Belichick brought these guys in because he expects them to contribute to playoff wins and a Super Bowl. Their acquisition is not about winning preseason games or even the extra early season game. While I understand that one of these could be cut, I think Hanson was the expection. Belichick will have patience with his choices unless they show no hope in practices. Gaffney took more than half a season before he was productive.
These players do NOT need to be productive for GAME ONE to be solid acquisitions.
WALTER
TAYLOR
GALLOWAY
SMITH (I expect Watson or Thomas to be traded)
BURGESS
LENON
Belichick brought them in, based on what he saw at the time as needs on the team and projections about what these vets could do. In some cases, things have changed.
Taylor has earned a spot.
I think that's a I expect Walter, Galloway, and Lewis to be around. Those are comlicated positions in the Pats scheme with a steep learning curve. I expect better things next week out of Galloway, and I'm willing to wait if not. Lewis is doing well on STs and had a couple nice plays on offense, so he's not going anywhere. Hopefully, Walter will get some snaps now that he's had time to study the playbook, and even if he doesn't look sharp, will be given more than the pre-season to get up to speed, I expect.
Burgess had an off night, it seems. He's not going anywhere, though. Another late addition who will be given time to allow his skills to shine.
Smith looks lost - not blocking well and not making plays as a receiver. If Watson comes back at full speed, I think Thomas's development as a blocker will spell the end for Smith. Baker is showing enough as a receiver that they can afford to let Smith go. Hopefully, Thomas doesn't get hurt again.
Lenon won't make the team from the tub. If he doesn't get on the field, they'd be cutting one of the ST studs to give him a roster spot. He's supposed to be pretty good on STs, but he hasn't shown anything as a LB here or in Detroit to give himself a spot. If I had to guess, I'd guess he's not here in September. Hopefully, he'll get on the field and prove me wrong.
