James Harrison officially signs with Pats

I think that even though the first playoff game is 3 weeks away on some level we are now in a race against time for MP/BB to actually get to know James Harrison the football player.

Yes, we have many years of gametape but having him on the practice field for a week will give you more insight than those game tapes ever could. (Which is why the joint practices in pre-season are so interesting with respect to trades or signing players).

Once they know what he still can and can't do, which schemes/calls he understands and which he doesnt ect. I am very confident they will find a great place for him situationally.

However, they have essentially this week to do most of that because there is no real practice during BYE weeks and then the gameplan for the first playoff game has to already be formulated.

If we do see the Steelers in the AFCC, my instinct is that Harrison's contribution won't be quite in the way of his knowledge of the playbook on both sides of his former team, but far more importantly, their tendencies in certain situation- their instincts. At this point in time, from hundreds of practices against Ben R., Harrison has developed the intuition, the instinct of what is likely to happen in certain situations, and what Ben R.'s tendency is going to be on such and such down and distance and against this or that defense scheme, and he'll just communicate that to the rest of the defense.

And that's all we need from him: a handful of downs that can change a game.

I think the better question is: is Harrison an upgrade over whoever will now be inactive?

I don’t see the team roster being the catch w this move but the active game day roster...so who do we deactivate? (Trevor was not active)

Last week's inactives:

Branch (knee)
Burkead (knee)
Hogan (shoulder)
White (ankle)
Van Noy (calf)
Reilly (HEALTHY)
Croston (HEALTHY)

I'd think that Harris (who got no snaps v BUF, despite being active) replaces Reilly.

If Van Noy is active, I'd guess that Grissom takes his spot, unless either King or Slater needs extra rest for their hamstring injuries.

Jesus this is just a recipe for the clown triumvirate of Tomlin/Haley/Ben to overthink things and switching them up just so they can fool Harrison and the Pats.

This will be glorious..

Assuming KVN and Uncle Phil are functional and Trey stays on the field all 3 downs, I think it's a real possibility Harrison sees 30-35 snaps in the Divisionals.

Entirely possible. Like I said when the entire sign/dont sign conversation started upon his release; I am stepping away from predictions on this one, lean back and see what BB has in store.

I'm on record as saying he's got nothing left. Since BB has made me always look like an idiot I'm confident he'll have a significant role in 3 weeks.

I have nowhere to go but up!

Putting aside my reservations about James Harrison, the man ... anyone who thinks he can't beast for four games' worth of situational pass rushing after only playing 40 snaps this year is freakin' crazy.

This is what the rational ones are saying on Steelerfury.

They say it's not like Harrison sucked last year or sucked when he played this year. He was a productive pass rusher and was ok vs the run. They aren't buying the reason for his lack of playing time was only because he couldn't drop into coverage and there was something else going on.

Exactly, He wants to show the world he can still play at a pretty high level and isn't going to take the Steelers benching him. He could have gone about anywhere but would have floundered with teams that aren't in the playoffs.

Shannon Sharpe just asked BB to pick him up on undisputed, he'll come help get him another ring.

If he can play one game like he did against the Chiefs, I will take it!

15 snaps, 3 tackles, 1 sack and 1 tackle for a loss. Not bad.

Did you happen to see any of the footage of him working with the young guys in Pitt, this year? It may have been on local coverage here, but he pretty much coached them on his own...it was pretty impressive, especially seeing as those guys were replacing him. Guy has football IQ no doubt. And his work ethic is off the charts.
Thanks for letting me know about this. Did not know that was happening. Makes me even happier we got him.
