I guess Chris Hogan just really loves football

Overall, very happy with him.

However, I wish they would target him more. The dude is a big play machine.

Might be a "less is more" type situation.
But if "less is More" can you imagine how much more, "More" would be

For that kind of money, I think a lot of us expected a starter/go-to type, which hasn't quite happened. Hogan is no lower than 2nd on the WR depth chart and gets a lot of snaps, but under 40 catches in a year isn't quite what you expect from a starting WR. However, the yard totals are a bit closer to acceptable #2 numbers, and he does, of course, pass the all-important "eye test."

Also, "that kind of money" I referred to in the above paragraph is actually pretty low for a starting WR and closer to #3 WR money. Good price for a strong role player, which is just about what we got. He's at least justified his cost way more than Amendola (even though I love the guy and he does everything the team asks). I do think we might sour on him if he has another year or two putting up #3 WR production from the #2 spot, though.

The only issue with talking about #2/#3 etc. is that the Pats don't delineate that way, especially since TE1 is a bit more prominent here than most places.

Technically they wanted him but he quit.

Did they *really* want him?

Difference between Jets and Pats - the Pats wanted the best coach of his generation, the Jets used him as leverage and was viewed as a consolation prize....

Based on headlines, they were almost as concerned with their parking spots.

No worries about that for Sunday, Jets fans! LMAO

I am fine with 40 catches is a few of them are 50-75 yard TDs. Does # of receptions correlate to victory more than scoring?

That's fair. You could argue Hogan is only our 4th or 5th option behind Edelman, Bennett, White, maybe even Lewis (though he's been used more as a rusher).

I think both are pretty bad indicators. Think about guys like Matt Asiata who get tons of TDs, but that doesn't tell the full story about how the offense got to the goal line.

A couple of things to consider:

- The Bills finished 30th in deep passes this year with 34 deep passes completed (as defined by the NFL stats as passes 21+ yards, though this doesn't break down in the air vs. those with YAC included). They finished 21st last year with 51 catches.

- This made me think that Hogan might be the difference, as he caught 5 of those deep passes for the Bills for 176 yards and 1 TD last season compared to 8 deep passes for 347 yards and 3 TDs this season for the Patriots.

- Oddly, the Patriots made more deep throws last year than this. The Patriots are 7th so far with 53 passes over 20 yards this year, while they were 7th last year with 59 completions. I thought it might be the loss of Gronk, but he only had 6 20+ completions last season and 5 this season.

- Brady is 13 of 37 on deep passes this year with 4 TDs, 1 INT while Jimmy was 4 of 5 for 2 TDs and Brissett 1 for 10. Last year, Brady was 20 of 60 last year for 2 TDs, 2 INTs. So many of those big plays have gone for TDs whereas last year they didn't.

- If there's one area where we see a bit of cross-over, it's the 30+ attempts (the deep DEEP passes). Last year, Brady was 3 for 21 on those much deeper passes and got 2 INTs. This year, he's 5 for 17, 2 TDs and 1 INT while his backups were 0 for 4. Meanwhile, Hogan had 3 catches for 126 yards (42 YPC) last year compared to 4 for 238 (59.5 YPC) this year.

- Small sample sizes so hard to conclude much, but it might be that he's getting the ball in good positions to run with it this year vs. last. This shows up in the 11-20 split as well, last year he averaged 14.4 YPC on those types of passes, while this year he's averaging 20.8 on the same type of passes.

TLDR Hogan is a good addition, though he's not necessarily the missing deep threat we've never had. Our deep passing game is pretty similar actually, although we've had more TDs and fewer INTs, which may colour the perception that it's dramatically different.

A close reading of the article shows that this is before they actually hired Parcells. Belichick spent a week as interim HC of the NYJ while Tuna and the Jest negotiated his contract. So, Belichick was twice named head coach of the Jets and never coached a game as their head coach.

Hogan is not the type of receiver that gets multiple targets on a drive. But lose track of him and he can be standing in the end zone. A bit limited skill set perhaps, but a needed addition.

My close reading of the article noticed this helpful observtion:
Belichick is considered a disciplinarian whose unbending ways hurt him in Cleveland.
I'm so glad he mellowed so his unbending discipline is no longer a problem. I'm sure Sheard and Brown would agree. Perhaps Collins and Jones as well.

Add Larry Izzo, Duane Huard to the list of LOLphins stolen

Roman Phifer, Wiggie and Bryan Cox stolen from Jests.

Lawyer Milloy was also dumped and picked up by the Jills.

C-Mart is still a regrettable defection.

I don't think we can call it stolen if we let a player go and they get picked up by a member of the AFC Least.

I think C-Mart has more regrets than we do after following Tuna Crap to NJ. We went on to win multiple SBs and he'll be a Jet forever.

How could I forget Lawyer 'They Hate Their Coach' Milloy?

Another interesting factoid is that Belichick was a member of the Giants coaching staff under Ray Perkins before Parcells arrived. That means that both NJ teams passed on Belichick for Parcells. Woops.
