ILB Adam Seward [merged - old 2008 thread]

Re: WAAF: Pats will give Seward offer sheet

And I thought there was some REAL news on him....that is OK

Re: ILB Adam Seward (Merged)

Not a big fan of this merge.....Merging two huge old threads together now makes it even tougher to weed thru these threads. Once something actually happens on the Seward front people are going to want to comment on what others said as the situation was unfolding.

Re: ILB Adam Seward (Merged)

Odd for BB to even comment on something like that, I was expecting an even more generic and vague answer than "no comment."

I'm guessing that there's just not much incentive to move sooner rather than later. If by chance the Panthers happen to sign another player or two, they're left with even less cap room to try and match whatever offer the Pats give Seward.

Re: ILB Adam Seward (Merged)

Belichick also noted "it's possible" that the team could still sign restricted free agent Adam Seward to an offer sheet

Oh Yeah! Now we're talkin!

Re: ILB Adam Seward [merged]

Does this mean he's not visiting tomorrow anymore?

Re: ILB Adam Seward [merged]

From Herald:

And here’s what Panthers coach John Fox had to say when asked if it was strange to have restricted free agent linebacker Adam Seward participating in Carolina’s offseason program while the possibility exists that he’ll sign an offer sheet with the Patriots:

“It happens every year. I’m not saying with Adam Seward, but with other players. (Raiders corner) Chris Carr is a guy who was a restricted free agent who has done some visits. He might even have signed. Tennessee put an offer sheet in. If you’re a restricted free agent and you’ve made visits, that’s how it goes.

“We like Adam. Otherwise he wouldn’t be on our team. He’s competitive. He has stepped in and played on defense, not just special teams, but (special teams) is an important role.”

Fox added that the reason Seward hasn’t played more on defense is, “because of the players in front of him.”

Thanks for the small tidbit.

I think we throw that offer sheet in on the deadline and see if the Panthers bite and sign the guy too or they forget about him and focus on the draft.

I think that is more probable than not...I also think since they have been talking about him that there are other things brewing on the LB front...so that he's an option DEPENDING on other things..Spikes, Hobson....who knows..but I feel more and more like they will get that sheet to Carolina..

We still have two glaring holes at LB. OLB and ILB. Vrabel and Thomas with Tedy coming in for several plays are our LB's as of right now.

We need a young guy in the middle and presumably a speed rusher on the outside.

If we plugged in Seward in the middle and took a Gholston, Groves or Long for the outside you drastically reduce the age of your LB's and add some speed and youth into it.

Still not counting the fact that Seau might still come back or any extra depth we may or may not have from lower round drafting players. The Crable's, Goff's and Avril's of the draft.

Re: ILB Adam Seward [merged]

I've seen it opined that the Pats might be looking at him as a draft day chip in a swap of firsts with Carolina if they have their eye/heart set on a player they don't think they can get at #13. It would negate all the poison pill and long term contract implications giving the Pats a little time to evaluate him in this system before committing to a long term deal. Not a risk worth taking if you are dead sure he'll hunt, since no trade scenario is guaranteed, but if your just intrigued...might just be a back burner scenario you kicked his tires to establish.

Re: ILB Adam Seward [merged]

This was posted on DraftDaddy.com's draft blog (4/01/08):
Patriots coach Bill Belichick is leaving open the possibility of signing Panthers restricted free agent linebacker Adam Seward to an offer sheet.

DD.comment: As we recall, Seward was an extremely fierce and productive linebacker at U.N.L.V. and displayed some excellent athletic ability in the spring of 2005 at the Combine -- Ran a 4.56 on the then "slower track" in Indy at 248 pounds and did 33 reps. We think the Patriots would be wise to sign Seward to an offer sheet, if team doctors give it the okay (Seward has had nagging right foot problems, which affected his draft status and playing time in Carolina), because history shows only like 20% of 5th rounders become N.F.L. starters anyway. With that in mind, why not take a chance on an established backup and special teams contributor who is only 25 years old and may thrive in a new system?
They didn't provide a link though...
