Why would you want Dalton over Stidham?

Dalton is a known commodity that has years of NFL experience. For better and worse you know exactly what you get. If a team -- hopefully not NE -- think they can coach around his weaknesses then he could make for a decent placeholder.

In other words, given everything we know so far Daltons floor is higher than Stidham's. Of course we are in March and that opinion might look different around the end of camp if Stidham develops as many hope.

The guy isn't Ricky Vaughn where getting his vision corrected suddenly cures all ills. This is real life, not a movie.

If Stidham beats out Dalton in preseason (or Winston or Cam) that would be great. In 2021, we would eat the dead money and future guarantees. The 2020 cap money of about $6M would be fine for a veteran backup.
