Reading through this thread you notice, and it happens a lot, is people saying the reason for lack of pressure is because we are 'containing' and 'playing the run'. It's all bull.

You can get pressure whilst playing contain. All it is about is integrity, just like gap integrity in the run game, you have to make sure you don't allow the pocket to open up so he can step out, or lose the edge and enable the QB to go around. Best way to do it for a DE s to use the speed rush, lean your right shoulder into your blocker, thus limiting the distance to get to the QB, and make sure that outside shoulder doesn't get caught inside.
As always, it really dpends on scheme.

If you loo kat some of the plays, you'll see Jerod Mayo open in space without a direct assignment (not all the time, but some of the time). His role was that of the spy. Thus, we had 1 less active defender on those plays.

Some plays where they are maintaining vigilance against the run, there might be a .5 to 1 second delay on some of the secondary LBs to diagnose the play. That also tends to create less initial pressure.

Guess it depends on what we think of as pressure. Is it getting the QB to move from his spot, getting the QB to move from his spot in 3 seconds, 2 seconds, 4 seconds. Collapsing the pocket,...

Everyone classifies it differently...which is why it can be a distorted stat and I tend to use the eye ball test when it comes to pressure.

If you force him to not step into his throws, move him off his spot by around the three second mark or you're around his feet, that's pressure. Any later than 4 seconds and you've given him too much time if you aren't in his face.

The impression it depends on scheme is misguided. You don't entirely substitute containment with pressure and vice versa. This isn't an aggressive defence regardless...we RARELY blitz (and that's a huge understatement)...so you rely n your front four getting it done.

Containment is all technique and staying true to your lane...just like in the run game...and controlling your man. You don't have to substitute pressure for containing at all. It's a popular but misguided perception. You can get around the edge and push he middle of the pocket whilst STILL containing and that's what the top end players in this league do. You just have to refrain from being over aggressive and dragged away from our assignment.

rushing a mobile QB does limit your rush. The outside rushers can't rush full speed because if they get too far up filed it creates a gap for the QB to run through. Inside rushers have the same problem. So like the "gap control" you spoke about earlier, the rushers rather than trying to get rid of the blocker have to control them, while still providing pressure. Taking a hard balls out outside rush, like the one that beat Solder can't happen in this situation

One stat that I heard that really plays in the Pats' favor, in their last five non-conference away games the Cards are 0-5. They don't travel well especially against teams they don't see a lot of.

Not to mentino that west traveling east and playing the 1pm game.

There is techniques in football employed and designed to stop you being led up field. The most effective move against a mobile QB is a speed rush IMO and the use of the rip technique.

You have to lean in and keep your outside shoulder and leg free from the blocker to enable you to reach outside should a QB or RB try and get around you and, at he same time, limiting the distance you need to travel to get to the QB. As said by all coaches, the quickest way to the QB is a straight line and leaning in limits that distance and prevents you being dragged up field.you don't worry about what's inside because your sole responsibility is outside contain.

You're basically describing what a DE does when playing two gap in a 3-4.

Bull rushing isn't always effective in contain...it's too easy to get dragged inside and you're outside shoulder and leg aren't free of the blocker, which is CRUCIAL in containment.
