According to the NY Daily News, Rex Ryan is bringing a "swagger-licious" attitude to the Jets. He seems to have loose practices than Mangini had and implementing "fun" into practices. Granted we don't know if this attitude is just for minicamps and OTAs or will be brought into training camp, but I see this as a receipt for disaster.

Can you remember a single team that have a swagger and have fun practices that has done anything in the NFL? The Pats have a swagger, but Belichick has a professional disciplined approach to practices. The Chargers have a swagger and despite having arguably the most talented team of the last 5 years have never gotten beyond the AFC Championship game losing to the Pats twice in the playoffs. The Cowboys have the swagger without the discipline since Parcells left and look what that has gotten them too (also a team considered to be one of the most talented teams in the league and they are without a single playoff win).

I know the Jets players love this approach, but I am wondering if as the season goes along that players from their competition will love this approach even more.

Ok, it is slow. Saw the article and figured it might be interesting to debate.

Rex Ryan's Jets are playful in practice

How much of this is PR or a reaction to humorless Mangini's style? BB is not known as Mr Jolly but back in Smithfield where you could get close to the players on the sidelines, Charlie Weis was freakin hilarious in his comments to players during summer camp. These years I see BB chating and occasionally laughing with players during summer camp workouts from afar although I can't hear what's said anymore.

We've all seen Bill ribbing Mayo about his trucks and that sort of thing.

I think Bill has perfected the art of approachability while maintaining control of his players. "We can be friends, but make NO mistake about who's in charge."

Rex could get into trouble if he's not taking this division seriously.

For a relatively noveau fan, you're spot on on your BB observation. He's a very interesting management case study. A guy who certainly changed profoundly from his earlier player relations, yet has as you said maintained the all important in charge persona.

Actually, Belichick typically isn't all that friendly with players on the practice field. He is human so there are times when he jokes around with players (he always has the fattest guy on the team fielding punts for an afternoon off at least once a training camp), but typically he is all business on the practice field. Brady has been quoted that if you want a friendly head coach, don't come to the Patriots; but if you want to win, come here.

I think Belichick's approach is "We are here to win a championship and we need to get down to the business of preparing for that, but we can have some fun every once in a while". I don't think Belichick is concerned about making any friends with his players though.

i think he is doing it his way...and they will have a very good team this season.

With winning comes swagger. Can the NYJ still have swagger if they haven't won anything?

I don't think we can make any predictions based on their swagger. We will see if it works or not.

His way may end up being the best way for his team, but I think they will have an average team this season at best. They have no offense (no QB, no WRs, an overrated o-line, a lead back who will be 31 at the start of the season and no by committee approach). Their defense is overrated and was average last year.

Ryan could turn the Jets around, but I think they will take a big step back this season. I'm thinking 7-8 wins would be a good season for them based on everything we know right now.

what a meathead. starting to remind me of that other meathead in jacksonville, del rio.

Maybe they can swagger their way to 7 wins this year, but I doubt it.

I predicted this weeks ago; what Tubby Wrecks is doing to the Green Beans is obvious to me. They will be stupid, physical, dirty and undisciplined. Their defense will be good (not great) and they won't score touchdowns on offense. Their record will be 6-10. Fans will boo.

Sounds like the Ravens under Billick, which is who Ryan spent most of his coaching career......

Anyone remember the Ravens Pats Monday night game in 2007. Who called time out, what element of the Ravens melted down?

I was there. In fact, my seats were on the goal line at the end zone where it all happened. The Ravens played really hard but lost their cool under pressure. I remember when they were flagged and one of them picked up the flag and threw it into the stands. No way the Green Beans become winners with Tubby Wrecks in charge. He's the second coming of Abe Gibron.

Players can have all the fun they want off the field with the millions of $$$ they make. Having fun on the practice field should be a remote second to honing their craft. I'm glad to see Tubby Wrecks make it a priority, because it definitely won't translate to disciplined performance on game day. Hard work is hard work. You can enjoy your work, but emphasizing "fun" misses the point.

"We're swagger-licious"

There's absolutely no comparison between this style and that of BB imho but given the Jets own situation Ryan may be right in trying to adjust their lockeroom culture. How bad was Mangini? We've heard and read various comments and stories but the stiltedness may have been worse than we know.

Mangini always seemed uncomfortable beyond just serious and business-like; even sorta weird given his penchant for naming his children after players NO personality,NONE. That worked ok here because he wasn't the one in charge. BB,Weiss,RAC could diffuse some of Mangini's uptightness but when he became HC, he set the tone and obviously it sounds like it was ugly.
"When people from your neighborhood go into somebody else's neighborhood, you don't go in there quietly," Scott said. "You go kicking and screaming. It's like, 'We're here, what's up?'

I can't wait

Re: OT: Is Rex Ryan giving his team a Super Bowl swagger or making them unfocused?

I'd be careful in blasting Ryan too early. He fielded a good defense virtually every year he was at Baltimore. It will be interesting to see if that squad's leadership came down from the top in Ryan, or from within via Ray Lewis. Either way, Rex certainly can find defensive talent. I see the Jets D getting better and their offense being the worst in recent memory. They have no wide receivers, and no NFL-ready starter is available through the draft besides Crabtree. Not to mention that all of their quarterbacks suck.

From what I've heard, Ryan is pretty old school. This article raises questions about that. However, if the players like him then he is already an upgrade over Mangini--who probably can't even relate to his dog, much less another human being.

Apparently Rex is giving his team an off-season stagger rather than a Super Bowl swagger with the way he is running practices.
Hopefully both players are okay.

Horrific collision at mini-camp

I have been covering the Jets for over 10 years, and this is the worst collision I have ever seen in a practice.

The field was split in half. There were two different drills running at the same time. Wright was running a deep route in one direction and Cummings was covering RB Jehuu Caulcrick going in the other direction. Cummings and Wright were both looking back towards the respective quarterbacks throwing the ball in each drill, and ran into each other full throttle.

The were both down for several minutes. Cummings didn't seem to suffer any particular injury aside from a probable concussion. Wright was woozy and also holding his knee.

if Ryan fails to create a great defense in NY, he wouldn't be the first Raven DC who had a dominant defense in Baltimore who failed to recreate the magic when he went on to become a head coach elsewhere. Marvin Lewis was the DC of the 2000 Ravens which is considered one of the best defenses of all time (if not the best). Cincy has never had a good defense under Lewis. Ryan's dad was the DC of the only defense that many think was better than that 2000 Ravens' defense and he had a decent, but not great record in Philly as a head coach (43-38-1) and a miserable tenure in Arizona (12-20). Also, look closer to home, Romeo Crennel never created a good defense for the Browns after running some great defenses in NE (including the 2003 defense which may be one of the most underrated defenses of all time).

But at least they were having fun. :singing:

Re: OT: Is Rex Ryan giving his team a Super Bowl swagger or making them unfocused?

Here's Belichick chewing out his team after a lackluster performance in 2002 (from Michael Holley's Patriot Reign):

"I've seen a couple of comments here, some of the players talking about we need to get our 'swagger' back .... You know what? We didn't have a 'swagger' last year. If you f***ing think about it, we didn't have a swagger. What we had was a sense of urgency about playing well, about being smart and capitalizing on every opportunity and situation that came our way ...It wasn't about f***ing swagger. You can take that swagger and shove it up your ***, okay"

So much for swagger.

So far, Ryan talks a good game. But swagger and trash talk don't put points on the board or get the other guys off the field on third down.

By the way, the player that totally melted down at the end of the Ravens game was none other than (now a jet) LB Bart Scott.
