How should the secondary be adressed??

You could argue Hernandez is a top three TE in the entire league. He would certainly be the best offensive player on the Jets. You could toss in a high pick too.

The following makes our CB position a strength
1. Resign Talib if he's willing to give hometown discount (6 mil / year)
2. Trade for or sign a free agent good CB (similar in skill to Talib)
3. Keep Denard
4. Dowling becomes a wildcard -- if he performs, great. if he doesn't, no big deal
5. Leave Arrington as a backup; trade him if dowling looks good

Safety:
1. Sign a good short safety
2. McCourty remains as FS

Front 7:
Use our first round pick to improve this

I remember Laron Landry having some big hits against us, but wasn't he abused in the passing game? We clearly can already be abused in the passing game without adding 'Suicide Mission' and the money he'll want.

And I would like Kenny Philips coming here, but he seems to get hurt pretty often. What was his IR issue this past season, his knee? He's the Miami S we should have waited a year on instead of getting Meriweather. I'd take him, but not at a ridiculous number.

Resign Talib. It's that easy. Let him and Dennard grow together. McCourty grows into and trains only in his Safety role. Sign one of the above guys, Gregory and Wilson rotate in...I think we'd have the best secondary we've seen in a long time.

I'd keep Arrington or Cole, and pray to God we never need them lined up on the outside. If we have injuries (like we always do) in the secondary that equal one of them drawing the #1 or #2 WR, well we're screwed.

You know who I blame? Earthwind Moreland and Randall Gay. Those guys were plugged in and the D barely missed a beat, which I imagine influenced the coaching staff into a "we don't need a star" mindset. That led to us not giving Asante what he deserved, and our secondary has hovered between decent and crap ever since.

If that's the case, the guy you should really blame is Rodney Harrison. The problem wasn't that Moreland and Gay barely missed a beat, it was that Harrison was so good that we could plug in jags and get away with it.

Yes, he was a liability in coverage. He's one of the many safeties that runs under 4.4 but doesn't know what to do with his speed.

Just curious, on your sig thing under your user name exactly what do you mean by more badasses?? Bad ass as in the way they play, as in their personality, or both??
*******s who crush players on the field. Guys who dish our punishment to make sure that you think twice about running over the middle of the field. We need more of them.

We need players who'll relish a few personal foul - unneccessary roughness flags.

Two secondary positions are set

S - McCourty
CB2 - Dennard

So.....

Draft a safety in round 1
Sign a CB1 (it needn't be Talib)

Hope for improvement from Wilson
Hope for health and improvement from Dowling
Offer Arrington reasonable money to be the slot CB/CB4
Let Gregory and Wilson battle for the S3 spot if the rookie safety is ready on day one
If the rookie safety isn't ready immediately, start Gregory until the Rookie's ready

Sign a bunch of low-end/minimum guys to fight and push for spots

Wilson is not being given enough credit for his real role of covering TEs.

Bedard mentioned he was very surprised they didn't stick Wilson on Boldin, who is TE sized.

Thoughts??
Trade the 2013 NFL Draft first round pick (#29 overall) to the Bengals for a second round draft pick (#37 overall), a fourth round draft pick, and a sixth round draft pick (originally the New England Patriots draft pick).

WalterFootball.com: 2013 NFL Draft Order

Second Round - Cornerback
Second Round - Wide Receiver
Third Round - Safety
Fourth Round - Offensive Tackle
Sixth Round - Cornerback or Safety or Defensive End or Offensive Tackle or Tight End
Seventh Round - Cornerback
Seventh Round - Defensive Tackle

So you're saying we need 10 more Brandon Spikes'?

Due to expiring contracts, the Patriots may very well just start from scratch and completely rebuild this secondary around the pieces they currently have in place.

The revamp will revolve around where they decide to play their best overall Defensive Back: Devin McCourty. No more flip-flopping. Is he a Cornerback? Is he a Safety? It will be his fourth year in the league next year and it will be crucial for his development for him to have an established position to hone his skills.

Perhaps his position will be determined by who the Patriots pick up in FA. If the team manages to get a Jairus Byrd or another starting caliber / ballhawk Safety, do they pair him with McCourty at Safety and focus on rebuilding the Cornerback depth chart?

Perhaps that decision also will be affected by the status of Alfonzo Dennard. Assuming he stays out of jail after his February trial, the Patriots have a stout and physical (though small) Cornerback who can hold his own in man coverage. If the Patriots view Dennard as their future starting Cornerback, then they should commit to playing predominately man coverage - an aspect McCourty struggles in as a Cornerback (he excels in a zone scheme). In a man scheme, McCourty's strengths would be highlighted at the Safety position.

With hypothetically 1 Cornerback and 1 Safety position locked in, the team will look to find other starters and rebuild depth. Talib is definitely a top option to pair alongside Dennard (a tall, physical Cornerback), though it would be understandable if the team wants to move in a different direction. At Safety, Gregory seems more like a 3rd Safety on a depth chart with Wilson, who himself hasn't shown much outside of being average at best against the Tight End.

In the slot, the team could look to move in a different direction. Arrington is at his best in the slot, but if forced into an outside position he is burned bad.

My Projection/Wish List:

CB1: Talib Resigned/Free Agent/Draft Pick (Tall, Physical, Excels in Man)
CB2: Dennard
FS: McCourty
SS: FA Pickup (Ideally)/Gregory/Wilson (If nothing else)
SCB: FA

So you're saying we need 10 more Brandon Spikes'?
Nope. Brandon Spikes is horrendous in coverage. As a thumper in the run game he's brilliant.

From what I can tell, people on here want Spikes to not be resigned despite his hitting ability because he's too slow. However, people want a safety like Bernard Pollard because he hits hard, even though he's too slow.

You could argue a lot of things, but if one of them was Hernandez is a top 3 TE in the entire league, you would get laughed at by anyone with knowledge.

If we had a safety like Bernard all of our offensive players would be on IR. You get what I'm implying.

An MLB isn't going to have as many opportunities laying out players as a safety, who is streaking across the field to make contact.

Most of the hits a safety would make on WRs are illegal anyway. At least with Spikes, he knows he can legally lay out anybody that's coming straight toward him.

Super effective on RBs! Especially if they're coming out of the flat...
