I hope we trade some of these picks for proven players.

In 2007, we traded a 2nd and a 7th round pick to get Welker.
We also got Moss with a 4th the same year.

We now have 2 picks in each of the first 4 rounds of next years draft.

I am sure we will probably trade a 3rd for a 2nd in 2012, or a 4th for a
3rd in 2012.

I do hope we trade a couple picks for proven players prior to next years
draft.

I just do not want to see another 5'9' DB taken in the 2nd or 3rd round.
I still have nightmares of.....

Darius Butler - 2nd round 2009
Terrance Wheatley - 2nd round 2008
Johnathan Wilhite - 4th round 2008
Ellis Hobbs - 3rd round 2005
Guss Scott - 3rd round 2004
Dexter Reid - 4th round 2004

Prior to the draft last year the Jets got Santonio Homes for a 5th round
pick.

Hopefully we can trade a couple of these picks for proven players.

Anyone up for throwing a third or a fourth at Carolina for Smithy?

Cup -

I don't share your nightmares with regard to picks; some work out, some don't, but unless they are top 10 they are cheap. Having said that I expect some trades with these picks, depending on the lock-out. If not, we will see more seconds for firsts the following year type deals, or if the new deal includes limiting the cost of high 1sts a blockbuster deal to use the Faider pick to deal up for the player that Bill really wants ( my guess a DL) .

A 3rd or 4th for their main receiving threat? Good luck with that.

The 2007 draft class was exceedingly bad. Once you got outside the top 15, productive players were few and far between. Belichick called that draft perfectly by not wanting to touch it with a 100 ft pole.

If the expected juniors declare, the 2011 draft should go 2 rounds deep with top notch talent...making the 4 picks the Pats have pretty much gold. However, the expected dropoff in value after that point is extreme. It will be interesting to see how Belichick is planning to use the 4 picks in the 3rd/4th rounds. While you might be able to trade for vet help using those picks, it might be better to use them to ensure you get your targets in the first 2 rounds (Quinn, Crick, Baldwin, etc). If you pool those 4 picks, it equates to around a mid-2nd. While that isn't enough to significantly move up the Oakland pick (I'm hoping it will be high enough on its own), it is more than enough to move the Pats' own picks in the 1st and 2nd rounds up quite a bit.

i think moving up in the draft depends on if there is a rookie cap in place

I forgot, #1 WR's don't go for that kind of......oooops.

Rumor has it the Patriots are going to run a 1-10 scheme next year. Wilfork will be in the middle, while ten 5'9" DBs will be playing a soft zone.

Tell that to Pittsburgh.

Have to see what TaylorPrice can do (6'1", 4.4 speed)...

2011 NFL Draft Prospects

Mark Ingram, RB (5'10")

AJ Green, WR (6'4")

Julio Jones, WR (6'4")

Mike Floyd WR (6'3")

Matt Reynolds OL (6'6", 330lbs)

...

2011 draft class is loaded with top talent in top-20...

If you cherry pick good veteran acquisitions and ignore the ones that did not work out, guess what you are going to find?

If you cherry pick draft picks that have not as yet worked out and ignore ones that did work out, guess what you are going to find?

To leave the Pats out of this discussion, let's compare how successful teams like the Redskins and Raiders have been with their roster philosophy of going after veterans in comparison to teams like the Colts and Steelers manage their rosters.
