Jason Whitlock: Make Offensive Holding legal.

BTW, the easiest solution is to just call every hold, essentially requiring OL to block with a closed fist. That won't work, either, but it's the easiest working solution, and it would finally be a rule to benefit the defense instead of the offense.

Or, we can just relax, and enjoy *****ing about holding calls every game, as we currently do.

If holding is made legal, I'm going pro. I'm past playing age, and I haven't been in football shape for over a decade, but I could be a shut down LT, if they'd let me hold on every play.

Then again, pretty much anyone who weighs more than 200 pounds could be a shutdown LT, if they were allowed to hold on every play.

Ok I'm asking this because I've never competed at a high level and wouldn't know but if I compared it to wrestling it would still require technique to stop a guy from getting through the line. A 200 pound guy is not going to stop a 300 pound guy from bull rushing him etc... although I understand or assume that you used that example to illustrate the overwhelming advantage the O lineman would have . But would it be that overwhelming?

I also assume we are just talking about holding and not tackling.

I think this could help some mediocre QB's succeed.

My athletic playing weight was comfortably more than just 200 lbs, so it'd be easier for me, and I wouldn't have to be as extreme in my moves as a smaller player. But, since the idea is just to give the QB his 3-4 seconds, a 200 pound man would just have to grab his opponent and go to the ground. It's an easy technique. Anyone here with judo training should be able to verify that for you.

Good stuff Deus.

My initial response: That would be tackling.

But I get it. 5 years from now I would create a thread about getting rid of the Offensive tackling rule.

So it would be trading something for something I guess.

Back in the day, offensive linemen blocked with their shoulders. We've come a long way.

Without a doubt, defensive pass interference should be a 10 yard penalty.

Down by 5 on the 45 yard line. 3 seconds left. Brady drops back, Chris Hogan is sprinting down the sideline and has beaten Talib. Brady hauls back and throws the perfect pass. TJ Ward just tackles Hogan because he knows that's his only shot. Ball falls incomplete, flag is thrown. Patriots get the ball at the 35 and get another play. Brady drops back and gets sacked by Von Miller.

Yeah that's what we need. Another ridiculous boost to offenses.

Make both offensive and defensive holding legal, that is the best solution

The reality is that many offensive linemen are getting away with quite blatant holding anyway. It is just unpredictable who gets called and when. At least if holding is legal the defensive linemen will know what to expect.

Holding's actually a fairly straightforward call.

Holding inside the frame, without taking a guy to the ground, and not when you've been beaten = legal
Holding outside the frame, as part of taking a guy to the ground, or after you've already been beaten = penalty

It's mostly the times where it's a bit of both that cause problems.*

*along with every single play that doesn't go the way one side or the other wanted it to

It may be a straightforward rule but the enforcement is THE most inconsistent out of all the rules to the point that it could probably be called on someone on almost every play. So either they have to actually start enforcing it uniformly or drop the rule entirely. Ontherwise they just turn a game of skill into a game of chance.

No they can't. But I would love to see you in training camp against Chris Long and Jaabal Sheard. I would make the long drive from Philly just to see you.

While we're at it, we should just take defenses off the field altogether.

That would reduce Fitzpatrick's interception rate by roughly 10%. And the Jets might break 30 at some point in the season.

Maybe change the point of emphasis, but eliminating OL holding call is absolutely bananas. If a guy gets beat all he has to do is grab the guys jersey from the back and it will give the qb plenty of time to get rid of it.

Completely agree. It's like the face mask rule (Hey, let's get rid of that too!). It's an easy call, either you did or you didn't grab it. Either your hands are inside and to the front of the opposing player, or they're not, but the league has made these rules unnecessarily broad and vague to (in their minds) address some unenforceable end state.

So now referees have to make decisions usually based on "the intent" of the player (yeah, because mind reading is a skill so many of us human possess) instead of the action; meaning any play can be called for any infraction, any time.

Credibility enhancement...that's what this is!!!!

Get rid of both lines and have a 3 Mississippi rule counted out over the PA system by Herr Goodell....the Full 32's face of the NFL
Fans are begging for more Roger
