Patriots Player Departure Josh Gordon Stepping Away?

Not open for further replies.
Valentine was on the Pats PS till October 8, then was replaced by Frank Herron.

He was signed to the Cards' PS shortly after that then released at the end of November. Seattle picked him up for their PS in early December, then the Cards poached him back about a week later (December 12th).

So, Valentine is on the Cards' active roster, probably through the end of the season (three game minimum).
Thanks, maineman. You do a great job of keeping up with this kind of stuff. It is much appreciated.

Because hes a great football player when on the straight and narrow. Only costs a 5th round pick and he delivered up until this week.

Just for perspective ...

In 2017, the Pats won an RFA bid to get Mike Gillislee from the Bills. Gillislee was active for 9 games, contributing 398 yards and 5 TDs. He cost the Pats a 5th-rounder in the 2017 draft and $3.97M (almost $10,000/yard gained).

Gordon was acquired in trade for a 2019 5th-rounder (getting a 2019 7th-rounder back). He was active for 11 games, contributing 720 yards and 3 TDs. He cost the Pat about $557k (about $775/yard gained).

Let's say that, instead of putting injury-prone Jordan Matthews on IR for his hamstring injury in Camp, the Pats had kept him on the active roster, and that he'd recovered enough to begin playing in wk-4. Let's say he put up the same numbers as Gordon did (Matthews has actually contributed far less than that in 12 games in Philly for exactly what Gordon cost), and then tore his ACL in a pickup basketball game this past Monday.

Would the situation now be any different? Would people feel any different about Matthews than they do about Gordon?

Only a blind fool can't see and understand that a team that was already a relatively mediocre playoff team was just seriously impacted on the offensive side of the ball, and that said impact delivered a huge blow to the team's chances of winning the Super Bowl.

Acknowledging that isn't quitting. It's accepting the reality of things.

Once again, those aren't the fans that I'm talking about. I'm talking about fans who said that the Pats are done and/or give them no chance to even reach a SB this year. That's quitting in my book and it's especially crazy talk when it's about the TB/BB Pats with two games left and a chance at a #2 seed.

It's weird to accuse fans of quitting. I mean, we just watch the games. I know people forget that here, but it literally doesn't matter what fans think.

I reacted to that moment watching offense fail and refs calling holding on a perfect block by cannon.

If you lose games like that after the miam gaffe... It feels like end of "Patriots as we know them"

Now , a week later. Time to reboot (no pun intended) with new game plan... And this is mostly on coaching and leadership. Once again , get Patterson 15 touches and you win the game. That guy has made the best plays in losing efforts.. get him involved mcditz.

You must be retired

In terms of the amount of work I've been doing (volunteer), not so retired. In terms of annual income, definitely retired.

But, spreadsheets have always been my thing, regardless.

Man. What a terrible place for my first post. Die-hard Browns fan, long time Pats fan as well. No bandwagon bs, lost a close friend in the late 80s who was a rabid Pats fan, have rooted for your team ever since. Loving BB and watching the career of the GOAT has made it a lot easier (and a lot of my "so-called" friends hate me even more).

First things first, damn people, I have no idea how you can be cashing in your chips before the playoffs even begin. You have TOM BRADY. I could swear I've watched this guy pick receivers off the street and make them pro bowlers. It might not look pretty on paper right now... but on a cold day in January, when Mahomes looks across the field at the Man, the Myth, all bets are off. This guy can do the "un-do-able" and has a coach by his side that's cast from the same mold. Shake it off guys!

Josh Gordon. Wow, I just shake my head. What a wasted career. Do I feel bad for him? I guess, a little... but how bad can you really feel? I feel bad for the 9 to 5er that struggles to make ends meet and can't walk away from addiction. No resources, no bright, shiny future. Just a pile of muck and no way out. I felt bad for a kid I treated like a son who was, by all accounts, days from death with a heroin addiction. He's five years clean with a beautiful family, a budding career and serves as an inspiration to all around him. Josh has had every opportunity, all the resources in the world, and everything to look forward to. He's failed, miserably. What to do besides shake your head in disbelief?

That said, anyone that thinks poor Josh is the poster-child for unfair rules and is just getting picked on for "smokin' a little weed" - you must be out of your mind. Josh is a drug addict. He's been drinking "purple drank" since high school. OPIATES. It's no walk in the park and takes a strong individual to walk away from, but people do it everyday.

Remember DeMar DeRozan and K Love and their "courageous" coming out party when talking about depression and mental illness? Josh and his agent said "bingo!" He pulled that at the beginning of training camp and tried it again this week. I don't want to sound heartless, but let's be honest... doesn't everyone drug addict, by definition, also have a mental health issue? If you come out and talk about it you're a hero and deserve sympathy, plain and simple. If I was a betting man (I am), I would bet that Josh burnt a test or didn't show for one right before camp, hid behind his "illness", and ran off to never-never-land to see what "the Rog" would do about it. Roger gave him his last-last chance and Josh laughed and continued doing what he does.

I watched the Browns organization prop this dude up while he kept up his shenanigans for six years. Six years of unwavering support from organization and players, six years of support from fans. Six years of lies... second hand smoke, didn't know he couldn't drink cough syrup with codeine, didn't know he couldn't get smashed on the team plane after the last game because he thought he could drink "now that the season is over".

Raw deal? Yes, b*llshit tartar served on a silver platter... by Josh, for Josh. It's a shame but it is what it is. Some people just can't walk away, and certainly can't see the forest through the trees.

Keep your heads up, Pats fans, just another bump in the road. The rest of the league is just a little more scared now than they were a few days ago. The last thing you want to do to BB and the GOAT is tell them they "can't".

Thanks for stepping into the fray Brown's fan. The following paragraph says what I've been saying to the quitters here

"I have no idea how you can be cashing in your chips before the playoffs even begin. You have TOM BRADY. I could swear I've watched this guy pick receivers off the street and make them pro bowlers. It might not look pretty on paper right now... but on a cold day in January, when Mahomes looks across the field at the Man, the Myth, all bets are off. though some of them are now doing a major backstep and saying that they aren't quitting, even though their words said that they were. Glad to see an unbiased fan sees it as well.

Anyway, back to the Browns for now. I've been a Browns fan since the late 50's but became a Pats fan in 1960. I've been to two Pats vs Browns games in Cleveland, in 2000 (Belichick's first game back) & 2010, and I must say that the Browns fans were real good to me those times. It probably helped that the Browns won both games.

I went to a great bar (seemed more like an old west saloon) in an area that they used to call the Flats or something. They served a giant breakfast before the game and would offer up tickets over a loudspeaker. I remember hearing "2 for the pound" constantly. I wanted to grab some tickets there but my friend the Browns fan said that it wasn't a good idea to go there in Pats colors.

It looks like the Browns are finally heading in the right direction and with the right HC and GM could make a SB run in the future. I'll be pulling for them.

Good luck and welcome to the Good Ship Patriot, even if some of our fans our jumping overboard.

Spreadsheets are my thing.

I agree that they're fun to work with. They make it much easier to make comparisons for different criteria. I have onee for AFC vs NFC, QB comps, Coaching Comps, NFL Titles and Playoffs that I try to keep up to date. I also use one for golf.

Wrong on two counts.

1) What's really weird is calling yourself a fan and then quitting on THIS team when they're still in the hunt for a bye with two games left.
2) If it didn't matter what fans think then this board and any like it wouldn't exist.

I searched for a dong and didn’t see one so you’re in the clear. Post op at the very worst. You need to get that girl a burger though. How much blow have you two done over there? And how is the blow over there? Asking for a friend.

Merry Christmas... Ding.. dong. Ding DONG. keep searching.. maybe santa will bring one for you...

Nobody is quitting.. it's frustration mostly but all fans will be back cheering this Sunday

Go back and read some of the early posts (if they haven't been edited) and you'll see that some fans did indeed quit. Some of them are trying to backpedal now and/or are playing semantics but I know what I read.

Quit: to give up or resign; let go; relinquish

No one's jumping overboard. The Pats run of success has trained us to know what a championship bound team looks like (in December especially). This team doesn't have it this year. There are too many flaws (e.g. - can't stop the run, can't play on the road) and are playing their worst football at a time when they should be playing their best.

That doesn't mean that people here will stop watching the games. They're just being realistic about their chances.

I keep an annual workbook for the roster that begins with the off-season 90-man and has tabs for player acquisitions, cuts/waivers, tryouts, practice squad, reserve lists, etc. A line for each player including pre-draft measureables, age, birthday, etc.

I also have an annual workbook for weekly injury reports, transactions and gameday rosters, and another workbook for coverage/pressure/blocking/tackling stats.

Just makes things easier to lookup compared to firing up a bunch of different websites each time.

And, oh yeah... watch out for my Brownies next year.

A couple of moves and the Browns are serious division contenders.

GB has fallen on hard times and some point to the loss of Dorsey. The man can draft.

Gordon pulled the savvy move stepping away for his "mental well being" before Goodell could lower the boom because of his latest substance abuse violation. Just like submitting an "I aint workin here no more" resignation before being fired. A classic George Costanza move. This way, you go off on youre own terms instead of being shown the door because of your own actions.

Gordon could not have landed in a better place here in NE where he can string along whole new group of emphatic believers along for the ride.

Here's a few of the posts. I know there are more but I didn't want to go through the other half of the thread.

Welp. That's it for us
Sucks that the coaching staff whiffed on the position and we had to rely on him. That was always the threat. That's it for the 2018 Patriots. Night, night.
We're on to 2019.
Stick a fork in us we’re done
It's over. It was over with Gordon.
That one is actually a double quit followed by a confirmation...
It really was.
I was in the process of trying to delude myself into thinking we could still make a run this year but I can only delude myself so much. It's over.
At some time the Homers just need to relent and admit that it just isn’t our year.
The season is over. That's not crying. That's just calling it like it is.
Wait, are people really arguing that this team can still make a SB run?

So please, tell me how I'm wrong and that isn't quitting on the team. It looks like the definition of the word.
