Normally you'd think that you would have to have Drake Maye play an almost perfect game to win down at TB coming off a bye and getting back 2 key OLmen. Well, the Pats won this game on a day where Drake had his WORST statistical game of the season, with a completion % of 51% AND an endzone pick. The reality was Maye, despite the things he did wrong, did a LOT of things right. It just that for that game he reminded us that he is really IS a 2nd year 23-year-old paying his dues playing a very unforgiving game.

So much to unpack in this game. I started writing this last night, got about 2/3rds of the way through it, then hit some keys and suddenly it was all gone. With mind blown and very frustrated I went to sleep figuring there wouldn't be an "idle thoughts" this week. Woke up this AM and decided to try again, but with a shorter version. Hope you all understand.

1. Drake Maye continues to impress me, despite the stats. Let's take the play he runs to the sideline and gets "earholed" by a Bucs defender (no flag). Instead of jumping up begging for a call, he just calmly got up, and walked back to the huddle completely focused on "the next play".

Maye presents that calm, confident demeanor throughout the game, game after game, and it is such an important quality that I get chills. That's the kind of presence that wins ball games under the highest of pressures and effects the whole unit in a positive manner.

2. I wrote in the GDT "2 picks, 2 explosive plays, Mission accomplished. Now Henderson and Williams are FAR from finished products. Williams doesn't even get regular snaps yet. I read somewhere that he played only 10 snaps, despite the TD. But we drafted both because we lacked guys who have the speed to create EXACTLY the kind of plays we saw yesterday. We had FOUR such plays, when we used to have none. Now I hope they both work out and eventually become consistently productive starters, but in that last draft we went in with a vision of what we wanted this team to look like in the future and STUCK to the plan. Today we saw an image of the future.

3. This might have been the best draft in Patriots history, at least in the one with the most immediate impact. Think about it. At #1 your starting LT. At #2 an explosive RB At 3A your explosive WR. At 3B your starting LG. At #4 your starting FS (more on him later) Then you draft a very effective FG operation with both the snapper and Kicker (after a shaky start) Farmer has contributed to the DL rotation. Bryant is the backup RT. In fact, only Minor and Swinson haven't contributed in a meaningful manner....so far. Pretty good haul by ANY measurement.

4. Now back to Woodson - Here is a 4th round kid who has started from day ONE and has played over 80% of the defensive snaps and has done nothing but get better every single game he plays. Yet when we talk so glowingly about our rookies, his name is often left out. He had 8 tackles 3 pass defended including a key one in the endzone. Why isn't he getting more love. Why isn't he given the acknowledgement that as a rookie his IS going to make mistakes. Why isn't HE be given the any benefit of the doubt. To my point of view, he has done a GREAT job, as a rookie, a one of the most difficult positions on the defensive side of the field.

5. Interesting that when we put Gonzales on Eckuba in man, he did a great job shutting him down. But when we used zone concepts on him, he managed to get over 100 yds. Are we ever going to "revis island" some #1 or 2 WR for most of a game? Personally, I'd like to see that.

6. I wonder if Terrell Williams is doing any football work or helping in the game planning while he is at home getting treatment. It is hard to believe that a relative novice on defense is in charge of developing the game plan and making all the in-game adjustments. I would LOVE to get a look inside the logistics of how they are developing their defensive game plans, which btw have been pretty damned good so far.

7. HUGE kudos to Doug Marrone and his staff for getting his ragtag group of vets and rookies ready to play against TB's complex 5 and 6 man blitz/fake blitz packages. It was a group that had 15 sacks over the last 3 games and were held to 1 phony sack of one yard this game. I certainly wasn't perfect, but for the most part they gave Drake enough time to get the ball downfield on a regular basis. A lot of work still needs to be done. Maye had a lot of pressures, but given the advantage of the homefield and extra week to prepare the OL did an adequate job. Also, kudos to the RB's and TE's who I imaging also helped in the protection schemes. A big ask from such young RB's. It was my biggest fear going into this game and happily didn't materialize.

8. Going forward, I doubt that either Boutte or Stevenson are going to play Thursday, despite the Jets win yesterday, I don't see us losing to them. I'm going to trust this staff to get them ready and squared away mentally. Teams have so many staffers these days, that I'm sure they delegated a few to have preliminary game plans for the Jets ready for today, with all their games broken down and personnel analyzed when Mike got to the stadium this morning.

9. That being said, there were PLENTY of lessons this week of proof of the "on any given Sunday" adage. So, while it is a game we SHOULD win easily, that's what the Bills thought Sunday. That's what we ALL thought. But even the worst teams have a LOT of good football players on them. Can't forget that, like the Bills evidently did. ST's TD's, turnovers, defensive TD's, etc, can all turn games around. Now the Pats are going to be tested on their maturity and mental toughness.

10. Despite the spectacular 4 plays we saw Henderson and Williams make, they are still far from becoming regular contributors. Henderson is a lot closer. He COULD become a spectacular impact RB IF he develops a lot better vision and cutback ability. Right now, he has become a legit threat to pop through a hole and go the distance, but if the hole doesn't exist right where the play was designed to go, he doesn't have the vision to make that cutback to where a hole has formed and make something out of nothing which impact RB's do on a regular basis. Right now, he just runs where they tell him to go as fast and as hard as he can. If there is a hole he becomes extremely dangerous. If there isn't, he'll hit it hard and do the best he can. Right now he's an asset, if he learns to have a plan B he'll become someone defenses will have to plan around. Excited to see how he develops over the next couple of years.

11. I hope Drake Maye DOESN'T win the MVP. It's too early for one, and I don't care that much about it to begin with. Brady was the GOAT, and how many times did he win it? 3 times in 20 years and surprisingly never in a year he won a superbowl. IMHO Taylor should get if he continues on his current pace, and if it is truly a QB award, Stafford deserves it more. Right now, no NFC team looks more complete than the Rams.

12. I finally have decided to stop getting pissed off at the refs. We watch these players make DOZENS of mistakes throughout the game and not go nuts, and then when a ref makes a judgement call at full speed and it's found to be wrong after 5 minutes of going over it in super slow motion and 4 different angles, or worse it is a foul, but a ticky tack one that is often let go, we rage. Officials are part of the game, and mistakes WILL happen. Sometimes they benefit you sometimes they don't, and with the exception of KC, they usually even out over time. We have enough to rage about these days. I can do without this one.

Well, I spent 2 hours working on this into the AM and suddenly lost it. Tried again and worked 2 more hours in the morning and lost it again and gave up in frustration. Decided to open another thread on FA and the morning edition popped up, so I finished it and here it is, for what it's worth. I hope it was worth the read, please comment or disagree.

The rookies are so exciting. Got a few big breakouts this week and i would love to see where they are come January.

Henderson- kinda saw the little flashes coming since the Cleveland game. Finally went off for real. I think he needs to touch the ball at least 10-15 times a game with his big play potential. In January you need a legit ground threat.

Williams - still working his way in but that was incredibly encouraging.

Ponder - I have been hearing alot about him but hadn’t noticed him much until yesterday. What a huge sack at that point in the game. Especially with edge depth being one of the main areas of concern coming into this week.

If we continue getting more outta these 3 in addition to what we’re already getting with Campbell, wilson, woodson, farmer, borregales, ashby this could wind up our best class EVER. Which is saying alot thinking back to that 95 class. Definitely one of our best

1) Nothing to disagree with here. Maye seems like the total package.

2) It's awesome to finally have some explosive players and explosive plays. Part of that is Maye having downfield throwing ability we honestly haven't had since Bledsoe. For instance, Boutte or Hollins are hardly explosive players by NFL standards yet both are producing both plays in large part because Maye simply excels throwing downfield.

3) Best all time seems like a big stretch from what we've seen so far. Specifically talking about the early returns as you qualified it maybe has a little more discussion. But for as much as guys are playing, only Will Campbell is an above average player on the season RIGHT here and now.

4) Is anyone down on Woodson? I don't see him get much hate. You're right that he's been fine for a rookie. The only "negative" sentiment I see is that if you just grade him as a player without the rookie qualifier, he hasn't been that good yet. Which is fine. He's improving like you said and seems like he's going to have a decent career for himself if he keeps at it.

5) Revis Island coverage means everyone else has to play man too. I don't think we have the guys for that at LB/S so it will be somewhat limited until we do. Improve the coverage at LB and S this offseason and they'll play more man next year IMO. I also disagree that Gonzo shut him down. He got beat a fair amount even in man from what I saw. No all 22 though so possible some of what I saw was actually zone.

6) Vrabel seems to only surround himself with "football guys" so I'm sure TW is itching to get into it. Hopefully he's prioritizing his health though because that's the most important thing any of us have in this world.

7) We've had a lot of pressure but Maye has some responsibility in that too. He's honestly just one of those QBs who leads to inflated sack totals in how he plays and he probably will be for the rest of his career as it's part of what makes him great. We'll always have to somewhat grade the OL on a curve for that with him.

8/9) Vrabel seems to have the guys enjoying not just the results but the process, which sets us up well to avoid trap games.

Second #9 you listed, haha) Agreed that they need to be more consistent (and it kind of explains why I think you exaggerated on #3).

10) Maye seems as good a candidate as any. I really think the team around him is still mostly average and he's the factor elevating us to 8-2. Stafford I think is more a case of the team is great and so is he. Taylor probably in the middle where IND is pretty good overall, but he gets credit for playing with a QB who needs to be carried.

11) Can't expect perfection out of refs - that's not fair. But you expect consistency and the mistakes to not be egregious.

EXCITING WIN FOR SURE!!!!!

The clock/play management at the end of the first half was EXTREMELY stressful, but it ended up with a perfect result (TD for a us an no time for them).

My only 'somewhat negative' is that again we struggled to score in the fourth quarter.....ultimately Henderson broke a long TD, which leaves us going home happy, but the offense wasn't exactly 'clicking' for a majority of the second half..which seems to be a continuing trend. Is it the other team making halftime adjustments? maybe

I know, they can't be perfect....and I"m having a lot of fun watching this team!

It is pretty amazing to think that the Pats can be really off their game and STILL beat a team like the Bucs or the Bills.

We know the OL hasn't exactly been protecting Maye well, but damn, he just seems to step up, brush off the near CONSTANT pressure and make big throws.

As mentioned in a game day thread, if I'm going to nitpick on Maye (who is MUCH better, MUCH faster than Brady was to be honest) he doesn't seem all that adept at the short dink and dunk passes.

Bledsoe had a bit of that in him too and while it's REALLY not a bad thing to see Maye's average YPC at @ 10 yards, it does raise the question of whether he's got that fine touch to play a dink and dunk California offense to use short low risk passes like we would the run. Maye always seems to be looking for the big pass and there's going to be times when the short safe nuanced pass is key to a win.

Beyond that I am REALLY sick of the "Patriots are weak because their strength of schedule"

At this point in the season with hindsight being 20/20, there's really no 2 loss team that doesn't have it's fair share of "easy" games on the schedule - just look at the Rams and Seahawks and even Indy. The Broncos look like they've got perhaps the most quality wins, but we've got our street cred with big quality wins on the ROAD no less.

But compare our schedule with any of the other leading teams and save for playing the Jets and Miami twice, we've got similar schedules to those other teams in terms of outright losses, wins and quality wins.

Was jonesing for idle thoughts glad to see it — great stuff as always!

Not sure what program you use but I set word to back up every 2 minutes now. google docs just saves automatically. You are basically a writer at this point what tools are you using please say you aren’t just writing for all this time in the patsfans interface.

An abridged version of Idle Thoughts is better than any other writing I've seen on the Pats this week, so I'll take it.

Agreed on a lot here, but will add my hat into the ring of "the LB coverage skills are why we don't play man coverage" chorus. Hopefully, we can address that.

I don't see much press on Woodson at all, and certainly not negative. For a player at his position, that's a good thing. It also puts a little less pressure on him from "the noise", so it's fine. That play he made this week is the kind of play where, if made with regularity, will get him noticed quickly.

3. This might have been the best draft in Patriots history, at least in the one with the most immediate impact.

This has to be among the best total offseasons ever, for any team. The Patriots are tied for the best record in the NFL, and only 15 of the players on their game day roster Sunday were with the team last year. 15!

I was curious about your take on Hollins, Ken. Was this a case of Tampa being unprepared, and now people are on notice so will be able to contain him? Or is this a case of the beast is unleashed and a taste of things to come? He has been under my radar but I don't get Pats games televised in my neck of the woods very often.

I was really impressed by his attitude, his physical play, his hands, and his speed. But I haven't been watching him a lot (if following video doesn't embed properly, it is of each of his receptions in the game).

Brady had plenty of these types of games over his illustrious career especially earlier. He would make mistakes but make the plays that matter most.

No different than Drake has. Woodson absolutely deserves some respect on his name. The guy can hit man! He would make Rodney proud.

As we've all posted on... the zone is to cover up for the LBs in coverage..

According to kurh himself he said Williams is around the facility and is involved in everything just not physically at the games. Williams is very aggressive.. we saw this week 1.. once he gets healthy and returns I'd expect to see gonzo taking away teams #1..

Hollins has always the deep ball in his arsenal.

I remember the New Orleans game, he threw an interception with little time left on the clock, the D held 3 and out and Tom got the ball back and scored a TD for the win. Amazing game.

I don't think that Hollins has the quickness you'd like to see in your outside receiver, but he has decent speed but at 6'4 and long arms, he almost always presents himself as a legit target for Maye, even if it's a tight window. He is a tough match up for teams who don't have elite S's or CB's.

Still, he had his best game against a team that DOES have very good S's and CB's. He's been a sneaky good addition. For most of the season we've usually extolled his blocking ability when we've wanted to say something nice about Hollins. Now we can add his receiving ability as well. Plus, he's a good guy to have on your team.

I kind of think of him as Maye's Kelce. A guy who makes himself available to his QB when he's under pressure. Of course he doesn't have the connection Mahomes has with Kelce after YEARS of being together, but I see the start of something.

Hollins is on pace to match his best statistical season in 2022 wich he last had with JMD. He makes clutch plays and is an invaluable asset for leadership.. Vrabel was raving about him yesterday..

He is also a force in the blocking game.

3 quick remarks on your post.

1. Thanks for the detailed remarks. I enjoyed your post.

2. When you "revis island" someone you don't necessarily have go all man across the board. There are several coverages that combine man and zone concepts. There are match up zones where players will use man techniques on the first receiver that comes into their zone. These are more complex coverages but ones we can use to protect those LBs

It gets more dangerous when you are rushing 6 and you have to play either a soft zone or zero man and hope you get there or cover well. I think we have a secondary that can do that and maybe we will see it more as the season goes on.

Great to hear that TWilliams is in the building and helping with the game plan while he is getting treated for his cancer. I will they would mention that publicly more.
