How to improve game-day threads?

It's useful in limited quantities.

Well I suppose it can be useful in rare circumstances, but the plugin that deletes quoted context is terrible. You get no idea what context another poster may be responding.

It's useful in limited quantities.

Ignore is useful in all quantities depending on the poster you're ignoring, IMO. Example: WhiteWesWelker deserved to be ignored for the pure idiocy of stating that he'd wish a career-ending injury on Kevin Faulk. Now, after reading that, why should I have been subjected to reading the rest of his garbage? Same goes for the so called "big thinker" douchebags around here who, apparently, like to argue for the pure hell of it... even after their points and logic have been pounded into horse dung. Why should I continue viewing their posts when they offer nothing to me?

Ignore is a terrific feature. I daresay I don't know what I'd do without it.

Unless you reach a tipping point of morons. Be it sitting around the kitchen table or a bar or whatever, when there are lots of people making asinine comments you're more likely to want to check out.

Asinine's in the eye of the beholder, of course...

I don't think it ever gets that bad though. When the Pats are playing terrible, you'll have an onslaught of criticisms, which is fair, and then here or there you'll have someone completely jumping off the cliff. And the posts that are completely asinine are the ones that make me LOL, so there's some entertainment value to them.

It's kinda like when a group of people are complaining about their daily lives, their spouses, kids, bills, etc. normal everyman complaint, and then you get the random guy who'll start sharing his problems about being addicted to crack and then everybody just stops talking and looks at the guy.

If you don't have it already, you should get Firefox and download the FFvB software. Excellent add-on. After that, you don't even see quoted posts of the person you're ignoring and it allows you to ignore mods that you don't get along with. I haven't really had to use it for the latter, but it's been great for the former.

I use something called self control. I don't read posts that I have reason to believe aren't very useful, and I don't respond to obvious trolls.

That's not to mention his "contributions" in other forums.

When I said limited quantities, I meant limited number of posters. I'm going to disagree with people all the time, but it's the prolific goobers I want to put on ignore. As bad as things can get in certain threads here, there aren't that many of those.

I'm open to suggestions.

More than any other event, the game day thread opens itself up to knee jerk reactions - play after play. At some point "Yessss!" or "Noooo!" becomes ' cut this guy right now' and much, much worse. Where do you draw the line, beyond the obvious such as abusive language?

The other thing is that I want to watch the game, as every other moderator obviously does as well. I don't really want to be critiquing 1600 comments Sunday afternoon; I want to watch the game! I suppose one of us could each be 'assigned' to a different game, but it seems pretty sad to me that things would reach that point.

Perhaps I should go back to the previous game threads and see who the worst offenders are, and go from there. Based on that perhaps certain people should be suspended from posting on Sundays?

I don't know what the answer is, but if anybody has any suggestions I'd be happy to hear them and talk about them.
Start an Azzclown asylum, you get banished to it and have to work you way out. Until then you can only post there.

The game day thread was horrific. Yes, we had a bad game. Yes, the defense once again looked like a strainer. Yes, the receivers could not get open. Yes, the rookies made some mistakes. Yes, the running game could really use someone consistent aside from Woodhead. However, that doesn't mean that it's okay or logical to insist that the season is over, that the defense is the worst in the entire league right now (Cardinals?), that the receivers should all but cut, that Gronkowski should be waived, and that Brady should be benched for Hoyer. There's a difference between filing logical complaints and going completely over the deep end for the hell of it. A great example is "OldNEPatsFan". He's a prime example of why the ignore list is such a great add-on.

One of the worst things for messageboards. Causes far too many responses based on out of context interpretation of a poster's words because you miss the very context that they are responding to. It's seemingly become very valuable amongst the loudest posters who do not like opposing viewpoints.

Agreed. It's useful for both sides, though. IMO, the raging homers are just as bad as the fear mongering chicken littles. There's plenty of both (though more of the latter) on my ignore list. Funny thing is, though, that probably 85% of my ignore list has gotten banned since I've put them on ignore. I might have to clean it out.

There was a "name the troll?" I didn't see that thread. It must have gotten deleted or moved. I wonder if I got named name by one the chicken littles for being too optimistic. I hate it when folks make their list of homers and leave me off.

Sounds like it was the work of an utterly brilliant genius, and I believe it was PatPsycho who claimed to have created it. Some of the comments were apparently too harsh and maybe could have hurt some people's feelings .

Hmm, maybe I should consider using the Ignore function...for people with inflated egos.

As Nikolai stated, it's not just skipping over posts here and there. The only really annoying people I put on ignore are the people who insist on posting with such frequency that ignoring their posts becomes a hassle.

Bear in mind I only have about 5 or 6 people on my ignore list. Thankfully the most prolific offender managed to disappear from this forum entirely

Patriots Planet? Where a former annoying PatsFans message board poster left to?

What do you expect, we played our worst game of the season. There's some posters who do go over the deep end, but you're not locked in to that specific thread. There are other threads that people can join if they don't like what they're seeing in the gameday thread.

To me, the reason why I don't have much of a problem is because we played horrible. Our team deserved to be criticized because of their performance. If we had played a decent game and yet people were still going over the deep end, then I see a validity in discussing this issue.

Yeah that part I understand, it's harder to wade through tons of comments from one fringe-troll or obnoxious poster. Of course adding the context-remover plugin to that I think is bad for messageboards.

Thus, if you criticize the New England Patriots football team in any manner, you are condemned to the depths of hell! Brilliant!
No if you post material such as, cut Brady, trade Brady, bench Brady, all Bray thinks about is screwing his wife, Brady can't play anymore because his hair is to long, the game has past BB, fire BB, Kraft is cheap, this team Sucks (even though they have a winning record) etc. You know real fact based logical observations.

This site is being taken over on game day by a bunch of hysterical 20 year olds.

I expect people to not act like they deserve to be confined to the psych ward at Bellevue.

Yes, I read the game day thread the other day. Yes, it was awful. It's the best policy that some individuals should not post on the game day thread whatsoever.
