James Sanders: How do you rate him?

Some funny thing about this thread is he is never going to be beaten by merriweather as meriweather 200 LB speed FS type and sanders is 220LB strong safety. They have different responsoblity. Ed reed is also a FS .SOmetimes depending on match up they might play FS /SS but the responsiblity is different. Merriweather like Ed is going to be asked to give more coverage support as FS are lighter /smaller/faster and Strong safeties like harrison/sanders/tank will be play in run support, blitzing and TE coverage at the LOS.

how can both positions got merged i have no idea. when harrison went down sanders had held his own. i would like to see a true safety combo of sanders and merriweather together. :rocker:...when we say we need more speed in the back field you guys forget we never had a merriweather type player to be used as free safety before. When he is in you need a strong safety in for mass against the running game.

He will technically end up being beaten out by Meriweather because Sanders has spent a lot of time recently playing the free.

Yes but sanders is slow for a free safety. How many times especially against the chargers we have sanders stopping LT when he comes into the back field.A think you need to have if rb get into the back field .I think instead of playing him being a slow FS , we would be better off using a faster FS who can learn and be more effective.
NO knock on sanders as he has been good and makes a very effective free safety with him rolled over to weaker of the 2 WR in cover 2.

Right, thats why Meriweather will end up beating him out for the Free Safety Job - Meriweather is the prototypical rangy, center-field type Free Safety. Sanders did a solid job playing the FS role last year, but he's much more suitable to be Rodney's replacement at SS eventually.
