Dont'a Hightower dominates on 'D' | Boston Herald

Consider the potential for information overload. During the Raiders’ first seven passing plays of Sunday’s game against the Patriots, linebacker Dont’a Hightower had six different types of assignments.

He dropped into coverage as a 3-4 outside linebacker, dropped again as a nickel linebacker, rushed the passer from a defensive tackle position in the nickel, blitzed as a 3-4 inside linebacker, covered a running back as a 3-4 inside linebacker and dropped into coverage as a 4-3 outside linebacker.

And on and on it went throughout the day. Hightower has quickly emerged as the Patriots’ most versatile defensive player in their first three games. Against the Raiders, he had a dozen different responsibilities when combining his position and assignment with a particular defensive front.

I think this is what we all hoped he would grow into when he was drafted, and pretty much everyone who's done game breakdowns here has made a point of highlighting his efforts so far. Going into this season, I considered Hightower to be a relative disappointment, to date, based on his draft position. But over the past three games he's more than exceeded expectations, IMO. He's quickly becoming a game-changer on D, to the point that IMO he should rank right up there with Jones and Mayo as a disruptive force in the front seven that needs to be accounted for on every play.

At some point, BradyFTW!, in the middle of last season he turned it on; specifically, in pass coverage. He's big but has surprising speed. It takes a lot of will to get that big body moving to cover receivers. Something clicked last season. He wasn't dogging it anymore on passing plays. He's always been solid on run plays, helping to make the release of Spikes a no-brainer.

He has definitely stood out in every game so far. Nice to see. I remember after he and Ch Jones were drafted, I was one of many posters here who thought Hightower would have an immediate impact, while Jones would take a couple of years. Seems to have been the other way around (and I know the injuries last year forced him into a role for which he's not best suited).

Impressive. I can't think of anyone else who can do all those things. What's really impressive is that so far this season, Hightower is doing them all well.

I remember how the post game guys last yr , felger and ty law couldnt wait to kill him and kill bb for drafting him. Glad he is coming around.

It really shows the majority of boston sports media's prerogative. Hightower was thrust into playing Mayo's role which he just wasn't ready to do yet.

Hell, if you look at Mayo's second season, MAYO wasn't even ready for Mayo's role yet. It seems like one of the hardest positions in the NFL to be the QB of the defense.

It wasn't that many years ago when it was understood that it takes players a few years to learn the game and fully reach their potential.

I guess the Hightower bust crowd has left the house and is onto another topic with complete hysteria.

Probably hanging out at the Oline threads,

Vrabel probably could, although I only recall him as a DT of any kind in his gimmick role as nickel DT in the 20-3 Indy game. (The same one where Law and Rodney switched jobs, and where Law caught as many passes intended for Marvin Harrison as Marvin Harrison did, with Marvin also having a TO fumble on one of the few receptions he did make. Best defensive game plan I recall ever seeing.)

But you know the Dobson and Collins threads are coming. With Deus leading the charge on Collins.

He looks like he's playing with a lot more confidence this year. I love that they're playing him more on the edge and taking advantage of his abilities as a pass rusher. I've wanted to see more of that for a couple of years now. He's played very well in all aspects.

That plus the whole reacting vs thinking thing. He's processed enough of the pro game now that he can just react and get it right. I'd imagine it's like learning a language — with enough skip that middle step as processing it as English; you just get it. (Doesn't happen for everyone to be sure.)

How many games has Collins even played in?

3? 4?

And nobody played well in the Miami heat.

My favorite play from the last game, as far as Hightower's highlights, is when he diagnosed a closed side IZ (? sorry, going off memory here) and motioned Chandler to switch from 9 tech to a 5 and shoot the gap that was unaccounted for.

This represents not only an ability to diagnose a play in real-time, but to figure out the remedy in as little time, and put others in a position to make the big play.

That is a selfless team-first act.

Opponent=.......Miami, Vikings, Raiders
QB=..................Tannehill, Cassell , Carr
TE=..................Clay, Rudolph, Rivera

As BB would say, lets hold off on the HOF ceremony........but trending +++
Has there ever been a Pats #1 with less scrutiny attached to him. Jones has cast a big shadow and DH looks to have benefited during his time in the shade
