Jets and Vrabel almost happened

That's what complete control means. That Vrabel's in charge of personnel and Cowden is his man in personnel.
Post BB, Kraft expressed regret that he gave BB total control. Mayo had little if any control.

Vrabel, went through hell in Tennessee with his GM. So, its doubtful that he wanted to repeat that experience.

I believe there's some truth to it. I think Vrabel wanted to coach somewhere and if he was given complete control, all the better.

Do not kid yourself. The Jete franchise is inherently dysfunctional via meddling ownership (Woody and his de facto GM sons). "Complete control" there would be a mirage and Vrabel was smart enough not to take any interest on their behalf seriously.

Quick somebody post Aaron Glenn's sideline dance

This a really nothing story. The Jets were Vrabel’s safety school. I mean he probably didn’t want to wait another year to get a head coaching job. It seemed that Chicago was locked in on Johnson. The Jags was a bad job since ownership sucks and Lawrence isn’t really that good. Jets ownership sucks and they didn’t have a QB, but they had a lot of talent. They were the best of a lot of bad second options.

Yeah, this seems like a fluff piece, nothing article. We were Vrabel's first choice given the presence of a young QB and his history with the team. But nothing is certain. Even though all indications are Kraft wanted Vrabel, it's not an insane scenario to think maybe he got "cold feet" on hiring another coach with dynasty era ties and Ben Johnson wowed him and he was like you know what, maybe we need a clean break from the past. Vrabel has to cover his bases and even though Jets didn't have a QB, they did have a lot of other pieces. There was potential for a coach to get that team in a spot where maybe the next QB who is available via trade is willing to go there, like Stafford to LA for the golden example.

This article isn't trying to portray like Vrabel viewed NY as any more than a fall back plan if NE didn't work out.

Is this the new "I resign as HC of the NYJ" story the JETS are going to tell themselves for the next 20 years as they wonder what if? They were Vrabel's backup choice.

Vrabel was using the Jets to force Kraft's hand.

...and Kraft is an idiot for saying that. IIRC it kinda worked out pretty well until it didn't.

At the end of the day, the buck stops with Vrabes which is what we all want.

Pats had: a franchise QB, the #4 place in the draft, a ton of cap space and a personal relationship with Vrabel.

Vrabel would needed to have loathed Kraft (and there is zero evidence he did) for him to seriously have considered the Jete offer

Agreed

Vrable is a lot like BB, but also different.

Agreed, but he hadn't received the Pats offer yet. So he was probably both pushing Kraft to make a decision and covering his ass in case the Pats went with someone else.

The correlation I like is what Bru told him when he interviewed Vrabes.....hes more like Parcells than BB.

Likely to get Cowdens foot in the door.

Seems that all 4 are on the same sheet of music thus far. I do wish that the Pats had added a RB prior to the trade deadline.

The Jete will always remember the time they almost caught Captain Mike Vrabel.

I doubt he would have chosen the Jets over a different franchise.
Similar to BB I think Vrabel has had enough of bad owners. I'm not saying the Krafts are perfect - and I suspect Jonathan is an absolute twat based on a number of rumors - but Vrabel's unequivocal comments about not having his name in the same sentence as Strunk's are really telling.

I feel like guys take their first coaching job thinking that they can outcoach the bad their owner brings to the table and keep the owner happy with wins.

Second time around, if they're so lucky, I think those same coaches often have learned that a second stint with a bad owner undermining you is almost certainly going to be the end of your career.

Did you guys hear this?

I watched that segment also. As long as the Patriots job was available and it was offered to him there was no way on earth Vrabel was taking ANY other job. It's been said that he and his family absolutely loved living in Massachusetts (Easton) and have longed to return to the area. He had nothing but fond memories of the area and his time with the team. It's all destiny and happening the way it was meant to happen.
