How much should the Pats offer the Ghost?

As an aside, didn't BB, go for it on like 4th and 2 instead of kicking a 51 yard fg in the SB against the giants? We didn't make it and that would have been the margin. Amongst other things.

4th and 12 or 13, actually. OTOH, before you take that as a sign of "lack of faith," remember that since the Pats cut Gramatica in 2006, they haven't even signed a kicker for TC just to give Gostkowski a rest.

But then he went and spoiled it all by doing something stupid like signing for the colts.

yeah, that was disappointing but the NFL is a business above all. and, he did pick up a fourth ring.

No reason to pay a guy huge money unless he was really, really special. Not sure Ghost is.

It was fourth and 13, but it was "only" a 48 yard kick plus in a dome. One of the things that I hope BB will address in his Memoir. Adam made a 48 yarder in another dome to win XXXVI and the 45 yarder in a blizzard in the Snow Bowl. I never understood the decision.

Is he worth more than Garrett Hartley? He'll be a free agent I believe as well. He's twenty-three and poised to be a stud on New Orleans with their propensity to score a lot points.

"only a tender"????

The patriots would be tendering Gostkowski "only" $3.043M for services in 2010. If someone wants to pay him more AND give su a 1st and a 3rd round draft choice, then we still mwould ahve a chance to match. I don't see that happening, not the offer, and not the match.

He's an RFA this year, assuming no new CBA, but that means that a desperate Denver, Dallas, or even Indianapolis could swoop in and try and sign him away if the Pats only give him a tender.

So fans here want a pass rusher, an MLB, an OLB, a 3rd WR and oh ... Vince wilfork also ... I say we'll be drafting another kicker with a pick we gain in 2012 from a trade made in 2011. ;)

Ghost needs to be resigned!!!! BB said it best a few years ago "Gostkowski is a football player who happens to kick"!!! Do you all forget who recovered the fumble in the first bills game this season? He always runs downfield and trys to make a play after he booms the kickoff! Ghost is only going to get better with time and he is very underated and we can get him for pretty cheap!!!

Just some of his stats ... what site has the really good stats like hang time?

18th in field goal accuracy 82.8%

2nd in field goals 30-39 yds > 12/13

18th in field goals 40-49 yds > 4/7

16th in touchback % at 13.4%

17th in return yds per kick ... 22.1 average

Welcome to Small Sample Size Theatre. BTW, the league-wide conversion rate is only about 81% this year (down from >84% last year), so he's still above-average. That said, his career FG %age is 84.8%, which is good for 7th all-time.

"Only a tender" in the sense of having him play on it, rather than signing him long-term.

Nothing beyond his RFA tender, whichever level they decide to offer.

Let's face it, NE is taking a very cautious approach to the CBA situation going forward, they are likely to franchise Wilfork to avoid making a major contract committment. Gostkowski's next contract for the fastest man to reach the 500 point plateau is likely to be pretty good by Kicker standards. NE seems most likely to make some team give up a draft pick if they want to sign him to an RFA contract.

I think this is exactly correct.

Ghost's next contract should be upwards of $3M/year. But there is no reason to rush into a long term deal right now if he is an RFA.

Wouldn't it be similar to the contract they were willing to give to Kaczur? [Pace, folks, about whether or not Kaczur deserved it.]

I think he hurt himself on that kick that went out of bounds.

His other kickoff after that was pretty good, lots of hang-time and I still remember Bubba Ventrone flattening Hixon after a short return. But, Gostkowski was not running down the field after the Kick.

My opinion is he was hurt. Otherwise, he kicks that.

As for the contract.

I'd give him $13m for 4 years or $17m for 5 years if he wants long term, if not I tender him with a first round pick tender.

Ghost is good, but Bill doesn't like to kick long FGs so why pay top money for the position? Hell, Bill even passes up mid-range FGs to go for the first down. I'd rather them invest money in an elite center that can push the middle so we can get those first downs on 3rd and short.

Football Outsiders just posted a list of the top 10 contracts for specialists (K/P).

Based on this, what would you offer Gostkowski (after tendering him, of course :))?

Edit: Gostkowski is younger now than all of these players, except Gould, were at the time they signed.

Man, AV is only making 2.5M per year? Sheesh his contract looks like a bargain now compared to the other names on that list.

Anyways Gostkowski is still younger and has a stronger leg. But he still has a lot to prove imo. He probably won't get offered more than 2m per year.
