In reading through the comments on a scientific website that was referenced a little earlier this week (and which I can't seem to find now), I was intrigued to read how little a temperature change that, using the worst assumptions, would allow for the 11 footballs to have averaged above 11.32 PSI. The actual average using worst case assumptions was 11.11 PSI. That temperature change needed to get the 11.32 PSI reading down below 11.11 is 5 degrees.

In other words, the supposed deflation of footballs was so minimal that it's impact is equivalent to playing in temperatures 5 degrees colder. And yet football games are played in wildly varying conditions all the time.

So, does varying football pressure impact the integrity of the game? Or does it not? The NFL seems to be saying that what corresponds to a 5 degree temperature difference impacts the integrity of the game in an incredibly major way based on their penalties.

I just thought that this was worth pointing out. If someone better versed in science can verify what I read (and even include a link to the comments I can no longer find), that would be great and I will update as needed.
 
Nfl should see the effect of weather very soon. Many of the games in preseason will have balls exposed to Very hot weather that will likely effect psi.

It will be the opposite effect of cold weather, but I imagine psi will go up
 
The Refs are ultimately responsible for checking the PSI during the game and making adjustments when necessary. The lack of knowledge by Goodell, Vincent and the Refs of the Ideal Gas Law impacts the integrity of the game.
 
It's the difference of the balls being set in a warm locker room filled with people and hot showers running. It's the difference of testing them in a room closer to an AC than not. It's the difference from the start of a game to the end in most games as most outdoor games will experience an air temp fluctation of that amount or more.

It's nothing. Except most people are ignorant of this because they are dumb and the media sucks.

this is pretty accurate --- I couldn't really say exactly what 5 degrees is equivalent to in psi, but you're in the ballpark.
the change in psi everybody's spewing about is just a few degrees in temp change.

so, what we're saying is brady's touch is so sensitive that 13 is not quite right, 12.5 is not quite right, the magic number he needs to be effective actually happens to be 12.2, unfortunastely, so to get there we have to assign some dude to let 3/10ths of a psi out of all the balls in a bathroom stall in one minute.
then the balls go outside and lose another 1.5 psi, but nobody notices.
and this has been a national story for the last 6 months, with anybody doubting it being shouted down as delusional.

Yes that is about right. It is about 0.05 psi per degree. 5 degrees would be about .26 psi.


In the released appeal transcripts you can see how stupid this whole scandal is.

They admit that IF the Patriots footballs had been measured, at halftime, within 2-4 minutes of getting into the warmer locker room they would have been able to conclude that the deflation was due to natural causes.

The inflation rate of those footballs after getting into the warmer locker room was approximately 0.1 psi per minute for the first few minutes. (According the charts within the Well's report.) That is the equivalent of 0.3 psi.
