    SOME THOUGHTS

We know that his body is failing him, and that he very unlikely to be able to play a full season.

If Gronk is part of the 53 man squad, Belichick would expect him to play hard in camp and throughout the season. If Gronk plays every game, his availability and health for the playoffs is problematic.

I suspect that Gronk just wants to play in the playoffs, and perhaps the playoff run.

    Gronk's decision isn't about money.
    ==================
    SUGGESTION
Gronk should consider ending this torture and file his retirement papers. He should consider keeping himself in top shape, with the idea of coming out of retirement for the playoffs, or not.

I dont think Belichick does half measures. Trying to think of an example where he agreed to someone playing half a season. Cue about 5 examples from other posters.

Gronkowski will play a full season (at least that's what he will intend) for the Patriots in 2019.

I agree. Belichick won't accept Gronkowski not giving 100% from camp until he is out injured.

However, I don't think that Belichick would fail to consider re-signing a player in December who might help in the playoff run,,

Maybe not December, but he would be a great game 9 addition. BB did similar with Seau.

Will Gronk take half a season pay though?

    1. We don't know that, he's a young man and was relatively healthy in the playoffs.

    2. Belichick has let him skip some preseason games before and has rested him during the season too.

You suspect he only wants to play in playoffs? Based on what?

    We do not know that.
He plays a violent position violently and he just played 246/252 playoff snaps and was a force after playing 75% of the snaps in the regular season despite missing 3 games (meaning he played about 92% of the snaps in those games).

He has played every playoff game in 4 of the last 5 seasons.
    What torture?

I don’t see Belichick agreeing to a partial season, I could however see him agreeing to limit Gronk’s practice time, as he did with Bavaro.

This is a stupid idea some writer cooked up and people are latching on to it. It’s pats fans.com version of “let’s become socialists”

He's rested him. And he's not had him play preseason multiple times.

Will Gronk get off the bench this week?

This is a problem I have with BB. He can be too stubborn and stuck in his ways sometimes.

Any coach or fan would be more than happy to say good bye to Gronk until December and then get him up to speed for the playoff run.

If BB isn't willing to do that out of some silly principle then that is detrimental to the team. Why insist on Gronk being there all 19 games if you know he can't make it to the really important ones at the end?

McGinest was floating this idea on TV a few days ago....basically wrap Gronk in bubble wrap and put him in a box until the playoffs.

I like it...but BB is right...football players play football...you gotta practice before you play....

And I want Gronk 100% committed mentally. We can't have him gingerly playing at half speed out there...

And IMO, he isn't "done" nor has he "lost a step". I am of the camp that he was seriously injured last year, but fought through it.

Bottom line, Belichick does whatever he wants and players accept it. He is generaly fair, but has always let vets off from practice or helped them stay fresh in other ways.

90% of the other coaches would be begging Gronk to play all season out of desperation. We’re blessed in that it’s easy to take the regular season for granted. For other teams, an extra loss or two means missing the playoffs and everybody getting fired.

Not sure the league would look kindly on refusing to play a non injured player.
