Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

Let me understand this.

The Panthers know about the Patriots' interest in Seward. And they will then put themselves in a position where they could not match the Patriots' offer. IMO, that is a very optimistic take.

Pardon my ignorance, RC, but...what is that eyeless girl, with her equally creepy eyeless dog, trying to tell me?

And Miguel is right: the NEP will probably be in no better position to sign Seward away from the Panthers on April 18th than they will be on March 18th.

ha ha ha ha...."The sun'll come out tomorrow...." Take on the overt optimism. But I'd still take it over the "Nabobs of Negativity."

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

The release of Hartwig gives Carolina an extra $2.1 million to play with.

Cant they sign some overpriced WR so the opposition doesnt triple cover Steve Smith and therefore give us a better shot at Seward?

I agree that waiting isn't because they want to make it harder on the Panthers to match, but if the Pats really wanted to make it hard to match they just have to include certain clauses that make it very difficult to match like Minnesota did with the Steve Hutchinson contract.

Really, if an NFL team wants any restricted FA they just have to include such clauses.

Personally, I see it more likely they don't want to pay him more than he is worth. They can like him, but he still has to agree to sign an offer sheet. They probably disagree on what that offer should be.

Every team is weighing between the cap, FA's avail now, the potential of the draft, and the FA's they expect will be cut. The longer they wait, they more likely something will come up that changes the picture (a player being cut) and the more likely they will lose a FA who is out there visiting teams.

If the Pats go after Seward now, it shows their hand and forces other teams considering him to come forward. If they wait, the other teams may have already made a commitment to another FA LB, or to another player who consumes cap space. OTOH, if they make an offer now, it gives them an answer on whether they'll have Seward, so they can decide whether they need to go after someone else.

It depends on the other FA LBs they have on their radar and what they think other teams will do. It's not a zero-sum game, but when there are only a few LBs with certain skills and a lot of teams with needs, I imagine it gets pretty tactical. Some coaches are a bit more Machiavellian than others. I'd put Mangini and Belichick pretty high on that list.

While they may simply not want to make an offer, I wouldn't be surprised if they're lining up their Tarot cards and playing the odds.

Or, as former Red Sox GM Lou "What would we do with Willie McGee?" Gorman has said: "The sun will rise, the sun will set, and tomorrow I'll have lunch."

There just aren't enough S. Ted Agnew quotes in sports today.

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE: Panthers backup middle linebacker Adam Seward, a restricted free agent, visited New England a week ago. But his agent said Wednesday he still hasn't heard anything from the Patriots.

"There's no new news," Michael Hoffman said. "I'll just defer all comments to the Patriots, though the visit went well and we remain optimistic."

If the Patriots signed Seward to an offer sheet and the Panthers chose not to match, Carolina would get a fifth-round pick as compensation. The Panthers probably wouldn't mind keeping Seward, if he didn't get an offer, though they gave themselves ample cover last week by signing Landon Johnson from Cincinnati. Johnson's here to compete for the starting weakside job, but has played the middle before and would likely be the best bet to move there if anything happened to Jon Beason.

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

Interesting....It is almost like the Pats have told him their plan and that the agent doesn't want to PO the pats so he defers all comments to the pats.

or maybe maybe he is not worried about POing them but he wants other teams to think there is still interest.

just two thoughts.

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

I hope I'm wrong here, but anyone else think that if the Pats were going to make an offer they would have done it already?

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

No...there is no rush...

No. My guess is there is no one else sniffing around Seward, so they can bide their time. If they plan on making an offer, they know what it is and will set aside the appropriate cap space.

They can then wait for CAR to sign some more players and use up more of the cap, and then strategically time the offer when it makes it most difficult for the Panthers to match.

Or, they aren't interested.

What I was finding interesting was that the agent was differing comment to the Patriots. Like the pats are going to announce there intentions. But obviously the agent knows something we don't.

ya like i said they kicked the tires and decided to move on, visits like this normally results in a fast offer, id say hes not in their plans

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

They're probably just considering their options. Haggans is still out there, I was just reading that the Patriots are one of several teams interested in Takeo Spikes for whom winning is said to be important ("Spikes wants to get a ring, that's what someone told me who knows him well" per Adam Caplan). I suspect they may make an offer to Seward if no other options come through.

I think we're on the same page about Colvin based on some of your posts and threads - I think its a shame he's not healthy enough to re-sign or have re-structured and come back.

Every time I look at this team's offseason plan, penciling Colvin in at OLB would seem to make things a lot simpler. It would allow a lot of flexibility with where they put AD, what their needs are going into the draft, etc. But, it seems they have pretty much said good-bye to Colvin.

How is Haggans as a pass rusher compared to Colvin?

Takeo Spikes... He's known as one being not the sharpest knife in the drawer, so god knows how he'll understand the BB playbook.
