I think it's weird that this thread happened, because Welker would have been (rightfully) crucified for his drop, catch that was actually a drop, and muffed punt had he played like that for the Patriots. Since he's elsewhere and the grass is always greener elsewhere, people want him back despite the terrible mistakes.

Excellent point. I loved Wes (I no longer do simply because he plays for another team I hate), but he could have stayed if he wished and the Pats could have kept him if they wished. Neither wished. He's now, to me, just like Moonhead (thanks, Joker) - the enemy. Agreed about the muffed punt and dropped pass. In the exact same scenario, he would have been critiqued as having had an OK game with pluses and minuses. But, that same performance for Denver yields kudos and superlatives that are miles over the top. I get it - we all correctly loved him. But, for people who rave about his performance last night and denigrate Amendola before he even gets to play a down is low-rent BS I might expect from the calibre of posters on GG or JI - not here. As Belichick said to Fred the Christmas Donkey Smerlas about Randy Moss back in 07, "Hey, give him a chance."

Ditto the comments on the drops and the muffed punt -- he wouldn't be crucified for it when you end up rolling over a spent defense like the Ratbirds were. Maybe it's not fair. He's world-class productive, and every receiver drops balls. But he seems to bring his B game on the biggest stages at the crucial moments. Muff a punt when we're rolling over a team that just didn't show up, all is forgiven. Drop the potential difference in the Super Bowl? Um... not so much.

It's interesting. 140+ posts on Wes Welker and I've taken some level of offence at Deus' claim that the Patriots aren't my immediate family.

Now, I don't allow my allegiance to define me but, supporting the Patriots and being a regular contributor to Patsfans sure does make it feel like a family community with shared values, emotions and experiences.

Disclaimer: I only read pages 11-15 before posting so pardon in advance if any of my points have already been stated.

1. If Amendola fumbles inside his own 5 and has 2 drops, he'd be crucified on this board nd dubbed a BB failure for all time.

2. If Amendola averages less than 7 ypc, he would be crucified for not being productive after the catch and for having a BELOW average YPC

3. I don't know why the myth that the Pats screwed Wes Welker persists. It just isn't so. The fact is, although the Pats last offer had less guaranteed money on the surface, the reality is that the Broncos can release Welker after this season with no repercussions. So instead of a 2 year deal with $10MM guaranteed and with reasonably make-able incentives would add another 4 or 5MM to the pot, he took a deal with the Broncos that is likely to have him looking for work next season and just 6MM in his pocket. RIght The Pats really screwed him.

4. The fact is that Welker and most of the fans here (including myself) vastly OVERESTIMATED Welker's market. We the time came Welker, the league spoke and Welker found himself realizing that the Pats were right all along. IMHO he was too proud to admit it and took what amounted to a lesser offer from a team that offered the 2nd best fit for his skill set.

5. I can't remember where I heard it (Matt Chatham perhaps?) but I heard this comment on last night's game that rang true to me. The observation was that, although Manning connected with Welker on 9 passes, the ball came out later and without the zip on it we'd usually see from Brady. This led the observer to worry that Welker might be more likely to get "blown up" more often and less likely to remain healthy. Brady's accuracy rarely put Welker in position to get crushed, and usually led him away from trouble. Manning didn't show that level of accuracy and zip.

Maybe its because their relationship is new and its possible that it could improve as the season goes on. But I thought it was an interesting observation that bears watching as the season goes on.

6. While other seem to rave about it, I thought that Welker's performance last night was hardly more than adequate. In fact only having 69 yds of production out of NINE catches was below average. Not even counting the drops, the only real laudable aspect of the performance was the 2 TD catches (2 and 4 yds)

7. I know its not Manning's fault, but I can't help but blame him for the fact that if Brady had done what he'd accomplished last night, he would have been accused of padding his stats and running up the score.

8. Over the last few years Welker has had Gronk and Hernandez (and to a lesser degree Lloyd and Branch) to help deflect the focus on him. Going into this season Amendola will have NONE of that protection. Any DC worth his salt will do everything in his power shut Amendola down, and force the Pats to go to their rookies to win the game. I very much doubt he will see anything less than a double team every time he lines up. On the other hand Welker now has even more protection in Thomas, Decker and that young TE.

The point being, when we compare the 2 performances and make our instant judgements, lets make sure we care comparing apples and apples.

Another player who made a debut of sorts Thursday was Wes Welker in a Broncos uniform. He had nine catches for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Wilfork was asked if he saw it.

Wilfork was asked why he wouldn’t be interested in watching his former teammate.

They apparently didn't have a chance. Welker didn't offer to sign with the Patriots for what the Broncos paid until after the Patriots had committed to Amendola.

If the Patriots were wrong, it's in committing to Amendola so quickly. I don't reporting that would allow us to judge accurately whether that was really a mistake.

Whether you believe Welker > Amendola, Welker = Amendola, or Welker < Amendola, I think any sane person would agree that in this offense, (Welker OR Amendola) >>>>>>> neither of them.

I hope, for the sake of Pats fans everywhere, that Amendola shakes the injury bug. Welker looked like vintage welker yesterday. The worst part is that it gives Manning a huge outlet on third downs. Between him and their two WRs, that is a scary looking offense.

The Ratbirds were forced to double WW and that opened everything up for the wideouts and the TE.

Eventually adjustments will be made and the Donkeys will come back to earth. The Ratbird defense was pathetic.

Tebow, yeah. By virtue of the trial, Hernandez will still be talked about. By virtue of whether or not Amendola can actually play a full season and whether or not Welker continues to build his chemistry with Manning, Welker will still be talked about. If Amendola craps out at any point through the season, Welker will REALLY be talked about.

I made these exact points earlier in the thread (although not as eloquently) and got killed for them . People accused me of calling WW a jag and denigrating him.

Bottom line... we saw the same things. There were probably 3 other ppl receiving catches on his own team that played better then he did (Thomas, Thomas, Decker) and since those three and WW took the majority of snaps, I'd hardly say he looked like an all-pro out there.

He was an outlet, dump-off guy..... which is hardly the feature role he enjoyed here. He chose it. There are a lot of reasons to regret WW not being a Patriot anymore, but Thursday's game is NOT one of them IMO.

You know who didn't impress me that much? Peyton Manning. I know, 7 touchdowns, 462 yards, etc. But to me, a lot of his throws lacked zip, and he threw a lot of real wobblers out there. Yes, they got to the receivers, and he was still on the money with his decision-making, and those things he'll always seem to have.

That said, I think this Bronco offense is going to be incredible all season long. They are loaded.
