Jakob Johnson: Patriots to stop using fullback

So the question this year is two-fold: Who is the primarily play designer for the offense in 2022, and what does this person think the role of the FB should be? In a way, this might be evidence that Nick Caley is taking a bigger role in the offense. His background being in TE's, he will likely look to emphasize them a little more in his designs.
Well, if we believe what Jakob said we are going back to the BOB days and that means no FB on any level.

Not sure who the play caller will be.

Whatever meds you're on, you need to change the prescription... You're losing your vision, and your objectivity.
You never had any.

Aaron Hernadez was the FB, Gronk got back there as well, when they wanted to beef up they used a 6th offensive lineman.

If we took titles and numbers away from players, how would anyone know the difference?

I think Nick Caley will probably end up being the guy, hopefully he has some fresh ideas because it had grown pretty stale. But Jonnu playing more snaps and being utilized as an H-Back is only a good thing.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but Joe Judge on the Giants did use fullbacks. Elijhaa Penny is a fullback. I also see that Connor Gillespie is a fullback and was on the Giants roster, but he was used almost exclusively as a special teams specialist.

It’s also interesting, and again correct me if I’m wrong, but Patricia also used fullbacks in Detroit.

AH was a not a traditional FB nor was Gronk in the sense they were lead battering rams for multiple plays during the game.

No idea. Maybe BB decided he didn't want the traditional FB.

What’s a traditional FB look like?

Hernandez served as the team’s FB when they wanted to use power formations… his position name was irrelevant.

I’d say many if not most of the Pats TE’s can do the job well and will be bigger threats with the ball in their hands than Jakob or even Develin… they’re simply better athletes.

Ones that don't run/catch the football often and are not a significant part of the passing offense.

AH was not lining up in the backfield slamming into tackles, guards and LBs 25 times a game.

Jakob and Develin were traditional fullbacks because of their role and plays they ran and the frequency in which they did.

AH did not come close to that.

Players like Mike Alstott, Larry Centers and Keith Byers might blanche at your definition.

When he wasn’t doing that he and Gronk were going in motion and wham blocking the very same guards… but he was lining up at FB fairly regularly.

They weren’t good athletes, they were strong, but limited.

Hernandez retired early.

Seems you don't believe in the function of an H-back either let alone the traditional blocking FB.

Moving on. No need to discuss further.

I really liked Alstott and Centers. Juszczyk is probably the closest to a receiving fullback in this league and he only caught 30 passes last year. Patrick Pass caught 28 passes while serving as the fullback to Corey Dillon.

Perhaps N'keal could be a fullback!

I hope they don't telegraph runs with a FB this year. I'd rather they use the roster spot on something else. However I do want them to use Keene and / or Smith (or even a swing tackle) to line up there 5ish times a game. They don't have to have the position title to play the position. Can Dugger play LB even though he is a Safety ? Sure.

Speaking of traditional fback/hback duties, I wonder what we'd call Patrick Ricard when he was playing both defensive line and fullback

Seems like a player that BB would've loved to have found. Versatile at the least.

Absolutely.

Remember Dan Klecko? He ran the ball and caught a couple of passes as a FB. Played DT on passing downs a few games.

Maybe this is the year we see Dalton Keene hit the field? I thought he was supposed to be that TE/FB hybrid who could catch and block.
Is he even a real person?

Ricard played for us at UMaine, he was actually a college DL. Was surprised he ended up a fullback.

I say good riddance to the FB. If the Patriots are going to compete with the better teams in the AFC (of which there are many at this point) then they will need to be more dynamic and explosive. Their running game with Harris and Stevenson will be strong enough either way but their passing game needs to improve significantly. Mac Jones needs to be a 4500-ish-yards passer with 30-34 TDs and low turnovers if this team is going to succeed anytime in the near future. Bill hasn't signed any of the premiere FA WRs for Jones so I for one am hoping pick #21 is a future #1 stud receiver.

I'm not into the Dalton Keene idea either.
