Per Rotoworld. I apologize if this has been already posted.

Another stash away until next season. Hope he can pick up the offense.

I'm not sure if re-signed would be the best way to put it, as Hairston was likely waived/injured last Friday, has cleared waivers, and now has reverted to the IR.

Hey, at least he's still on the team. I'm rooting for him and now he's got some time to see if he can make it work in '08.

I know it's been mentioned before, but can someone please explain why they didn't just put him on IR from the get-go? Did they re-work his contract?

Good. I don't know why the paperwork was done the way it was done, but I'm glad that he still belongs to the NEP. Let's hope that he hits the playbook, attacks rehab with a passion, and is the best darn IR body in the NFL.

Meanwhile, I'll be keeping my eye on GB's DeShawn Wynn...

Why does he go to IR if he clears waivers? Wouldn't he just become a free agent.

Because he was injured during the employ of the Patriots.
The only way he'd become a free agent is if he came to an injury settlement.

Usually injury settlements happen if a player is on IR and wishes to become available to other teams. Technically, a player can not be cut when injured. It may have to do with money; if injured, he'd need to be paid...so?? if no team wishes his services IRed. I agree it's a bit weird in that they could have IRed him immediately...but???

Before the coach offered his insights into Walsh, he delved into more immediate matters, beginning with those involving Mel Mitchell and Justise Hairston.

He said Hairston’s release, and the re-signing to put him on IR, was simply a matter of going through a league mechanism that was too complicated to go through briefly — “Honestly, there are some procedures where we have to call them to make sure we’re doing it right,” the coach explained.

Maybe it's as simple as giving him a chance with another team. I suppose we may never know.

I think you are spot on. Basically he was hurt, looking at 2-4 weeks recovery time and not season ending. But because of the recover time, he had no shot at making the team in that situation.

So BeliPioli go to him and say, "We like you and think you can help us down the road so instead of cutting you, we want to put you on IR so we keep your rights and pay you for it. How does that sound?" He and his agent think about it and say, "why don't you cut me and let's see if I get lucky with another team". Pats say fine, no other team bites and he takes the $$ and Hairston redshirts the 2007 season. Sounds like that is what happened.

From what BB says it sounds like there is a CBA/NFL rule in place that forces a team to put a player on waivers so other teams have a shot a him. I know players do need to clear waivers before going on the practice squad. Maybe it's a rule along those same lines.

I tend to agree RW...something like that..won't have a chance to make it now and not really injured to warrant an IR..so?? somehow allowed to be available to other teams and if not picked up, back to the Pats and IR. More redhsirted. Not at all bad.
