Has there ever been a defamation case with a judgment 1/10 as large as you're suggesting?

Let's put it this way; has there ever been so extensively public, extensive and prominent a defamation?

People have won several million in the past, but THOSE never led off the national newscasts for weeks and pushed the death of the Saudi King to the #2 story.

Vic Feazell got $58 million in a libel case, but Brady likely wouldn't win anything near that much, unless he could find a way to prove huge actual damages to the judge. It's not really about the money, though. It's about winning a defamation case, which is something that's notoriously difficult for public figures to do. If Brady were to somehow win a defamation case against the NFL, the entire NFL structure would get rocked, because the NFLPA would use that as one hell of a rallying cry.

It depends on the magnitude of the award. If he wins $250,000, then it can be spun as the accusation was basically true, but they exaggerated a little bit.
