1 - Hire a decent GM with full control.
Well, that's a pipe dream so realistically, they have to get a QB either in the 1st round if one of the fancy names slide to them (and they like the prospect) or try a JimmyG sort of pick , 2nd or 3rd round trying to find value in a player with the skills to do well in this system with proper coaching.
I don't like the idea of going with a vet while the kid grows but for at least the next season that's probably the case, unless some surprise happens in camp like when Russell Wilson x That QB from Green Bay happened.
Rephrasing, I don't like the philosophy of going with vets for years trying to develop a player and wasting 3 years here, 2 there, there's probably teams trying that for 10 years. I'd like them to be agressive in this matter, try hard, be agressive and if it fails move on. You don't win without a passer QB in this league. Fixing some issues they probably won't be this bad next year and will be out of the top 15 for 2022 so I want them to draft a QB in the 1st round. Unless there is a massive run at QB's and you're left with no viable options.
JimmyG. I like the idea of him coming back, his skillset is a match with McDaniels offense and he is not leaving. Also he is a seasoned veteran now and still young. Needs to stay healthy though. The financials and the picks involved in a possible trade I will leave out of the discussion for now. It would certainly involve this years 1st. If it's only that pick....
About other vets, they might do well with Fitz or Mariota, I was thinking about Stafford but the Lions have been so bad he has to have some part in that. Good QBs produce results on the standings, they make the other guys better. You take a look at a league picture of the worst teams in the past 10 years, teams always drafting high, the Browns turned things around, the St Louis Rams moved to LA and turned things around, the Jags, Jets, are always there, and the Lions too, probably in the top 3 of the worst results overall in a 10 year window. He's also pretty banged up.
I was almost saying that sticking with Cam for another year may not be a terrible idea but GOD NO. NO WAY. I should self flagellate myself for that thinking.
3. Draft a QB high. If it means you had to reach a little bit then reach. I don't wanna see us picking at 11-14 with Trask or Wilson on the board and then decide to go DE or DT hoping they'll last til our 2nd round pick. If you miss, well oh well try again next year. But I don't wanna see this team taking that position lightly in a QB deep class. Be aggressive and get your guy asap
Exactly, stop dancing in the draft moving down and up and losing trade value in the between, just make the damn pick.
Pats have the ammunition to trade into the top 10 if they see a QB they want. Picking a DT "feels safe". But the fact is you keep inserting trash at the QB position and you will continue to end up in the 6-10 or 7-9 region once the year is done. This year has shown that the franchise QB is the difference maker. BB might be a genius coach but he still can't win with trash at QB.
I totally agree, unless you get a Von Miller type LB and the QB's are all gone, you don't move the needle with a DT and there are plenty of DT wiffs in that 15-20 territory as well.
