Hype? Mincey? Where are you reading hype about Mincey?

There were a ton of articles of Belichick personally working with this kid and liking him alot. Even at the time we started to look into him we saw that if it wasn't for his height he can turn into the McGinest position (elephant) if not this year than next. He is very capable of playing at McGinests level with his large body and speed.

He was hyped up alot on these boards and others.

Besides i forgot that he becomes a RFA after the third year anyway.

Top 15 picks can sign for up to 6 years. The rest of the first round can sign for up to 5 years. 2nd round and later can sign for up to 4 years. New CBA.

Those restrictions seem unnecessary to me. Did the agents lobby for them?

I'm sure it was a way to allow players to get to free agency faster unless you get a big signing bonus which goes mostly to first rounders, especially high first rounders.

I already wrote about this in the other thread posted about Borges's take on Branch, but what happened in the CBA negotiations is that Tom Condon got himself highly involved as Gene Upshaw's 'advisor', and they implemented a series of so called 'Patriots Clauses', all of which are designed to limit how long a team can sign their untrained, unproven rookie employees. So now you can only sign a 2nd round pick to 4 years, Maximum.

Another article you will read in that thread describes Gene Upshaw's poisonous comments about the Pats. No doubt repeating what he had heard from Condon, his trusted 'advisor'.

This is a deliberate power play created by Tom Condon, the 'Super agent' who wouldn't allow Ben Watson to sign a 6 year deal with the Pats, even though Watson wanted to. So Watson had to change agents.

A "ton" of articles seems to be a mild exaggeration - yes, there were a number of articles reporting BB worked out Mincey - they all came out at the same time courtesy of a press release or brief forays into Lexis-Nexis by less energetic reporters. Many of those articles also noted he worked out Jackson and Brown and Herring and Hand, too.

My perspective regarding the posts on this forum: speculation, centered around the question of Mincey's ability to replace Willie MacGinest. Very few people have "hyped" him as being a sure thing. There has been a lot of hope because BB personally checked him out, then drafted him, but that hope has been tempered by the knowledge that Mincey is a 6th round draft pick.

I can't speak to what you may have read on other boards, but my definition of "hype" doesn't relate to fan commentary so much as it relates to pre-draft media coverage where Mincey was almost a non-entity in the Bush, Super Mario, Leinart melodrama sweepstakes. Before NE drafted him, we draftniks were digging deep to find anything about Jeremy Mincey, my thanks to Murphy, but local post-draft articles, such as the one posted, have been few and far between compared to Maroney and Jackson.

Thanks for responding, I now have a better understanding of how you are defining hype, we'll just have to agree to disagree as to what constitutes "hype" in this context.

IMO, Mincey's two year stats as a full time pass rusher and starter where really unimpressive. I wasn't there, but based on stats, this guy is a risky proposition to replace anybody on the Pats!

I'm sure Belichick liked him for some reason, be it run-stuffing or good motor, but it was not for pass rushing. There is a reason he was a 6th round pick, and a reason McGinnest was like the 4th overall pick.

Let's just hope he is good enough to make the active roster, or I.R.

I liked his containment in the Hula Bowl, though he also picked up three sacks in that game. I'm expecting a 2-3 year learning curve like TBC's before we much playing time/production out of him. Either way, I'm happy he will be in camp and learning.

This certainly proves that his agent knows what fans want to hear.

Please someone, correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that after about the top 10 picks, the money is all fairly standard per pick, give or take $100k or so of signing bonus, and the CBA caps the lengths of the contracts and makes them de facto standards.
