Something happened
Could have been wink wink nod nod of losing today to assure the #1 pick
Or Mayo saying something smug to Kraft after the game
The letter was already drafted.
But I think Kraft out of respect would have waited till Monday or even Tuesday
The immediate firing smells like something went afoul
I think the fan base was mad after losing the first pick, and this was the plan if that happened. This wasn't knee jerk. If they lost, they could have waited until Monday.

My question about Ben Johnson: everyone is high on him because of what he's done as Detroit's OC, but what suggests he can run an entire program? Just four seasons ago he was a position coach. I think at this point it needs to be someone with proven HC experience who can do a lot of heavy lifting.
Show me who has prior experience that proves they can run an entire program successfully and is available.

Definitely a fair question, and I think getting someone with experience is even more important now after the Mayo debacle to "right the ship". But having said that, Johnson has been a hot candidate for at least a couple years and I am guessing he has most likely been writing up plans and concepts for what he will do once he eventually takes a position. He's not just a young upstart neophyte/1 year wonder.
I agree. I think this a job for a HC with significant experience, a guy who has a lot of friends who also have significant and relevant experience as football coaches.

Sanders has already slipped to 20s on some draft boards. Cam Ward is only qb possibly worth a top 3 pick
Not like last year though
On boards where people aren't interested in QB's yes. The Titans and Giants absolutely NEED to leave with a QB. If Sanders for whatever reason slips past them, he'll go at 7 with the Raiders.

We wouldnt of got a haul for 1 maybe an extra first and a third.
No Mayes, Daniel’s, Or Nixes in this draft.
Travis Hunter would have been nice to have as an option but he is gone now.

I agree with this, and I think he has been waiting for the right situation. What is needed is a coach who can not only assemble a staff, but can keep up high level coaching when his assistants get poached to other teams. Thats a very, very underrated ability and even Bill wasn't immune from it.

I'd take a look at everyone including Johnson. No reason not to, but you may not get access to him for at least a month.
I am guessing BJ has also been putting together guys who would "be on his staff" once he takes a job. He also lets you become relatively immune to OC poaching since he IS the system. Most likely he'd just let his DC mostly run that side with some level of oversight by him.

He definitely deserves some special consideration since he was also from North Carolina and was a UNC QB like Drake Maye, and his first coaching jobs were at Boston College for 3 years (2009-2011).

Not hindsight at all. McConkey was mocked in the 1st round. Polk had 3rd round grades. Wallace was considered a 6th or 7th rounder. I can link to my December and January posts on Polk.
Yes take a look at draft day discussion on this board when pats pick at 34 was on the clock

How is the Rooney Rule even legal? It's basically the racist rule. Forcing a business to interview people with certain skin colors. It's a shame what this nation has become. And what the woke NFL leadership has become. Interview the best candidates period!

MLK said something about judging a man by his character and not by the color of his skin. Maybe we should go back to that. And get rid of the racist garbage of the Rooney Rule. But good luck with that as long as Goodell is in charge.

Are you on the Vrabel train?

Why would Johnson want to come to NE ? I know Drake is promising, but the Krafts are weirdos, the stadium is getting older, the cupboard is bare, and the GM makes poor decisions.
You are right. It will take a lot of convincing from the Krafts. The best candidates (if any will even come) will be interviewing them.

On balance the Krafts = good ownership. The stadium isn't old, why would that be a problem anyway? The GM situation likely is in flux, they have a high draft slot and $100 million in cap space. It remains a rebuild situation but has lots to recommend a newcomer with energy to take on a challenge.

I’d be fine with McDaniels returning but my first choice for OC would be Daboll, if he is fired by the Giants. Vrabel played for the Pats from 2001-2008, so he should know Daboll well. Interesting that he was a defensive assistant for Vrabel’s first year with the Pats.
I would be in on Daboll
He is suppose to be good with QB development
A.though that could not be said with Daniel Jones
But Jones had limited talent
