The Pats certainly are in a position to bolster their depth and improve their future. My question is: How deep is this draft...or in other words, how many players are considered first round talent? One year, I remember reading that GMs felt the first round was 17 players deep, another was in the low 20's....

Good question here's my list:

Jason Smith
Eugene Monroe
Aaron Curry
Brian Orakpo
BJ Raji
Everette Brown
Stafford
Sanchez
Andre Smith
Moreno
Crabtree
Malcolm Jenkins
Maclin
Vontae Davis
Rey Maualuga
Chris Wells

That's 16 players and there's a slight drop off in talent after them IMO.

A while back I read an annonymous scout/personnel guy saying his team had 37 first round grades this year. That was back around combine time.

I think the dropoff, unfortunately, comes in the low 20s. Then there's a second tier of talent in which the Pats have at least three picks, so they still have a lot of opportunity.

I just see a big difference between 1-20 and the following 25 picks.

I read the same thing, it does seem like a deep draft.

Mayock was the one who offered that 37 players had a first round grade this year. Two years ago only 20 had a first round grade.

what are your thoughts on the other 2 USC LBS? I think Ayers has shot up the chart as well as Kruger from Utah. Greene and Brown the rb's are also IMO first round talent however they probably won't get drafted until late 2nd early third.

Kruger is a 22 yr old soph. already back from his LDS mission. That guy could be a real steal for someone, he seems overlooked.

I like Matthews as a possibility at #34. I'm not sold on Cushing for the Pats, like most of the pundits seem to be. I agree that Ayers looks to be someone who may slip into the mid 1st, maybe as high as #11 to Buffalo who is notorious for reaching. I hadn't heard the buzz on Kruger. The RB projections will all be determined by where Moreno and Wells go.

Another guy I like is Herman Johnson from LSU. he may not be a first round talent but the dude is huge and Neal is going into a contract yr.

As far as the Patriots are concerned, I think there's probably 7-12.
