Is Rex Ryan giving his team a Super Bowl swagger or making them unfocused?

Re: OT: Is Rex Ryan giving his team a Super Bowl swagger or making them unfocused?

Apparently Rex is giving his team an off-season stagger rather than a Super Bowl swagger with the way he is running practices.
Hopefully both players are okay.

Horrific collision at mini-camp

Swagger Gone Wild.

Seriously I hope they're ok. Remember the controversy awhile back about practices being too violent, practicing in pads when they weren't supposed to,etc? Nobody needs any injuries this soon.ugh.

Re: OT: Is Rex Ryan giving his team a Super Bowl swagger or making them unfocused?

Here's Belichick chewing out his team after a lackluster performance in 2002 (from Michael Holley's Patriot Reign):
"I've seen a couple of comments here, some of the players talking about we need to get our 'swagger' back .... You know what? We didn't have a 'swagger' last year. If you f***ing think about it, we didn't have a swagger. What we had was a sense of urgency about playing well, about being smart and capitalizing on every opportunity and situation that came our way ...It wasn't about f***ing swagger. You can take that swagger and shove it up your ***, okay"
So much for swagger.

So far, Ryan talks a good game. But swagger an trash talk don't put points on the board or get the other guys off the field on third down.

By the way, the player that totally melted down at the end of the Ravens game was no other than (now a jet) LB Bart Scott.

I agree about swagger. In fact, I think the Jets should have more of a sense of urgency this season. They were supposed to win the division after Brady went down and went crazy on adding players. They came in third behind a Brady-less Pats and a Dolphins team that was 1-15 the year before. They are an older team with seven expected starters being 30 or older by the start of the season with potential cap hell on the horizon depending on what happens with the CBA. They should be focused, not walking with a swagger and having fun.

The New York Media likes him because he's a good sound bite they never liked Mangini's tight lipped approach and wouldn't put up with it like the boston media because he wasn't bringing any results like Belichick does. It was the same thing with Nick Saban in Miami.

If Tubby Wrecks is anything like his father as head coach, his team will be mediocre at best.

Re: OT: Is Rex Ryan giving his team a Super Bowl swagger or making them unfocused?

According to the NY Daily News, Rex Ryan is bringing a "swagger-licious" attitude to the Jets. He seems to have loose practices than Mangini had and implementing "fun" into practices. Granted we don't know if this attitude is just for minicamps and OTAs or will be brought into training camp, but I see this as a receipt for disaster.

Can you remember a single team that have a swagger and have fun practices that has done anything in the NFL? The Pats have a swagger, but Belichick has a professional disciplined approach to practices. The Chargers have a swagger and despite having arguably the most talented team of the last 5 years have never gotten beyond the AFC Championship game losing to the Pats twice in the playoffs. The Cowboys have the swagger without the discipline since Parcells left and look what that has gotten them too (also a team considered to be one of the most talented teams in the league and they are without a single playoff win).

I know the Jets players love this approach, but I am wondering if as the season goes along that players from their competition will love this approach even more.

Ok, it is slow. Saw the article and figured it might be interesting to debate.

Rex Ryan's Jets are playful in practice

That's cute.

"swagger-licious", uh huh.

Who's their Quarterback?

Great quote! I agree with ScottieC in his post on this one too. I wonder if swagger will help whomever the poor sap is at QB to start the season.

Amen. I've lived in Philly since '85 so I got to see Buddy Ryan and how he ran a team and the son is following the playbook. They had a very good, excellent defense that physically beat people up but the offense was left to suffer. When it came time to play smart, not just physical football as in the playoffs, they couldn't adjust and he never won a playoff game in Philly despite enormous talent, Reggie White, Jerome Brown,. Clyde Simmons et al.
They had bounties and body bags but never won when it counted....

Re: OT: Is Rex Ryan giving his team a Super Bowl swagger or making them unfocused?

I'd be careful in blasting Ryan too early. He fielded a good defense virtually every year he was at Baltimore. It will be interesting to see if that squad's leadership came down from the top in Ryan, or from within via Ray Lewis.

I can answer this. As a Steelers fan. The Ravens Defense was good because of Ray Lewis.

I was watching the dvds from this previous season, and in one of the games Steelers vs Ravens, pretty sure it was the last regular season game, not the Playoff game, Lewis is right in Ryan's mug on the sideline, "Listen to me, Everytime you take your best player out of the middle, they go to the Middle, that's what the Steelers do! I've been playing them for 13 years and I know, if you pull the best player out of the middle, they are going to attack the middle!" Pretty sure he was talking about pulling Reed out of the middle at safety and having him in a double team on Holmes on a sideline route.

Ray was and is the Leader of that Ravens defense. Having to play a Ray Lewis on defense is what I get up for 2 times a year not the coach. Ray runs that defense.

It sounds like Ryan wants his team to be a bunch of head cases. It sounds like all they want to do is put people in hospital. I can't wait for the Pats to smack them around in week 2.
