idle thoughts - making the case for Jamie Collins

Bedard is not too thrilled with the collins pick.
I think he's taking to heart those claims of a bad motor and sloth. Claims that don't match the production. Personally I'm not upset with them, because if those rumors hadn't been out there he'd never would have fallen to us.

I like this player.

I had him bolded in my draft spreadsheet as one I hoped the Patriots would add.

That said, I liked Crable, Redd, and Mincey.

When the Patriots defense was good, that had athletic, versatile OLB's, and a bunch of them. The 2011-2012 teams have had a number of ILB's, with several of them playing OLB roles.

Collins is an athletic OLB who should be able to play in space. Hopefully a third-down OLB who can do a bit of Phifer, a bit of Vrabel. Big shoes to fill, but there hasn't been anyone in that versatile role for five years.

I'm in the let-Spikes-leave camp, but even with Spikes here long-term Belichick is at his best when he has more parts than starters. Look at the 2004 LB corps: McGinest, Vrabel, Colvin, Banta-Cain, Phifer, Bruschi, Johnson, Davis, Klecko, Izzo. Collins at least tips the team closer to that type of depth from a three-ILB & a bunch of special teamers.

I had Collins as the #6 overall front seven prospect. Behind Sheldon Richardson, Star Lotulelei, Ezekiel Ansah, Tank Carradine, and Dion Jordan in that order. I figured his likely landing spots were 15 to NO, 17 to PIT, and 24 to IND. Considering the value teams usually ascribe to upside, I was shocked he fell to 52.

The one question I have about Collins is where will he play? He played Safety, Linebacker, and Defensive End throughout his college career. He was drafted as a 'Linebacker' yet is listed as 'Defensive Line' on the Patriots website.

Given how he has shown to be pretty decent in coverage, I wonder if the Patriots will employ him in passing downs as a 'specialist' linebacker, perhaps replacing Spikes. He could be called upon to rush, or drop back into a zone.

He is very good at rushing the passer and not bad in coverage..much better than spikes. So i would say on passing downs Collins will come in for spikes. Goal line Spikes will be in ect

Wonder how much Collins will play this year

Two things stand out watching this reel. His awareness is very high he does not get fooled by fakes and draws and attacks the ball carrier RB or QB. The other thing is his speed chasing people down, is very good as well. Those two things suggest a smart fast observant guy who bill can mold which makes me excited. The only downside I saw was when he hit somebody they did not always fall down right away meaning he needs to add 10 to 15 pounds of muscle without loseing his speed. Not sure he has the frame for it as he looks pretty big already. Still all in all this guy reminds me of Vrabel smart versatile does all of his jobs well but none elite and that is worthwhile. If I had to guess he will have an eh rookie year showing flashes but not making many splash plays, year 2 with spikes gone and Hightower in the middle will be a starter, and year 3 a b plus coverage b plus versus the run and b plus pass rushing OLB.

I saw some of these things too, and while I'm also looking forward to seeing him play, we need to remember that highlight reels don't show his mistakes. If he got fooled by a fake or a draw, it wouldn't be in the reel. I'm sure he's been fooled and will be fooled again. Like everyone else.

I'd be more interested to see a complete game reel with all his plays, the good and the bad.
