's system is one which Yates is familiar with and has similarities to McDaniels' system. Yates was with the Texans last season. I, also, have no recollection of Yates ever having been here before.

Don't know if Field Yates and TJ Yates are actually related but they've got some decent banter going..

However, I have to wonder if the fact that Field works for BSPN was listed as a negative under intangibles for TJ..
